Pff... I hardly consider that flaming, so I'll risk the wrath of a mod to say that 2050 is a more likely date. Smiley
(Seriously Wheels, don't let anything get at you from an unregistered guest. Not worth the blood pressure.)

To pretend this post has a purpose, what's with GarlandG? May 9th is over, is he active on Gamefaqs?

* >:(blood vessels explodes >:(* Let's just get back to FF7. How much time is accounted for for random encounters?

That's hardly flaming, the other guy went as far as to childishly insult the guys behind it.  That's why I got annoyed.

Anyway, there are a bunch of people also doing this run, not just GarlandG.  It seems that every time I go to the forums to see progress, it goes back a few steps to save some time.  This is kinda like the zelda thread, except there aren't any breakthrough glitches that save huge amounts of time, just little improvements saving maybe 5 seconds.

But looking at the way it's going, it seems that using Cait Sith's slots insta-kill limit break is much faster than not using it.  They're not doing this with speed running fully in mind, but they don't want to resort to "cheap" tricks like that.  So unless Radix accepts one run using Cait Sith's limit, and another not using "cheap" tactics, the run might not even be accepted and will just end on on archive.org.

sorry that I don't know what much ff7 but what you mean by "cheap tactic" ?  Using a skill to instant kill a enemy ?
I dont really find this cheap, just using the skill you have to bet the game and one of those skill is easy to use and kill the enemy in 1 shot, well use it ?!

Is this cheap skill is like using joker of doom in ff6 ? or old+doom in ff5? or..

I'm not sure if this matters or not, but wouldn't the PC (Eidos) version of FF7 be faster to do runs on? Battles seem to load up faster sometimes. I'm not sure if the PC version is valid though to do a speedrun on since everyone's PC is different and it will have different loading times. Has this already been discussed? Any thoughts?

Yes, they're ignoring a perfectly legal tactic.  In this case, it's a speed run challenge, and not an actual speed run.
I will knock you all down!

Yep, I'm active on Gamefaqs. Just read the Speed Run Discussions Topic that I linked to earlier for all the latest news. That topic is almost full, though, so the link won't work forever. I'll post the link to the new topic when it's been created, something that should happen before the end of the week.

I didn't say that I would start on May 9th, but that was the earliest day possible I could start. I could start now, but we're still coming up with new stuff, so I would have stop somewhere either way. However, it seems that we're getting close to an end now, so it won't take that long before I start.

(Sorry Hyperlink werent working)

EDIT: Dont know if you mentionned it but....when you will be at the chocobos farm run to the cave and avoid the MIDGAR ZOOLOOM it is quite easy and save times...save before if you have to.

Have you even gone to the GameFAQs Speed Run message board?  That's a beginner level trick, and these guys are taking this game apart.  There are tons of tricks just discovered by the people running this game, they're experts, like all speed runners should be at the game they run.

Nice sig, wasabi. Anyway, it takes a passion to run a game. Kudos to them. Grin
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!

I wasn't aware that GameFaqs had a board dedicated to speed running. Do you have a link? I can't find it on their board listings.

Not a board, a thread dedicated to speed running 7.  I just said GameFAQs message board since this is FF VII so you'd go there, and I'm sure at that time it was bumped up to the first page.
That topic appears to be one of the finest on gamefaqs.  It seems like several high quality professional style runners got together and decided to tear the game apart.  They're talking about stuff like whether its faster to rename various character to the first letter of their names to save seconds over the whole run.  They decided Cloud definately should be renamed to C(simply hit the delete key at the start to get rid of loud), and they haven't researched time saved on other characters.
I will knock you all down!
Here's the new topic:

The old topic, along with old Speed Run topics and other challenge topics, can be found here:

BTW, we have come to the conclusion that all the characters' names must be shortened to one letter. We save about 2 minutes throughout the game, IIRC.

Whoa, that's cool.
I been thinking about doing this myself. But would it be okay if I used the pc ver (if I ever do go though with it) with a few mad I installed (just a music mod to change the music and one to make the char look better)?

Also when trying the resque aeris from the shinra bild, when you need to guess the password to get a key card it only changes eatch time you start a new game so if you take the closest save from right before that you can first check what it is and save the time trying to guess/figure it out. (well it should work Since I never tryed it out before)

Go ahead and do the PC version. Since we don't have anything on FF7, the PC version will suffice until we have the PSX version (which will result in both runs being up) or until someone beats that time. Good Luck. Wink
100% runs=great to watch
I don't think any sort of modded PC version would be allowed....would it?
I'm the keeper of Time.
Oh yeah, I forgot about that. :-/

Cosmetic Differences are okay at Speed Demos aren't they? I read in the rules for submission that it woudn't matter what the characters look like (they could look like flies for all I care) as long as it **doesn't affect gameplay**. As far as the music, I think that'd be fine too. I mean hey, we've all played FF7 and know what the music and characters are like. Go ahead.

That rule was intended for the suitless password in Metroid which is part of the game. 3rd party mods have never been intended to be used, and the only exception I know of is the bunny mod in Half Life.
