Everything's better with Magitek
Edit: See Page 10 (9-11 posts down) of this thread for route information.

I've been thinking about this run for a while (since before I finished my FFIX run).  FFVI is my favorite FF game, and since there's already a segmented run on this site, I thought I'd try to do it single-segment.  I'm planning to pretty much follow the same route and use the same strategies as the segmented run, unless anyone knows of some improvements.  There are a couple issues with a single-segment run, though.

1.  I don't think I can count on getting the second experience egg from the coliseum; thus leveling up in the dinosaur forest will take longer.

2.  There's the possibility of getting "annihilated" (especially while leveling up) during the run.  I don't yet know how likely this is to happen--I need to do some test runs.  When this happens, the game takes you back to the last place you saved, but you keep any experience that you gained since then (everything else is the same as when you saved, though).  First of all, will the run still be considered single-segment if I save every once in a while, so I can continue on if I get annihilated (still in a single sitting, of course)?  Second, since the time will reset when this happens, how do we deal with that?  It obviously wouldn't be fair to use the in-game time for the actual time, because this could be taken to extremes; for example, you could save once at the beginning of the game, level up to 99, get killed, and start back at the beginning with max levels and only a few minutes on the timer.  (As a side note, Ultima Garden actually has a separate category for a run like this.)  I was thinking a possibility would be to time the sections between saving and getting annihilated, and add those to the final time.

Edit: Ignore the above two paragraphs--the plan has changed.  I'm going to try to avoid leveling up, and I'm not going to save at all during this run.

Anyway, I'd like to hear people's thoughts on this, so I know whether or not a single-segment run would be feasible.

Edit: I forgot to mention that this will be on the SNES version.

that sounds awesome good luck on that Grin too bad i dont now much about 6.
afaik there's no problem with saving, but you won't be able to continue from a save point, so there doesn't seem to be much point in saving, unfortunately.

A single segmented Final Fantasy run (any of them really) sounds hard, wish you luck! I would definitely watch this.

There still would be a reason for saving in this, though.  If you happen to get wiped out in a battle, the game will automatically take you back to the last point you saved at.  I was thinking I could save right before a dangerous battle, so in case I get wiped out, I can continue from not very far back (as opposed to having the run completely ruined).  I'm wondering if this would still be legal in a single-segment run.
Yeah, I said it.
You could try to avoid leveling in the Dinosaur Forest altogether by abusing the Psycho Cyan glitch. I made a video, demonstrating how it works:

Basically, have Cyan use Retort. Turn Cyan into an Imp, then kill him without letting Retort being triggered (by using magic or killing him in one hit). Revive him, and assuming he survives the next turn (whether it's an enemy turn or a party member's turn), he'll erupt into an endless chain of attacks until the battle is won.

Living long enough to trigger it would be the trick, but it's basically an instant victory in any given battle in the game, and more importantly, it works in battles that Vanish/Doom and Joker Doom don't.

And while it would make the run harder, I feel that losing in battle and getting "Annihilated" should be the end of the run attempt. Though the game automatically returns you to the last point you saved at, it should be considered a "Game Over."

If dying resets the game timer then I don't think we can allow it ... else you could do a "death abuse" run that does a large number of hours to get high level characters, kill yourself, then stream through everything really fast and get a very low game timer.
*Insert witty comment here*
hah, that trick is awesome.

i'd love to see a SS run of this too.
wise fwom yo gwave
Personally, I think the idea of dying and able to continue with the run, while understandable, is still kinda meh. Seems that there would almost be no difference between a segmented run at that point, besides the fact that we'd watch failed attempts/it'd be in one sitting.

I wish you luck though.
Will Vanish/Doom be used frequently?

I don't remember if the current run uses the glitch.

there's always manual timing, which would discourage such a strategy.
The other problem with saving is that if you die, you can't prove that you continued straight from there.  Anyone could do multiple sittings and edit the video to make it look otherwise.  I'm not saying you'd do that, but just pointing it out.

Except if they were doing it single session, wouldn't you disregard the game timer and time manually?

That's an idea.  It would definitely make things easier to use that glitch.  I guess I didn't think about it since the segmented run doesn't use it--does anyone know why they didn't use it?

It's used a few times, but Joker Doom is used a lot more.

Yeah, that is a possibility.  I was afraid that continuing after dying wouldn't be allowed.  And I do agree that the run would be more impressive without dying at all.  Like I said, I'm not sure how hard this will be, and I need to do more testing to see which parts are most likely to get a game over.  I don't think there will be very many, though.

All right, I'll try to do this run without losing at all.
I like to watch
I had never heard of that glitch, either, and I can't help but think it'll be a powerful tool in your arsenal.  If I had to guess why it wasn't used in the segmented run, though, I'd say perhaps the runner wasn't aware of it at the time?

I, too, like the idea of an SS run of this game.  Since it looks like you've decided to give it a go, let me wish you good luck with it!

No, SS runs must always be timed the same way as segmented. This is why a game that only shows the timer on save points is ignored completely in segmented runs. With FF games you're going to see the game timer in the pause screen near the end all the time.

This is SDA, not TG. Ugh, just look at how many glitches they disallow.

Question: Would the Psycho Cyan glitch be allowed here?

Just Vanish+Doom trick was used in my speedrun.
Yeah, I said it.

I'm not an admin, but I'm almost sure that it would. SDA will allow just about anything other than teleportation glitches. Psycho Cyan is nothing compared to say, the Murder Beam, or completing Super Mario 64 with 16 stars.
My feelings on The Demon Rush
Lucid Faia is right, we only disallow out of bounds and teleport glitches.  I just saw the psycho Cyan demonstration and it looks fine.  I'm just wondering how someone figured out the glitch in the first place.
100% runs=great to watch
Did anyone think to try this new glitch in the GBA redux?  IIRC, several "classic" tricks were fixed in the GBA one....but if this one is ONLY NOW figured out by folk for the original...well...
Straight from GameFAQs...

Psycho Cyan Advance

The famous glitch from the SNES version, revisited. This time, there's a new method to trigger it.

Step 1: In battle, kill Cyan.
Step 2: Revive Cyan.
Step 3: Have Cyan use his Level 2 Bushido, "Sky," previously known as "Retort."
Step 4: Cast "Imp" on Cyan.
Step 5: Watch in awe as Cyan loses his mind and proceeds to attack continuously, uninterrupted, until every enemy is dead.

This glitch is the result of two smaller bugs involving "Imp" Status and being revived in combat; one that makes Cyan counter with physical attacks, rather than the "Sky" move, and another that makes Cyan counter any move performed by any character, not just a physical attack from the enemy to Cyan. As you can see, activating this glitch is done differently from the original SNES version of the game, but it results in the same thing: Cyan countering his own counterattack over and over again, until the battle is won.

Yeah, I said it.
Psycho Cyan also works in FF6 Advance, but you have to do things in a different order for it to work. Specifically, you kill and revive Cyan first, THEN use Sky (Retort), and then cast Imp on Cyan.
