atro_city, I've uploaded most of the segments (all that are under 10 minutes) to YouTube, if you want to watch them there: http://youtube.com/profile?user=EssentiaFour
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
Actually, that's quite an interesting idea. Why can't the site have a director's account on youtube to "host" the videos, or at least a compromised youtube-quality set of videos. I have a feeling that should bring a load more people to the site too, and may allow for more speed runs on the site. Thoughts anyone?

The thing is most people who are interested enough to watch a speedrun, or skilled enough to attempt their own run, already know about this site. Bringing the largely unwashed masses of Youtube here will have very little positive effect on the community, and could in fact damage it (just look at the comments left for any given video. Would you want this forum to degenerate to that level?) Now I realise that is a pretty sweeping generalisation, but unfortunately it holds true.

Speaking of which – this speedrun was recently posted in the torrent section of… a certain website (hint: the name I’m using…). The response was less than desirable, since at the time of writing there is not a single positive reply, just the typical flaming and claiming of achieving a better time (read: lying) that one comes to expect from such sites.

mmm, well this seems reminiscent of Digg when it was still small, but becoming very large very fast. It seemed the small crowd didn't want to be part of something larger. It seems to be so much easier to use now.

Plus, even ignoring the thing about getting people coming here...wouldn't it be just so easy to look at a speed run (not HQ obviously, but just to look at) on Youtube rather than through a flash video hosted by Archive.

Oh, and one last thing. I haven't actually fully tested Archive embedded flash, but there are two things I am thinking. 1) I'm not sure whether it does fullscreen like YouTube (maybe it does, maybe it doesn't) and 2) YouTube works really well with the internet browsers on consoles (I'm thinking the Wii here). And you know what, there are a lot of times when I've got my crappy computer doing kinda processor intensive stuff and it would be easy to watch a run of a game on a games machine. Got a nice feel to it. I am also tired, but I think I make sense...
i'm waiting for the final version of the wii web browser to see if it has flash 8. only has flash 7 atm. if it only has flash 7 then i may consider making a flash 7 autodetect for the embedded flash. atm afaik there is no youtube director's account that allows you to upload more than 10 minute long videos because that is not what their leadership wants to do with the site (i.e. they don't want all of us leeches to put all our crap their like google does). google is superior (and used to be vastly superior).
guffaw
also, runners themselves are free to upload their stuff to youtube if they so desire.
Ben Goldberg
Well I can't upload my speedruns that are longer than 10 minutes, even though I signed up for a Director's account.
I have only watched the begining so far and it is great, but holy hell the intro to this game is very long. lots of talking and cutscenes

Not sure which site you're talking about, but maybe it's best if I didn't see the comments there...  And sure, people could get a better time by skipping FMVs, but it would still take a lot of work/luck to do.

Tell me about it...;)  And the annoying thing was that the very first segment was difficult, because I needed to steal the Mage Masher in a reasonable amount of time, and so I got to see that intro quite a bit.  It took one extra turn here to steal it, but oh well.

Well, the final wii browser is now out, so test it. I have tried to see if anyone has said anything about the really detailed specs of it online, but can find nothing interesting. Can't test to see if they have better flash player, but maybe...

Also, I didn't realise about YouTube...I thought that the whole point of Director was you had all the restrictions removed. Also, what about this quote?:

"The following month, in an attempt to strengthen its policy against copyright infringement, YouTube set a 10-minute maximum limit on video length (except for content submitted via its Director Program, which specifically hosts original material by amateur filmmakers). However, the real cutoff is 10:58.[citation needed] This restriction is often circumvented by uploaders, who instead split their original video into smaller segments, each shorter than the 10-minute limit."

After all, the YouTube videos could also be embedded into this website, rather than embedded from (as far as i know) archive. Although, this could be in vain since I remember reading that the SDA guys are looking for alternative hosters. Also, isn't cachefly meant to host content...plus virtually every good podcast is sponsered by them Smiley Maybe that's an option?

Finally, I've downloaded it (max quality), and it really is looking good so far. Very nice.

The run was excellent.  Congrats Essentia!  Hopefully this is the first of many runs from you we'll all get to ultimately marvel at in the future of SDA.

This was actually my 4th run to be posted on SDA.  Dr. Mario 64 ftw! Wink
I assume the patience with avoiding RE was the most difficult thing right? The music in this game is so good btw! I love you are not alone <3

The boss fights are the best thing with this run. They're so brilliant that it is really worth watching almost 9 hours of this.

limitglove ftw.

