I set battle speed to 6 (which affects only enemies and not my party) and message speed to 1. I also leave the battle mode on Wait for the entire run; this might make me lose some time, but it also allows me to use a wait trick to delay enemies' attacks. If you see me waiting in menus during battles, it's so that the enemies' ATB bars don't fill up during that time, which will hopefully make them do fewer attacks. I tried to use this as much as possible when it would be beneficial.
don't do you read the comments of the runs?

I usually do, but unfortunately I was way out of it last night when I posted that, and for some reason I didn't even think to check the comments. Thanks!
Yep yep yep!

I'd have to agree that a 100% run for this game is too hard, as 100% would entail skills (including rages) by definition.

You have to remember, though, that all rages is impossible, because three of them are unobtainable (Chupon, Ziegfried, and Allo Ver) due to glitches and whatnot.

Since that makes "all skills" unobtainable, there's no need to worry about Sabin's blitzes, Mog's dances, and Strago's lores.

That's what I wrote comments for! Wink  Leaving the battle mode on wait made a couple things more difficult, though; for example, I couldn't arrange my items during battle whenever I wanted, or I'd lose time.

I'm not so set on doing a 100% run.  After thinking about it for a while, it does seem that any definition of 100% would be arbitrary.  And while a segmented run would be different and could definitely be faster, I'm not sure that the time difference would make it worth it.  (I'm drawing a blank right now and can't remember what the TAS's final time is.)
Almost 4 hours even.

100%ing any RPG is pointless. Just do the segmented run.
The in-game time of the TAS is approximately 3:47:26 during the Joker Doom animation against Kefka.
100% runs=great to watch
I don't know that you'd gain anything significant from a segmented run considering how well done the single segment already is...seems like overcooking so to speak.  I should think the Kingdoms Hearts run, or some other game, would make more sense for something new/fresh.  I figure ya gotta be in recovery from FFVI dreams after all the time, thought, and attempts ya already put into the single segment run.
Are you allow to use the death warp to save point? if so this run can certainly be improve.

Do you mean where you save, then go through a bunch of stuff, then die and get taken back to where you last saved?  If so, I believe the timer doesn't reset when you do this, so there wouldn't be any advantage to it.

Yeah, I've decided not to pursue another run of this game (for a while, anyway).  I'm going to focus on Kingdom Hearts next (although progress will be slower now that I'm back in school).  And FYI, I think I only ever had one dream about FFVI while working on the run. Wink

If anyone is interested, I scanned in the cheat sheets I used for this run (just for fun).  Maybe they'll help you to know what I was thinking about during the run. Wink  (The last five pages aren't as messy as the others because I finally rewrote them after I had many so many changes that the originals had become unreadable.)

Edit: Geocities won't let me link to them.  I will have links to them on photobucket shortly.
'sorry, this Geocities site is currently unavailable'.

Perhaps try uploading to a photobucket account instead?

Weird, it works for me.  I'll see what I can do.

Edit: Oh, I see what the problem is.  I'll try uploading to Photo Bucket.
Yeah, Geocities doesn't do external linking.

For keeping track of how many MP I got in the Cave to the Sealed Gate; I had to get at least 16.  (You can tell how many times I got to that point.)

This thread lives!!!  Anyway, after seeing some others do audio commentaries for their runs, I've been toying around with the idea of doing a commentary for this run.  However, it would be pretty long, and I'm not sure anyone would want to listen to me for ~5 hours (I think that I have an annoying voice anyway).  Would anyone even be interested in audio commentary for this?  I don't know that it would have a lot of humor in it, but I could at least describe my experiences with doing this run single-segment, which may or may not be interesting to others.

Your call ;-]

Curious though, how many people have accused you of "omg cheatzing b/c you used 1 hit killz!!!1!"?

None that I can remember, actually, although I have had some people accuse me of doing the run on an emulator.  I've actually had more people accuse me of cheating on my FFIX run--things like, "There's no way you can do that much damage at level 30!" or, "It's impossible to get no encounters in that area!" Wink
I want off the ride....
people just dont understand the awesome that is essentia destroying her some final fantasies...

Which more need to be destroyed..

Heh, close enough. XD
I would say go for it Essentia. Smiley

I would personally be really interested and it would make a pretty nice addition to your awesome run.
RPG games I would have thought go perfectly with audio commentaries.  Being only a casual player of final Fantasy games, I doubt I even notice half the strats that are used, let alone understand them.  Having someone pointing them out during the run would be somewhat handy.  I wonder if you would have alot to talk about once you get to the Joker Doom heavy world of Ruin... but that might be a prime example of me showing said ignorance to the game.

In short, yeah, love a commentary and would for sure give it a listen.
Talk to the Hand
Funny story, as I was considering potential ways to fill out some of the more boring parts (IE the 23 minutes of leveling up) in my Willow run for a hypothetical commentary, one option I was considering was waxing philosophical about audio commentaries in general. You know, something like "There's a segment of the speedrunning audience that thinks that all runs should be accompanied by audio commentary. but the thing is, coming up with an engaging audio commentary is hard, and this is only goes double for really long runs, like Essentia's Final Fantasy VI run, for instance." Tongue

On a more serious note: I'll be honest, the main draw for me with RPG runs in general is mainly the boss sections and how people beat bosses at ridiculously low levels, as generally speaking, everything else is "Run from every battle you can". So I'm not really sure how useful a commentary for the whole run would be to me personally. That said, others may disagree, and as this is Final Fantasy VI, I imagine that I'm probably in a minority as regards this specific run (Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying RPG runs don't take skill by any means--it's just that most of the skill is centered on the boss strategies).

I talk a bit about the goals of my Rygar commentary in one of the comments on my site *points to sig wink wink nudge nudge*,  but here's the important part:

Quote:
The thing is that doing a useful running commentary (In my case, the two criteria for this would be “not just repeating my text commentary” [Which is going to be very difficult for anything other than Rygar, as I went into an obsessive level of detail in the text commentaries for pretty much everything else] and “doesn’t just say things like ‘and here I’m going to the next objective…and here I’m killing an enemy..’”) is actually really hard to do! In the case of Rygar, I think I did a pretty okay job of it, as I discussed the NTSC/PAL differences in the game plus its “can you go to the last level” programming, neither of which I discussed in the text commentary.

So yeah, there are a couple ways you can you can go about a commentary besides just explaining or re-explaining the tricks and tactics used in its creation. You can try to be funny. I'm not really a comedian, so I went in another direction--hit the viewer with a bunch of fun, little-known facts about the game in question. Rygar lended itself well to that sort of thing, as there are a couple points in the run where I'm just making long treks from place to place or just pounding on giant snails for a minute and a half that doesn't really need explanation, so I could fill the space out with these fun factoids. So if you think you can be funny, or you can really provide four-plus hours of commentary, then go for it!

Lastly, have you heard my voice?! And that didn't stop me from doing a commentary! Get to it, woman! Wink
You got a deletion wish?
Do it, Ess!  And/or for 9 as well.
