You'll need to use DVDs if the files are that big otherwise you'll be sending 70CDs to nate.  DVD burners aren't overly expensive here in AUS they are $60 don't know about you guys it should be even cheaper.  To encode you are meant to use megui and AVIsynth to make the three output qualities this quite time consuming particularly due to final fantasy games tendensy to make cinematic at a different FPS to the rest of the game and making you have to correct manually.  If you want to do the long painful upload of source files I beleive nate will except those and encode them himself but that is alot to upload
Word.
If the entire run is under 3 gigs (it should be), and each CD is 700 MB, I should be able to send 5 CD's and be all set... That shouldn't be too bad, I wouldn't think. And yeah, the source files would be alot to upload, especially since I have Dialup... although I guess I could burn the run onto CD and bring it to work to upload...

I'd like to avoid doing the encoding if I can... just afraid I'll screw something up.
Word.
Update:

Just before Cosmo Canyon for the last time: 6h 43m

Next segment should be relatively easy (Cosmo Canyon and Forgotten Capital)... Then it's Diamond Weapon, Return to Midgar (Turks, Proud Clod, Hojo), and then on to the Northern Crater... it's almost over. About an hour of game time left, including the final bosses.  Cheesy

I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
Ive been looking at this for the last week or so and i want to say i will download this a fast as i can Cheesy been wanting to see a speed run of this for a very long time good luck man Cheesy
Word.
Well, though it will probably be finished in the next couple weeks (my goal is by the end of June... looks like I may get it done a little sooner than that), I still need to watch it again, write comments, send it in, have it verified, get it put in different qualities before it gets posted... that is if it passes the verification process. And I'm not completely sure about that whole process yet... Maybe I'll look into that right now.
You can do eeet!

Wow. For the long time FF7 was in motion ... but now the end is just so close and so realistic! Just to wait patiently for the next month Grin

And ... this is FF7 ... I doubt there will be problems to find people who want to verify it Tongue
Word.
Well, I've talked to Mikwuyma and I'll just be burning the files to CD and sending them to Nate when I'm finished. I've already started watching the run from the beginning, and doing the comments, so that when I'm done, I can burn it to disk and send it out the next day. My next day off is Saturday, so I will hopefully get some quality time with the run done then. I will work on it tonight when I get home though. I finished the Cosmo Canyon/Forgotten Capital segment, but I'm going to redo it tonight... Then I'll probably practice the next segment, and hopefully complete that tommorow, so that I can start with Midgar Saturday morning.

I will knock you all down!
Well, lookey what we have here:

Yup, the first segment of my Speed Run. Enjoy!

I have no idea when the next segment comes, but it will eventually.
Word.
Update:

I'm ahead of schedule, yet again. Man I love saying that.

Inside Midgar, after parachuting: 7h 05m

I made a slight error at the very end of the segment, while doing materia changes in the menu, (cost less than 1 second, and the segment is 10:33) so I may redo it... It may end up still being the fastest time, however... so we'll see. I'll probably give it a few more complete attempts tonight, see which was the fastest, and carry on. Tommorow I hope to get through most/all of Midgar... we'll see.

Oh, and interesting note... during a practice run of the DW segment, I was watching the cutscrene with Reeve, Scarlet, and Heideggar, and Reeve was calling the mainframe to see who was opening the reactors... well, instead of watching Hojo talk to Reeve, etc. and him saying he was going to send the energy to Sephiroth, the game jumped right to where you talk to Hojo before you fight him. Cloud wasn't there, but Cait Sith and Tifa "came out" of the same place, where Cloud normally stands... and then Hojo talked about how he's Sephiroth's father, etc. like just before you battle him, and then I entered into the fight with Hojo... I have no idea how it happened, or why, but I was extremely surprised, to say the least. I was hoping it wasn't a problem with the PC version of the game, because if it was, I wouldn't be able to continue with the speed run, and I would probably kill myself... Cry but luckily that was the only time it happened (happened to be my first practice run through there... and I couldn't remember whether or not it happened the only other time I played through the game on the PC version...). Figure that one out...  Roll Eyes
I will knock you all down!
Damn, Farry, you're almost done! Keep going like this and you'll be done within a few weeks.

