Everything's better with Magitek
Cool!  I didn't know that Merton was also wind elemental.  Thunder Shield would work perfect, since I'm getting Gogo anyway.  Thanks, Master ZED!

I think what I'll do is equip that shield on Gogo, and then boost his M. Block as much as possible so that he has a chance of blocking Calmness.  This means I'll need to buy another Bard's Hat and White Cape.  At least this way it's not an automatic loss if the 3rd Tier uses Merton.
the Watching Shadow
Yay for finding ways to JUST scrounge by xD.  I can't wait to see all the tricks and close calls you do in this run :).
It's been a while since I've watched your FF IX Speed run, and I'm very excitied about this one. FF VI is my favorite Final Fantasy, so I can't wait to see everything you do different from me. I guess I'm not into it so much as to know what would save time, but I've still played and beat it enough to really appreciate this run. Keep up the great work, I know you can do it!

Well, it looks like the highest I can get Gogo's M. Block is 66% with Man Eater, Thunder Shield, Bard's Hat, Tao Robe, and 2 White Capes, which isn't exactly the best odds for surviving Calmness.  However, I had an idea: Just before Tier 2 dies (while it's doing 10 Hits), I can unequip Edgar's Force Shield (it won't matter at this point if he dies).  Then if Tier 3 does Merton, I'll equip the Force Shield on Gogo afterwards, which will boost his M. Block up to 106%, giving him a much better chance of blocking Calmness.  However, I don't know whether stat changes that result from changing equipment during battle actually take effect.  I'm assuming they do, but there are so many bugs in this game that it's possible they don't. Wink  If anyone knows for sure, please let me know.  Otherwise, I'll do some testing later today to check for myself.

BTW, I've just realized that it's been over a week since I've recorded any attempts.  :-[

I can't test for you right now, but I tested this a long time ago, so I can confirm that it does work that way.

And don't feel bad at all about how long this takes. People will understand that you are busy and that a long SS is hard to plan attempts around. Don't let anyone pressure you. When it's done, it's done. Smiley

They'll take effect with the exception of Shell status.  You will be granted Shell immunity, however. Tongue So don't worry about Gogo not glowing green, that's just how the game is.  I assume if M.Block wasn't switched out, we would have found out by now.

Woohoo, Shell immunity!  Roll Eyes

I still want to test this strategy to see how it works out, but thanks for the info, Enhasa and Master ZED!

I feel that I'm overdue for an update.

I tested the Thunder Shield strategy with Gogo for the final battles, and it works great.  So it looks like now I don't have to worry about Merton!!!

However, I haven't made any more attempts at recording this.  (I thought I'd have more time in the summer, but I guess I was wrong...)  Just with everything that's been going on lately, I haven't had the time it takes to work on this.  I'm not sure when my next chance to try this will be (it's going to be another busy week), but I'm not giving up on this.

I might as well ask this, since it's been on my mind.  At the fish-cathing part, there are 4 types of fish: yummy fish, just a fish, fish, and rotten fish.  I believe that yummy fish and just a fish heal Cid, and fish and rotten fish hurt him.  (Please correct me if I'm wrong.)  In practicing that part, I've found that the yummy fish is always fast, and one of the bad ones (I think it's fish, but I'm not sure) is always really slow, but I can't tell any difference between the other two--they both seem to move at the same speed.  Is there any way to tell the difference between them?  What I've been doing is just picking up the yummy fish if there is one, and if there isn't, I don't pick up any fish so that I don't accidentally get a bad one, but it would be quicker if I could pick up the other good one as well.
I kept giving him good fish and yet his condition didn't improve at all =\

Cid starts at 120. When he reaches 256, he lives, and when he reaches 30, he dies. The fish give +32, +16, -4, and -16. Despite what common sense would tell you, Rotten Fish is the -4 and not -16, so if you catch medium fish (which AFAIK can't be differentiated) you will get either +16 or -4 fish. So it seems like picking up every non-slow fish is the fastest way to save Cid, and just hope to get lucky. :-/

However, every second you spend in the area, his HP goes down 1. So this means you can finish with the dying approach in 1.5 mins if you just stand around, or even faster if you feed him bad fish. The TAS saves him obviously, since the fish can be luck manipulated, but I'm not entirely sure what a SS run should do. (I think the existing segmented run saved him, but I don't remember how long it took. I think it might have been worse though.)
That explains it. Way to confuse us, Squaresoft! =[

Thanks for the info, Enhasa.  It does indeed look like if I try to save Cid, I should pick up every fish that isn't slow.  But now you got me wondering whether I should save him or not...

