Luck manipulating the elevator is faster.
Speedrun Update!
Now sorry if I updated every little thing about this speedrun but oh well. Right I took the elevator route and I tried it over and over I would say about 10 times and on my 11th try I would say it was the quickest attempts out of them I think and I went and saved on Floor 64 and the time went from being 1:48:36 to 2:02:56 now I don't know if that is good or not but I am doing decent for my first time trying a speedrun on Final Fantasy VII and an RPG game as well. So I will be trying to get where you go get Red XII I would say in a couple of days because I have been playing this game just so many times at these attempts at these parts of the game to get faster times a lot for the past days but it may not seem much though but still it's my first time so give me a break lol. Plus it is New Years Eve so I want to rest for a bit while it is New Years Eve and New Years Day so Happy New Years everyone!

Ideally you want to get out of Midgar by 2hr01m at least.
Garland and some others have managed to get out in 1hr51-1hr159 though so if you intend on getting out later than that you will have to find new time savers elsewhere or have very lucky battles later on.

This is my first try on doing a Final Fantasy VII speedrun so I kinda figured I wouldn't do as well as Garland. But when I finish this I will say what my time is then I will continue working on it then I will eventually work up to recording it and will get the best times out of a couple of attempts that I will do and try to submit my times. I heard Garland had a time did he submit his and if so what was the time?
He did not. Garland did a very detailed speedrunning faq on it. He then went on doing the run, uploading segments on youtube as they were ready. because he is a kind of perfectionist everything took way too long so a guy named Andrew Farrington utilized his faq to release an interimrun with a decent time that got accepted here on SDA. Meanwhile the last update on Garlands run is from April 2009 (Before, there were 2 days to 2 months between segments). Garland is still active on youtube, though. He is currently stuck at the rightarms thingy just before Corel.

EDIT: Here is garlands channel: http://www.youtube.com/user/GarlandTheGreat
Hey I thought about this and I decided to not do this speedrun anymore because I don't usually don't have to time to just sit down and work on this for long periods of time, got school to finish up, and plus I know that my time wont be great but it was fun to do for that little while. I will probably work on this whenever I do get the chance too and not sure if I will post any updates about it or anything.

Hey SDA, I'm just a new lurker around here.

I just thought I'd mention that I'm currently working on a speedrun of FF7, mostly following GarlandG's guide. It's my 3rd time starting one, and it's going pretty well so far, I think.

I've gotten further than I did, and with a better time, than when I gave up on my previous efforts. I'm currently at about 4:04, saved on the world map on the way to Gold Saucer following the Palmer battle. I'm recording it, too. I don't know if I'll try submitting it to SDA or not, as it's just PC capture card quality, not done with a DVD recorder... I'm not entirely clear on the submission requirements. I do plan on uploading it all to Youtube once it's finished though.

It'll be a while before it's done, in any case.

Edit: Forgot to mention which system I'm on. I'm doing it on my PSone.

"PC capture card quality" can be anything from a tiny window with 5fps up to full HD.
If you are capturing with proper settings a PC capture is not worse than a recording with a DVD recorder.

So tell us what resolution and framerate you're capturing at.

Also, I appreciate it that someone still works on an FF7 run Smiley
The settings on my recording program are set to mpeg2, 720x480 resolution, 2400Kbits/second. I'm pretty sure it's recording at 30fps.

Yeah, just did a quick check going frame by frame in a brief section, looks like there are indeed 30fps.

I would've set the quality higher, but my hard drive space is a bit limited.
These quality settings are quite good. I don't think there will be any problems concerning this.
Wow your time seems to be really good. I'd love to watch your segments as soon as possible on youtube Smiley
I might actually start putting some of them up on Youtube before too long, perhaps in the next couple of days, as I've got lots of free time right now... January being slow at work and all.

I agree, the quality should be fine. As far as my experience goes professionally produced DVDs seldomly have average bitrates above 5MBit for video.

So if you finish this run...
FOR THE LOVE HIS NOODLENESS SUBMIT IT! Cheesy

Ok, getting the Youtube uploading started. I'm going to try to get at least the Midgar stuff uploaded today.

My YT page is here for anyone interested: http://www.youtube.com/user/ThomasMcCormack

Edit: Ok, got Midgar uploaded. I had a time of about 2:03 here. Here's the playlist so far.

Edit again: I've still been working on my run, and I've now finished disc 1, with a time of 4:58:33 (that's the first visible time when I load my save on disc 2 and immediately open the menu). I've still got quite a ways to go, though. It's all up on my Youtube page as well, I finished uploading what I have so far today.
I will knock you all down!
I suppose this video could have some relevance in this topic:

@ GarlandG

Nice to see you are still working at the run. I was afraid it had been put too far aside and wouldn't get finished.
Are you going to work on it some more in the next weeks?
And a big LOL to your luck with that segment  Cheesy
There's a word for that
Epic.
Nice to see you're working on it again, and very nice with that luck there!

I'm just getting back to working on mine again, after being away from it for a few weeks. I'm at the snowboarding part, which I've never been very good at, so it might take a while.

You need some more encouragement Garland? There might be a bounty for you if finish this by 2011...
I'd so chip in on that... but only if Cait Sith got named after me.

I'll throw some money down as well.

I've posted in the bountry thread if you guys want to do your own bounties too.

I can't believe I'm actually gonna make 125 bucks on this. It's not a lot of money, but it sure helps on the motivation. And now that the most luck reliant segments are put behind, I should be able to finish the run without taking 10 month breaks again.

You can do eeeet, Garland!
I will knock you all down!
Yes, I can. In the meantime:
