Fucking Weeaboo
Now that this game is out stateside, I've been having some fun with this and it's oh so very much speed runnable.  Granted it's LONG (I'm clocking in at over 7 hours at this point), but it's doable.  The final boss is cheap as hell with uber powerful hits (that can hit you just about anywhere on screen) and lots of phases, which I hate about bosses, but it's got a very good storyline.

Only downside for runners?  Cutscenes aren't skippable.  Bleh.

Anybody that tries this needs to segment FOR YOUR SANITY.

Hoping to get some strats going, mainly to deal with the last 2 bosses (especially the final).  I mean, when you have 12 HP and the final boss is clocking you for 7 IN ONE HIT... oh boy.  I've counted at least 4 phases (I think I've made it to the last one, since they talk about "the core", and given how well protected it is...), and it's physically exhausting.

Segmenting Plan (in depth to come later):

Segment 01 - Save at the Clock in town.  Target time: 14:00 - 14:30
Segment 02 - Save after leaving the ruins and Belle leaves.  Target time: 40:15 - 40:45
(One fight here - HP to 11)
Segment 03 - Save at Cid's Workshop.  Target time: 45:30 - 46:00
(One fight here - HP to 12)
Segment 04 - Save at Cid's Workshop, after your tasks there are done.  Target time: 51:30 - 52:00
Segment 05 - Save at the Vineyard.  Target time: 1:01:30 - 1:02:00
(One fight here - HP to 13)
Segment 06 - Save at Guild Ship Passageway.  Target time: 1:28:30 - 1:29:00
(One fight here - HP to 14.  Battle Bahamut.)
Segment 07 - Save at Guild Ship Passageway, after visiting Vaigali.  Target time: 1:32:30 - 1:33:00
Segment 08 - Save at Costa Faguita.  Target Time: 1:49:00 - 1:49:30
Segment 09 - Save at Grassland Station.  Target Time: 2:04:00 - 2:04:30
Segment 10 - Save at Grassland Station, after visiting "Colonel" in the library.  Target Time: 2:17:00 - 2:17:30
Segment 11 - Save at Clock Plaza, after visiting Cid.  Target time: 2:27:30 - 2:28:00
Segment 12 - Save at Red Leaf Station.  Target Time: 2:37:30 - 2:38:00
Segment 13 - Save at Tribulation Bridge.  Target Time: 2:44:00 - 2:44:30
(One fight here [Samurai Goblin] - HP to 15.)
Segment 14 - Save at Chocobo Barn.  Target Time: 2:51:30 - 2:52:00
Segment 15 - Save at Yuke Sky City.  Target Time: 3:20:30 - 3:21:00
(Battle Blaze.)
Segment 16 - Save at Clock Plaza, just before going to the Junkyard.  Target Time: 3:39:30 - 3:40:00
(I forgot to check if you can take the train from Bridge Town to Lilty Castle.  That will save time if you can take it.)
Segment 17 - Save at Costa Faguita, after the dance.  Target time: 3:58:30 - 3:59:00
Segment 18 - Save at Grassland Station, after Aerial Prison.  Target time: 4:35:30 - 4:36:00
(Time can probably be lower here with a better boss fight at Aerial Prison.)
Segment 19 - Save at Grassland Station, after 2nd Resurrection.  Target Time: 4:53:00 - 4:53:30
(Built the Gold Earrings, Gold Ring, and Silver Ward.  Attack 2, Defense, 3, Focus 3, Range 1, Luck 1)
Segment 20 - Final Battle!  Target Time: 5:35:30 - 5:36:00

Test run time: 5:35:34.

Eh...I didn't think the game was long at all.  I beat it in 9 hours for our review, and that was playing through rather casually.
Fucking Weeaboo
It definitely wouldn't be long if the cutscenes were skippable.  Segment 01 is almost entirely cutscenes.  I think out of that 14 minutes, about 3 of it was play time.

Saw your test time just posted, nice job.

Thanks.  I did make a few mistakes here and there and had a few restarts at the final boss.  I figure I can probably chop out 15 minutes more at least, but that's just a guestimate at this point.  I hope to start working on a more thorough run soon.

Started v2.  Will fill in times as I go along.