Even as I typed it, I felt SOMETHING was off.  So let this hopefully be the NEXT IN THE SERIES OF RUNS that increase SDA's power and depth!

If anyone has been watching this run on YouTube, I've uploaded all the segments now.  (The ones over 10 minutes are split into multiple videos.)

Yes, avoiding random encounters was the thing that took the most patience.  The worst place was Terra--just before I started recording that segment, I did one last practice run through it to make sure I knew what to do, and I actually got no encounters.  So then I started recording, and it took me almost 3 hours to get no encounters again.  That segment really tried my patience...

The other thing that was difficult was getting Lucky Seven to do 7777 damage.  Somehow I got it on my first try against Amarant, but all the other battles where I used it (Lani, Hilgigars, and Ark) took many tries.

And I agree: You're Not Alone is awesome!  I'm glad that I had good music to listen to while doing this run.  (I have to have the sound on when I speedrun, or it just doesn't feel right.)

Thanks! Smiley  I am planning to do more runs, so no need to worry.
Like SantaC said, the boss fights were great. I never imagined that Trance Kuja could be beaten in only 1.5 minutes!
Talk to the Hand
As I've said elsewhere, the exciting parts of these runs to me are the parts where bosses are beaten at insanely low levels. So naturally, I downloaded the last segment. Nicely done there!

Question not really related to the run per se: This is one of many games on my "got to almost the very end but never actuallly finished" list. This is the "drop references to every previous game in the series" game...did the ending--including the "deus ex machina" final villain that it's often criticized for--strike anyone else as being very reminiscient of FFIV?

Oh yes, the ending of FFIX really reminded me of FFIV.  Especially when after you beat Necron, he says, "I am eternal.  As long as there is light and dark..." which remindes me of what Zeromus says: "I will not disappear as long as there is evil in the hearts of people."  I still don't understand where Necron came from, though.  Tongue

The part I loved about the final segment was when Grand Cross did absolutely nothing to Zidane.  (It's supposed to cause all kinds of status effects, but only stone, heat, confuse, stop, venom, or death would have been bad.)  I wasn't counting on that, but it was pretty cool.

I don't think anyone does, to be honest. That's one of my gripes about the game. The final battle means a lot less and has a lot less impact if it's just some random ass incarnation of ultimate evil.
Could of been 5 Minutes shorter for sure...

...make that 45 with all the crappy FMV
Necron is Garland's creation, the Soul Divider at the center of "the light" within Gaia that was preventing Gaia's souls from flowing in the cycle of life (hence the stagnant Mist created) while letting Terran souls flow in to accumulate and eventually replace Gaia's natural civilizations. Kuja was created to be the emmisary of Necron, the one who could go to Gaia and eviscerate the native people to speed up the process. The reason why he appears suddenly is because in order for one to confront him they would have to come to the nexus of Gaia's dimension and "the light"/ cycle of life. This occurs when Kuja destroys the physical forms of the party with his final Ultima assault. Necron comes to the conclusion after observing how Trance Kuja caused so much destruction in his effort to prove he existed/ wasn't a doll that all life desires death. As the living embodiment of "the darkness of eternity" Necron intended to do this by destroying existence as well as the cycle of life entirely via the forced introduction of the final dimension/ zero world. Granted, the "I am eternal" line brings up the question of whether he is truly capable of regeneration or was just meaning that he is immortalized by the concept that all life is fated to die, and it's a mystery as to how the party dies yet fights a physical Necron with physical bodies moments later. But if you pay attention to Garland's speeches and Necron's monologue it becomes less "out-of-the-blue" and "mysterious".

As for the run- thank you very much, Essentia. I've been waiting forever to see a Final Fantasy IX run where someone has the patience to just tear through this game. Limit Glove was expected, but I was really amazed to see how much damage the party was capable of doling out at the end as well as how invaluable Lucky Seven and Charge! can be to a run like this. I wish you the best on your SS FF VI run.
The characters don't 'die' after Trance Kuja, they get knocked out lol

Explain how Phoenix Downs work =]

Other than that, great explanation. I always thought FFIX's storyline was a bit wierd.

Yes, I'm sure it could have been if I'd had more luck.  Anyone is welcome to try to do it faster. Wink

David-Alexander Cabrera, thanks for that explanation, although how do you know that Necron was Garland's creation?  Does it say that somewhere in the game?  I must have missed that somehow. Anyway, glad you enjoyed the run!
I have almost watched all of it now, and the run is very impressive of course. There is however some VERY slow parts which drove me nuts. I was like, argh, stupid text, I wanna see some action!  Wink

what did you get for winning the card game btw?