When I tested this part before, I found that as long as I don't have really bad luck with the fish, saving him is faster.  However, that was compared against letting Cid die just by waiting, and not giving him bad fish.  So by giving him bad fish, it might be faster than saving him--it depends on what kind of luck I get with the fish.

I think I'm still leaning towards saving him, but I think I'll test that part some more and see which way is faster on average.  Looks like it'll still be a while before I get back to recording this...

Update time!  I still haven't gotten back to recording this, because I've made some changes to the route and I want to practice and memorize those parts.  I've got it to where I need to fight at most 2 battles in the Maranda desert.  In actuality, I don't need to fight any, but doing so allows me to use Vanish/Doom against Ice Dragon in case he messes up Joker Doom, plus I won't have to sell as many things when I go shopping for the final time.

I don't want to say what times I've been getting when practicing, because my time will most likely be worse when I do this single-segment; however, they've been very encouraging.  It's making me want to get this done soon so that I can work on a segmented run. Wink

If I get all the testing and practicing done today that I want, then I should be able to start recording again tomorrow.

Edit: Just a quick question.  Does anyone know a good way for getting past the green men in Gogo's cave (specifically the second one)?  I keep having trouble at that part.

Good to hear you're working on this still  Smiley

Sprint Shoes work too =D

Gee, thanks for the help, you two...;)  I think what I need most for that part is patience.

I've just been testing the fish-catching part, and I found that, assuming I don't have horrible luck with the fish, it takes just a little bit longer to save Cid as it does for him to die (around 10 seconds longer).  The cutscene when you save Cid is 2 minutes and 8 seconds shorter than the cutscene when he dies.  So it seems to me that I should save him.
I wouldn't save him, because the gamble to save time is a bit much =P
Everything's better with Magitek
No, it's not.  It would only have been better to let him die if I end up taking more than 2 minutes longer than I do on average to save him, which doesn't seem likely to happen.

I don't know what it is, but I always seem to lose my concentration at the IAF part; this time, it was my fault that I lost there.  This run was looking good too--it was 2 minutes faster than my fastest time previous to this.  I guess I should have expected something like this to happen on Friday the 13th... :-/
Heyyy... wait.. i don't know you. Don't confuse me
That is the problem. Don't worry yourself with thing like Friday 13th. You get bad luck because you think it gives you bad luck. Its all a state of mind.

As an example.. i had one of my best days at work. Didn't get much smoother that today.

And when you start over with a new try, then don't worry about the IAF. I don't say "don't care at all", just: don't overdo it  Wink

.........................................!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That's probably the best way to describe how I'm feeling right now.  I lost at Goddess (the last statue that I fight) because I messed up Joker Doom...and this was the only time that I messed it up!  I was seriously 10 minutes away from the end of the run!  I don't think I'll get another try in today.

Time before Goddess: 4:36

See? You got that close to the end. That doesn't mean, that it will get worse. You will get closer and closer to a good run. Just remember that, when you started, you were hours away from where you're now.

Keep it up. you'll get is soon. Cheesy

Thanks for keeping me optimistic, Abaddon!  I did figure out a couple very small optimizations from that last run (mainly just better ways to arrange items so I can find them more easily, because I wasted a bunch of time when trying to sell stuff).  Also, it was encouraging to see the time that I had when that run ended, because even when my runs don't seem to go that well, they've never been more than 2 minutes slower.  I really think that the final run will be less than 5 hours!

I don't really have any progress to report; I tried recording a few times yesterday, but I never even made it to South Figaro.  I'm gonna keep trying, though. Smiley
keep at it

You're welcome. Just because i don't know much/anything of FF6 (my first FF was FF8 ) doesn't mean, i can't be of any help.

The moral support is at least as important, as knowing the right strategy. And since you seem to get to a "perfect" strategy, that leaves only the moral. And ill be damned if thats goes down the hill  Wink