Segment 01 - Save at the Clock in town.  Time: 0:14:08
Segment 02 - Save after leaving the ruins and Belle leaves.  Time: 0:38:21
(One fight here - HP to 11)
Segment 03 - Save at Cid's Workshop.  Time: 0:41:44
(One fight here - HP to 12)
Segment 04 - Save at Cid's Workshop, after your tasks there are done.  Time: 0:47:14
Segment 05 - Save at the Vineyard.  Time: 0:54:45
(One fight here - HP to 13)
Segment 06 - Save at Guild Ship Passageway.  Time: 1:13:58
(One fight here - HP to 14.  Battle Bahamut.)
Segment 07 - Save at Guild Ship Passageway, after visiting Vaigali.  Time: 1:17:40
Segment 08 - Save at Costa Faguita.  Time: 1:29:12
Segment 09 - Save at Grassland Station.  Time: 1:40:40
Segment 10 - Save at Grassland Station, after visiting "Colonel" in the library.  Time: 1:49:00
Segment 11 - Save at Clock Plaza, after visiting Cid.  Time: 1:57:07
Segment 12 - Save at Red Leaf Station.  Time: 2:05:40
Segment 13 - Save at Tribulation Bridge.  Time: 2:09:44
(One fight here [Samurai Goblin] - HP to 15.)
Segment 14 - Save at Chocobo Barn.  Time: [v2.2 - 2:15:04]
Segment 15 - Save at Yuke Sky City.  Time: [v2.2 - 2:41:38]
(Battle Blaze.)
Segment 16 - Save at Clock Plaza, just before going to the Junkyard.  Time: [v2.3 - 2:54:01]
(I built the Silver Ward and Gold Earrings here [v2.2] (also Gold Ring in v2.3), to increase my attack and defense for Aerial Prison.)
Segment 17 - Save at Costa Faguita, after the dance.  Time: [v2.3 - 3:10:55]
Segment 18 - Save at Grassland Station, after Aerial Prison.  Time: [v2.3 - 3:39:06]
Segment 19 - Save at Clock Plaza, after 2nd Resurrection.  Time: [v2.3 - 3:54:35]
(Built the Gold Ring [v2.2].  Attack 2, Defense, 3, Focus 3, Range 1, Luck 1)
Segment 20 - Final Battle!  Time: [v2.3 - 4:28:43]

Note: I had to go back and restart at Segment 10, since I missed my Tableware, necessary for my Silver Ward that I build in Segment 19, plus I skipped getting a money chest in that segment.  If I need money, there's plenty more (and better) chances to get some later.  This saved time in the end.

Note 2: The Aerial Prison boss didn't drop my designer dart, so the best I can get is the Copper Ring.  I may go back and redo Seg 18-20 if I really need it for the fight.  19's save point was pushed to the Clock Plaza as it's closer to the ending, so in case I screw up the boss, there's less to redo.

Note 3: I did make a few blunders in the final boss fight.  I will likely attempt that segment again later.  But this is my first end time for v2.  Over an hour faster...WOW.

Note 4: While Crystal Armor in Segment 18 drops it, it seems to be somewhat random.  Sometimes it's my Designer Dart, sometimes it's a simple Nut.  Though looking at my test run save files, I picked up 2 Designer Darts.  One was obvious at the boss, but one was prior to that segment.  Question is...how and where.  Looking at my save files I got it in Segment 14 (Clavat Monastery), as I didn't have it on my post Segment 13 file, but did have it on my post Segment 14 file.  Time for video watching. - Edit: Found it!  Snow section of the monastery.  You have to go to the right after you exit that door during the 3rd search for "Goldenrod". Smiley

Note 5: v2 is almost done.  Still some improvements needed on the final boss fight.  Figures that I get to the last phase and then crap out a few times.  I should be able to finish tomorrow.  Haha I wish.  I almost forgot about the train station in Moogle Woods, that is RIGHT BEHIND where I warp in from Yuke Sky City (Segment 16).  Well, time to redo some segments...again...
Fucking Weeaboo
Thought I'd share a little video from my test run.  It's a small portion of the game that is no longer necessary and is not in the v2 run, but it's cool and I have to share.

Fucking Weeaboo
I got a hold of my copy of the strategy guide today, so I hope to come up with some new ideas on how to chop the time down further.  I had found out about some life increasing items that are in chests, which can cut out some of the regular fights.  I think I can get 1 or 2 quickly that way.  Plus I'm also looking at finding some materials to create better armor.

Here's what I'm facing for making armor.  You get three pieces: Amulets/Wards, Earrings, and Rings.

Amulets/Wards:
Current in v2.3
Silver Ward - 280 Gil (Defense 2, Range 1)
[Can randomly get: mythril plate [dmg taken -1], starry charm [dmg nullify 10%]]
*Capsule Toy (via UMA News 6)
*Tableware (Library)
*Hand Strap (via UMA News 7)

Alternates:
Pearl (400 Gil) [3 Defense, 0 Range, 1 Luck]
[Can randomly get: Hope Pearl - Damage Taken -1 - Lao Tzu Pearl - Resist Static]
*Tableware (Library)
*Holy Relic (purity fountain in Rivelauge Monestary, where you found Belle)
*Crown (Far end of the Yuke Village, where I normally talk to the 2nd Yuke.)

Sapphire (520 Gil) [4 Defense]
[Can randomly get: Blue Giant [Resist Flinching], Lapis Lazuli Charm [Damage Nullify 10%]]
*Crown (Far end of the Yuke Village, where I normally talk to the 2nd Yuke.)
*Ornamental Plant (Lost Emperor Drop, Cherry Checkpoint for 1800 Gil)
*Trading Card (Fountain Park for 300 Gil)

The Pearl alternate will be used more then likely.  While I can get the 3 items for the sapphire, coming up with the Gil easily for the Ornamental Plant might be hard to do quickly.  The items for Pearl is all in chests right on the way.

