The Materia Keeper strategy was interesting... I didn't know that all lucky 7's damage applied for the enemy as well =|
Everything's better with Magitek
Yeah, I didn't know 7777 worked for enemies either.  Also, I just noticed that that was segment 48.  (And I thought my FF9 run had a lot of segments!)  How many segments will this run have?
There's no telling, he's uploading them as he gets them done.

I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
I knew that 7777 worked for enemies (one day a Grosspanzer I attacked got 7777 HP and killed one of my characters with a 7777 damage attack), but I didn't know poison damage counted for that as well.

Yup. One of the reasons the segment was so hard, was because the way I had it set up before, Materia Keeper could possibly attack, dealing 7777 damage... But if I have Cloud heal again, poison kicks in, and the poison does 7777. I must have got all the right situations like 3 - 4 times with the other setup, but then Materia Keeper would kill someone. Pretty annoying.

How many segments? No clue... I'm saving more often than GarlandG and Lolo26 do, just to save my sanity. But I don't know how many times I will end up saving. Sometimes, I try a segment 15 - 20 times, and decide, hey, I'm gonna save to make it easier. Like I said, someone will probably beat my time after it's posted, but at least we can get a run up for the PC version. Just please don't expect it anytime before summer... Summer is where I'll have the time to put alot of time into it.

Yes I upload segments as I go. Generally just the ones with boss battles, as I feel they are probably the most interesting. No one wants to see a 6 minute segment of me running from random encounters and buying items, or something like that...

Andrew
I just gotta say this is gonna be the most popular run ever on sda when you are done with it, FF7 is an immensely popular game and I will tell everyone I know about it when you finish.

I'm very happy to see that you are at least planning on finishing it Smiley Good Luck with the run and may the 7777's be with you Smiley

My run, though it will probably be finished first, will only whet your appitite for GarlandG's run. He's using new and improved strategies, and is the main source of the strategies I am using.

However, thank you for the kind words. It's stuff like that that makes it easier to keep going... Summer can't get here soon enough! 3 more weeks of classes, and then finals, and I'll have much more time to work on the run.

Andrew
Men, just a run of FF7 finish would be really nice. I just can't wait to see this game "speedrunned" Cheesy

Update:

Palmer is down. Video is on Youtube.

The battle could have gone slightly faster, espcially depending on my luck, but after watching the rocket FMV so many times, I could only take so much. It doesn't make that much of a difference anyway.

I'm sick this weekend, so I will probably get some more of the run done.

Andrew
I might give it a try and try this game out on a speed run. It's fresh in my memory and i think i can pull it off.

Update:

Temple of the Ancients, before Red Dragon: 4 hours, 4 minutes.

I tried the Red Dragon Segment for like 4 hours last night, no success yet.

I've decided to put a goal of completion on my run... I plan to finish it by the end of June. If I'm not in class, doing homework, at the gym, or sleeping, I will be working on the speedrun.

Andrew

Red Dragon has fallen:

Video is on Youtube:

Next up is Deamon's Gate... probably won't have time to work on the run again until this weekend.

Andrew
PwNzRd!
Wow, I am the first one to view it, nice job.

It feels good to see this run moving and moving faster towards the happy end Grin But with all this movies the hunger for this run is getting more stronger. Because this time this run is so close at hand ...

So good luck, much luck, and even more luck Farringa in ending this game. FFVII Speed Run ... sounds pretty proud Grin

Well, I've got a long ways to go... another 3 1/2 - 4 hours game time (my goal is sub 8-hours). But I am working on it more, without a doubt. Thanks for the happy thoughts.

Andrew
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
Wow, I didn't know the PC version had such crappy (what sounds like) MIDI tracks.

What exactly happened in that last segment? I'm kind of confused.

I hear the japanese record is around 7:35~7:45. It's possible, good luck =]

And yes, those are Midi tracks. PC version of FFVII is AIDS.

"What happened? I'm kind of confused?"

Well...

