I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
Though imo Cait Sith is a pretty useless character.

Late-game, yes (except for Game Over, which can take out the likes of Emerald, Ruby, and Safer Sephiroth), but for early and mid-game I have to disagree with you.
...
Apparently Cait Sith's magic stat is quite good although I'm not sure if he is powerful as Aeris magically (not that it matters).

Irrelavant for a speed run just thought I would mention it.

If you're doing it based on GarlandG's guide, there's something I'm a bit curious about.

M-Tentacles, if you get them from monsters in Cave of the Gi (I think it was Sneaky Step.), cause a shit ton of damage against the Materia Keeper later (Bio3 = 2000+ damage).

This doesn't show up in any GameFAQ guides, did me a little research. But believe me, one of the monsters down there has M-Tentacles you either loot or receive after a battle. Either that, or my copy of FFVII is bugged, because honest to god, it's how I killed Materia Keeper my first few playthroughs of the game.

If I am right, it would be worth the time to pick up a few, since they'd work well on Palmer and Red Dragon as well (Both are susceptible to Poison).
Word.
Actually, we do pick up an M-Tentacle from the Sneaky Steps... And we also learn Death Sentance from them.

However, the M-Tentacle is actually used in the very next battle... a battle against Stinger #1 in the Cave of Gi.

The M-Tentacle is not needed against Materia Keeper because:

"First of all, he must open the battle with Trine. After changing our minds about ten times, we finally came to the conclusion that we need Trine. If he does, have Cloud cast Bio, Tifa Cure=All and Cait defend. Now, pray Cloud deals 99 damage with Bio and that Materia Keeper gets poisoned. If not, you can throw a Right Arm at the party to quickly get back to the title screen. If he deals 99 damage and Materia Keeper gets poisoned, you can wait until he attacks again and have Tifa Cure again. Then watch what happens. I'll let this one be a surprise for those who don't know what happens."

In my current run (I've decided to continue) I'm at the temple of the ancients before the Demon's Gate fight: 4:26:41.

I'll have no problem beating the first disc in under 5 hours and might get close to the 4:50 mark; I just wish I knew how it compared to lolo's run but since I don't have the PC version I'll never know.

Yep that would be me.

[EDIT x2] I can't post the link directly to the FAQs because of the lame rule that GameFAQs has about external linking directly to FAQs, but it's in my sig. You can go here though and click on "1.10 High Level Guide" under In-depth FAQs (It should be the Second one):

Mt. Nibel, before Materia Keeper: 3:30:33.

Havn't been playing much, because classes are back in session. This next segment takes so much luck, it's unbelievable. It'll be awhile before it's completed.

Andrew
I have a quick question if someone completed this game on the PAL version with a reasonable time lets say 8hrs thats still a 9.6hr video which is ridiculous so I was wondering if someone does it on PAL would SDA accept two versions from that person 1 at the played speed for authenticity and when sped up 1.2 times so it runs at the NTSC speed and is more watchable just otherwise this game is hardly worth doing on PAL which knocks out just about all European and Australian players
Update?
Word.
Update:

Not much progress. Ok.... no progress. Like I said, I havn't been able to give the run much of my time lately. I've made 2 successful attempts of Materia Keeper, but neither one acceptable. Dissapointing, because I've probably done this segment literally between 200 - 300 times. Why?

MK needs to open with trine (happens maybe 1/5).
Cait sith needs to cast bio for right amount of damage (1/4 chance, or so).
Bio then needs to poison MK as well (1/3?)
Tifa then needs to attack from right damage (1/2)
Cloud heals everyone.
Hope and pray no one dies... (hasn't happened yet)

As you can see, the battle requires a ton of luck... so much so, I am actually going to redo the last segment, so that I can change my materia set-up, and hopefully increase my chances of success. I plan on spending some quality time on it this weekend though.

Sorry to dissapoint you. The run it'self is going to take forever... I'm not half way through the game yet, and I started it this summer. :\

However, several of the more interesting segments are on Youtube. Just search for Farringa on youtube, and check them out.

Fair enough it is a difficult section especially trying to do it fast keep going we need a run of this game up

I hate to say it but Materia Keeper is a cake walk compared to the next section you'll have to face; Palmer is the biggest pain in the ass there is.  Granted I had to play against Materia Keeper 100+ times to get it right (I just had to have cloud cast bio for 99, not use the cait and tifa strategy) but it only takes a minute or so each time.  Palmer takes a good 10+ minutes to fail.:-p
Word.
Just an update... Materia Keeper has fallen. Next up: Palmer. Should take awhile... heh. And I don't work on the run much right now. I am going to try to work on it a little more often than I have been though...

Andrew
Everything's better with Magitek
Glad to hear that you're still working on this, even if it's just a little.

BTW, what makes Palmer so difficult?
Word.
It a battle you need to get pretty lucky on... not as lucky as Materia Keeper but pretty lucky. But the problem is that Materia Keeper is a quick battle... for Palmer you have to wait for all the talking and stuff to end before you can fight him... it's a pain.

The Materia Keeper fight is on Youtube now.

Honestly I don't think this game can be done in under 15 hours, and if it can, who would download it?

Hell, I'd download a 30-hour run. I wouldn't watch it in one sitting, but it would be cool to see in general.

There are some major weirdos (like myself) who just enjoy watching video games being played.
Doesn't sound weird to me.

I said it in another post too, but you might like www.stuckgamer.com

I'm the same. If I have choice: good speed run and semi-good movie, I prefer to see the SR. And can You tell from where You got the 30-hour speed run? I want to watch this! Tongue
Word.
Well, my run is looking like it's going to be somewhere in the vicinity of 7.5 - 8.5 hours... so hopefully you won't have to download a 30 hour run. But don't expect the run too soon... I actually hope to finish it this summer, when I have some free time. But I'll still be working 40 hours a week, so we'll see. But come the end of May, you should be getting quite a few more updates from me.

I'm glad someone is finally progressing with it. Smiley

Seeing as FF9 will be up shortly, it would be fitting to have the two best FF games online, finally!
You got a deletion wish?
