There's a word for that
Skipping Cosmo Canyon means no Death Sentence (amongst other things), which will reduce Tifa's damage later on by a factor of 4. It can be gotten from Boundfats too, but only after Disc 1 is completed.
Don't think!  feeeeeal
I would think that the compensation for that would take less than 10 minutes.
I don't think that. Without death sentence you will not be able to defeat some bosses.

Surely there's another way to defeat the bosses, how many would you have to beat without death sentence anyway?

I was wondering why isn't the pause trick used to reset the random battle encounter memory address so you can avoid random battles?

Well, these are the bosses on disc 1 where death sentence is used:
Red Dragon, Demon's Gate, Jenova-life. Schizo is the first on disc 2.

I'm not sure how soon you can get death sentence on disc 2 though.

What is the pause trick?

You just press start to go to the menu then leave the menu and it resets the random battle encounter counter.

That would be triangle, I assume, not start. If that trick worked, I think it would've been used for speedruns a long time ago.

Edit: Nope, no go. I just did some testing on that in the first reactor mission, both with going into the menu just before an encounter (I've done it often enough to know exactly where they happen), and going into the menu every several steps. It made no difference either way on where the encounters happened. If you mean that this pause trick is just for world map encounters, it's already known that it doesn't work there... the random encounters there aren't reset by going into the menu unless you save your game and reload it.

^You should edit your post.

The menu trick does work, as seen in the TAS:

two battles removed

difficult to do in a speedrun. 0 frames of error.

Right. That's why it isn't used. It would be nearly impossible to do even once, let alone the many, many times it would need to be used in a non-TAS speedrun.
In the TAS, on average, it is used once every 4 minutes  Tongue
It does not reset the danger value though, so it isn't that good
Once every 4 minutes in a 9 hour speedrun is about 135 times.

Many TAS strategies (including this one) just aren't suitable for non-TAS runs because the extremely precise timing that's easy enough to pull off in a TAS becomes virtually impossible when you're using nothing but your hands and a gamepad.
will garland finish this?
Obscure games ftw

He said on his Youtube channel that he would finish the [FF7] speedrun even if it took 50 years.
This pause glitch slows the in-game timer and some other things:

Ingenious, talk about a break-through!  Stuff like this what RTSers TASers live for.
I will knock you all down!
Good day, everyone! Remember me? I'm the guy who was supposed to finish his speed run today, but I was not able to do that for several reasons. But if I remember correctly, I would get 125 bucks if I completed it before july or something, so I'll do my best to finish it before that.

I'll make a more detailed statement on Youtube soon.
Weegee Time
...nope, sorry, you're really not ringing any bells. Tongue

Alright, seriously, I'm looking forward to more progress on this whenever you're able to post it.  Good luck!

Does anyone have the memory address for StepID for encounters? Or the Lookup Table? The table is available for FF8, but I can't find it for ff7.
Edit history:
BrutalAl: 2011-07-07 01:14:03 pm
StepID 09C540
StepID fractions 09C6D8
Offset 09AD2C
DangerValue 07173C

The common LookUp table for field randomness starts at 0E0638 (starts with B1, CA, EE 6C, ...)

EDIT: US NTSC version.
Well, July is upon us, and unfortunately, no FF7 speed run completed :[
thats because speedrunners are tremendous boasting faggots
Balls jerky
well thats kinda harsh
berserker status
cuz we gots tremendous big coqs
Waiting hurts my soul...
I always underestimate how long something will take compared to how much time I can actually devote to it. I look forward to a console run of this though, and hopefully it's done soon.
I hope it is too.  I've actually contemplated doing this run myself, but as long as it took me to finish my Final Fantasy II run, I can't imagine how long it would take me to finish a game 3 times longer.