Tifa has the Powersoul as her weapon. It does double damage when she is in danger of dying. She is in critical health, so thats x2 damage. She also has death sentance on her (casted by Aeris using E-Skill), so thats x4 damage, and then she is using Deathblow, which either criticals, or misses, so she does x8 damage per attack, with a ~50% chance of missing.

First, I need Red Dragon to open with Red Dragon Breath on Tifa, so she is in critical health. I then start by casting death sentance, then I use deathblow, then cross slash. Because of the way the limit-break system works, limit breaks take precedence over everything else, so instead of Red Dragon getting to attack, Cloud does. So Cloud uses Cross Slash, and it paralyzes Red Dragon, so he can't attack. Then I used Deathblow again, then I throw a right arm, and then use Deathblow again. I got the perfect outcome (about a 1% or 2% probability, which is why I didn't restart when I bobbled a little in the menu at the very end of the segment... >.<), in this case, though I probably would have accepted one miss of Deathblow (the 4th would have to hit) if I did the rest of the segment flawlessly.

Humorously, because I needed Cloud to have a limit break in this battle, I spent around 5 hours trying to get a one minute and six second segment perfect (a battle with 3x flap beats in the Gold Saurcer area after the date, where I needed 2 T/S Bombs, and Cloud to get his limit), so you could probably tack that on to the time of the battle. If you did, this battle took around 10 man-hours to get right... thats why this run is taking so long.

Andrew
Geez. That's ridiculous. I don't have that kind of patience =X
fantastic run so far, keep it up. You'll become loved and famous Cheesy

That would be a speed run where they use Cait Siths instant-kill Slot Limit outcome "Game Over", and of course the Japanese version of the game which has less 'text' than the NTSC version (should bee kept in mind when comparing these two versions).
Farringa however, is doing a speed run where he is deliberately ignoring that Limit (has always been an unwritten rule in any other ff7 challenge).
Though, since he's playing the PC version, a sub 8h run should be very doable indeed.

Well, I just couldn't keep myself away until the weekend. I defeated Demon's Gate. The segment is too long to put on Youtube however, and I don't think I will be posting any more segments until I am finished with the run. Don't wanna ruin all the anticipation of the run by giving away the boss segments. I will continue to update this topic on my progress though.

Outside of Bone Village, before the end of Disc 1: 4h 20m
I hope at some point we'll get an estimate of how much time Slots really saves.  Cait Sith doesn't even come with that limit  so I doubt it's TOO long.  I hope by the time the run's finished you'll be able to tell us how much time you sacrificed for the virtue of not using the cheap instant win technique.
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!

I wish it was an unwritten rule in FF6 challenges, too. They sorely need it.

Never give up!
I just recently decided to view the video segments, but unfortunately, YouTube loads the videos slowly for me.  No worries though, because it's just on my side.

I plan on watching all segments except maybe Guard Scorpion and AirBuster (because as far as I know, the likely best strategies for those two are very straightforward).

I figure I'm going to find the answers to the following questions when these finally load (I'm also too lazy to try and find the answers in the earlier pages of this topic):
-In early segments, are you using Hypers to inflict Fury on your characters (which can be done as early as the Aps fight)?  Limit Breaks are too powerful to NOT abuse that early, when there's not a lot of alternate strategies.  Problem is, the miss chance imparted by Fury, while not affecting Limit Breaks, DOES affect magic.
-What characters are being used?  I'll be surprised if Tifa isn't in the party for at least some bosses where she isn't absolutely necessary - again, this has to do with Limit Breaks.
-Do Vincent and Yuffie play a role in this run at all?  I'll be honest, I suspect the answer to this is 'no'.
-Did you think to steal the Hardedge in Shinra HQ?  Because of low character levels, stealing the Hardedge adds a fairly large amount of damage, enough that it'll guaranteed make up the time needed to steal the thing.

That's all the questions that I have at this time, but if you decide to answer them before I get done watching, feel free.

Edit: YouTube is being so awful to me that I've only seen one part (End of Shinra HQ).  And let's just say, I actually did not think Grenades would be worth it at all.
