So, I had an idea a couple of days ago that I haven't entirely fleshed out yet, but here it is anyway - Final Fantasy Fridays!

The idea is simple, every Friday, a Final Fantasy game is raced. The category would be agreed upon by the runners.

As I said, this isn't entirely fleshed out, but I wanted to present it here, and gauge interest in a weekly event for something like this, considering there's stuff like Saturday night OoT Bingo, etc.

What do you think?

Sounds like something I'd be up for.
My only concern though, is that some people wouldn't own a SNES/JP FFV cart for example, and would need to emulate it.
Surely some rules could be agreed with this, also?
Given the relay reace was done with emulated FFV on three of the four players, I doubt that would be an issue (usually races, on SRL anyway, allow emulators in general anyway)
SPEEDruns not SAFEruns
A majority of the FF games emulate very well, and are actually more difficult to run due to input lag. I don't see that being an issue for anyone, especially if it's just a weekly race for funsies. Would be a fun time Wolfman, but having that many games to choose from may be difficult as well. As well as posting here you should hit up the #rpg irc for some feedback!
Let's do it. I'm working on VI right now, and it'd be cool to see some different strats, and get some practice in. Are we talking strictly I-VIIII? Or would there be some tactics thrown in the mix?
You're pretty good...
I know nothing about speedrunning final fantasy games, but I think that this is a super good idea. I would like to see some races of ff i-ix
Bahamut is in envy
Depends on which game, but I would be down for it Cheesy
So i'm thinking we should do a FF4 Paladin race this friday then do alternating games each week. We have a skype group that was created from the FF Relay that is still active, so if anyone wants to be added just post here or add me The_LCC on skype, then i'll add you to the group.

The question is what time we should start it up. I'm thinking 7~9 PM EST on Fridays to try an cover the most areas possible.

I'd love to do a Paladin race. I'm playing on an emulator (Snes9x 1.53), but can stream the race (required by SRL rules) as long as that's acceptable.
I want off the ride....
As long as its good for SRL its good for this! We don't want to leave you out! Honestly, its going to be one heck of a race =D just because i said so >3
I'm totally down to do a Paladin race! If it's after 5:45pm PDT, I have to work until then. Also I need to dl all the software and everything and set up my twitch, but I need to do that anyway, so I'll do that tonight.
The time I've decided on is 8PM EST for the FF4 race to paladin tomorrow. Do it up!
I'll be on Skype tomorrow if anyone is interested in practice runs, just shoot me a message.

I don't know much about using SNES emu's. At best I can use the PSX remakes if things turn bad, assuming no one would mind.
Let's get sweaty
I'm up for learning IX. When I played it as a kid, (as far as I remember, anyway), my Disc 1 time was around 4 and a half hours. So yeah. I need to learn a hell of a lot.
Final Fantasy Fridays are in full swing now. It's been a pretty successful endeavor so far!

Here are some of the race results:

Final Fantasy 4 to Paladin -- won by elMaGus with a time of 1:01:30 (not on SRL due to bot troubles), I believe there were 9-10 participants
Final Fantasy 5 to HUAH! -- won by Jenja with a time of 1:22:41, 5 participants
Final Fantasy 6 to Kefka @ Narshe -- won by LCC with a time of 1:28:28, 13 participants

All in all the runs have been a blast with a great group of guys! Final Fantasy 7 Midgar Escape is on deck tonight at 8pm EST!
Just for clarification, is that race tonight restricted to platform? I know that the PC version has a huge advantage over the PSX version.
SPEEDruns not SAFEruns
It IS NOT restricted doicm, but runners participating with PSX just need to understand they will have a SIGNIFICANT disadvantage. If you want to have fun and race I don't see an issue with it
check your pantry
I can consistently do FF8 if anyone would like to race! Let me know. Smiley
DO THE MEATEO
Great idea! I like how the games are different every week, it's good motivation to learn new games, even if its just parts of them for the time being Cheesy
So in order to work with people's schedules we've decided that the next race will be FF7 at 1pm EST on saturday, since the first attempt at racing FF7 fell through. Be there!
SPEEDruns not SAFEruns
Man, if I wasn't at work I'd be on it. Have fun dudes
Sounds like a blast. I won't be attending but would love to see how this progresses over the next few weeks. Have fun guys!

This may be a bit late, but if this week's race is happening, what's the game going to be?
We've actually been having a bit of a debate on whether to run 8 this weekend or back to 4, as well as whether or not to run it on Friday or Saturday. Strawpoll time!

Please only vote if you plan on participating.