Sounds great. I just want to say that I´m looking forward to the final product. Final fantasy VII is the only game I want to see a speedrun for. I played trough this game about 5 times last year Tongue I can´t belive that you can play this game this fast. I think my latest playtrough took 27 hours. though, it was single segment.

Edit: I meant, the only speedrun for an RPG game I want to watch Tongue

Update:

A picture is worth 1000 words...

I hope to finish the run tommorow after work, finish up the comments, burn it all to disc, and send it to Nate Monday morning.
Everything's better with Magitek
Wow!  Great job, Farringa!  Good luck finishing up this run.  I can't wait to see it (which is most likely the same for many other people).
Awesome job, Farringa, you win 100 internets for this =D
Hey, congrats man! I used to play this game all the time. (I liked the "human" plot: relating to Tifa's depression and all that.)

congrats. good stuff!

Now that I'm at work, I can kind of go over my progress yesterday...

I woke up at 9:00 am, got dressed, turned on my computer, and sat down. I didn't eat breakfast. No time. I started from inside of Midgar, and did the segment to the save right before the Turks. This segment took me a little over an hour, because I have the PC version of the game. I needed to have Tifa attack herself, so that she was in critical condition for the next segment, but since the battle was always the same, and from the same angle nonetheless, it looked impossible. I wasn't able to have Tifa select herself with attack... I finally discovered that if I turn to run away, I was able to do it, and the segment didn't take long after I figured that out. It took another half hour to convert/compress the video.

I then started the Turks/Proud Clod segment, around 10:30. In this segment, I need 6 straight Deathblows to hit... this is an extremely luck requiring segment. There are also two menu changes that need to be made in the segment, adding to the difficulty. After 5 straight hours of attempts, I have a success, but I am not satisfied. I make attempts for another 2 hours, shaving off 7 seconds over my previous attempt, and keep this one.

It's now 5:30. My wife makes me dinner, and I eat. At around 6:00, I'm back at the computer, trying to defeat Hojo. This segment is much easier, and it only takes an hour or so before I am satisfied. At 7:00, I start doing practice runs for the next segment, trying to find the quickest path. At around 7:45, I start making attempts. By 9:00, I have accepted a segment, a mere 12 hours from when I started that morning, playing a total of ~23 minutes game time. I start converting the video, and watching my speed run from Cosmo Canyon. I take a break to get online and post my final save time both here and GameFAQs. I then continue watching the run, and making comments. By 2 AM, I'm done, and I go to bed....

Tonight, I hope to finish the final segment after work (it may take another day, depending on my luck), do the comments for it, reflections for the entire run, burn it all to disc, and it should be ready to send out Monday morning (or Tuesday morning, if the luck is not with me)...

Thanks for all the intrest and support everyone has showed me. I've worked hard to be able to get this run to you, because, I, like you, have waited a long time to see it, and know you're anxious. Hopefully this will tide us over until GarlandG finishes his "Perfect Run".

torch slug since 2006

Thats the way to go.

by the way. 07:28... Damn. On my first playtrough it took me ten hours to get outside Midgar XD. Maybe six hours is my best.
I´m looking forward to see your strategys. I found it impossible to beat the final bosses with a low level like that but I guess you know what you are talking about.
Watch out for Sephirots very fast summon in the final segment Smiley
Oh gawd, super nova will be a bitch on your final time if it doesn't wipe you out first.

And it's not too difficult to get out of midgar in < 2 hours if you play a low level game =P

You mean Super Nova? No need to worry about that, as he will be defeated before he can even think about using it  Wink

...What are you doing here? Get back in the sweatshop and continue working on that perfect run! >;P

Super Nova damages by a certain percentage though, right? or would it just nuke your party, forcing you to start the segment over?
I will knock you all down!
Super Nova deals 93,75% damage, so it can't kill you. But as I said, he will never live long enough to use it.

BTW, I can't proceed with the perfect run until my new PS2 arrives, which should happen tomorrow Wink