---
Earrings
Current in v2.3
Gold Earrings - 312 Gil (Attack 2, Defense 1, Luck 1)
[Can randomly get: pyrite earrings [1 life/10 sec], gold tumi earrings [capture time x2]]
*Spice (Forest battle, or at Vaigali's place)
*Tin Can (UMA News #8 )
*Buried Treasure (Clavat Monestary)

Alternates:
Pearl Earrings (416 Gil) [3 Attack, 1 Luck]
[Can randomly get: Hope Egg [Time Extend, Medium], Corno Earrings [Damage Dealt +1]]
Ivory Object (Moogle Woods, Middle Branch)
Fireworks (Climb the Chains in the Showfields)
Tea Leaves (UMA News #10)

The Pearl Earrings should be doable, as long as I can quickly get that set of fireworks.  The Ivory Object is a bit out of the way too, but the extra attack point will greatly help in the final boss fight.  Especially if I get Corno Earrings.

----
Rings
Current in v2.3
Gold Ring - 384 Gil (Focus 3)
[Can randomly get: Pyrite Ring [Prevent slipping on ice], Draupnir [Double Gil Drops]]
*Tongue (via UMA News 4)
*Designer Dart (Clavat Monestary, UMA 13)
*Stuffed Specimen (get in Library or UMA 9)

Alternates:
Ruby Ring (640 Gil) [4 Focus]
[Can randomly get: Flame Ring - 1life/5 sec - Scarab Ring - Rolling Deals Damage]
Stuffed Specimen (get in Library, also UMA 9)
Board Game (UMA news 15) [another one from one of the lower 4 doors in Ghost City.]
Replica Gun (Goblin Hunters [RARE], Ahriman [RARE], Death Machine (Semi Rare), Omega Slave (Common), 8th Treasure Hunt)
[Note: Omega Slave has the Flame Thrower)

Ruby Ring would be nice, but Replica Gun is either a rare random drop, or will come WAY too late for me.  Having the focus BEFORE Death Machine and Omega Slave is more beneficial then for just the final boss.  And Gold Ring is ridiculously easy to get.

---
There's a couple of items with even better stats (Like the Ankh Earrings, with FIVE Attack!!!!), but it's gonna be way too difficult to get, since a lot of them depend on random item drops from enemies that either I don't see, don't fight, or see/fight way too late.  The best for the 3 stats I need (Attack, Defense, and Focus) would be Carbuncle Amulet (4 Defense, 2 Range) or Sapphire (4 Defense), Ankh Earrings (5 Attack), and Ruby Ring (4 Focus).

1096 Gil Needed

(I can't get the Fireworks, since with the Misima Stream active, the area to it is sealed off.  So I'll have to get the Gold Earrings instead of the Pearl Earrings.  With this, I have to go back and redo Segment 7 on, to pick up the Spice at Vaigali's Place, unless I can buy it later.)

---

I made it through, though I had a couple minor screwups on the final boss fight, so I'll go back and redo it later.  But to wind up chopping off yet another 15 minutes is something I'm happy about. Smiley  If I do everything right in the final boss fight, I might get it under 4:13:00, but probably just barely.  I'll admit I almost screwed up my gil count, but I got lucky and having restarted Seg 16 enough, caused Chime to wander onto the train, allowing me to shake her sexy booty for money. Smiley

---

Initially ended with 4:13:38, but since I screwed up a bit at the final boss, went back and redid it.  Wound up with a virtually perfect final boss, thus bringing my time to sub-4h 13m.  I'm happy with this and will be burning to disc, typing up my notes, and submitting.

I may do a Single Session run too, since the strategy will be virtually identical.  I just might wind up with a few more mistakes, since there's a little bit of luck I have to depend on for some of the boss fights.
Fucking Weeaboo
I finally decided to take a crack at Single Session running this game.  It's a little exhausting, since you're basically spending a good chunk of 4 hours shaking the Wiimote. ^^;;

My first run though went pretty well.  I know I made a couple of big blunders - I screwed up the Zus in "Between Existence and Oblivion" (cost about 4 minutes), the battle against the robotic guards at the Aerial Prison (probably about a minute here) and the final phase of the final boss fight (no surprise there, probably cost about a minute here).  Overall it was pretty easy to do, since a solid strat is already in place.  I'll work on improving this later.

SS v1 - 4:16:47
Exoray
Picked this up a couple of weeks ago, just finished it. Looking forward to seeing this run.

Your first SS attempt came within 3 minutes of your segmented? Well, shows how much of the game is really only running and cutscenes.
Since you haven't showed any videos of the test runs I can't help much with discussing strategy, I guess that will have to wait until the run has been posted and improvement discussions start up.

Did you use the double-rolling technique? Haven't timed how much that saves compared to regular rolling but I bet it would make a notable difference in the long run.

Did you use the batteries for the last phase of the final battle? The spread of the damage would proably make it faster than just yanking the pieces out one by one.
Fucking Weeaboo
Double rolling appears to be some kind of glitch.  It has to deal somehow with how you flick the remote around and thus isn't reliable.  If I get it, I get it.  If I don't, no point in restarting a segment over it.

As for videos, I did post up one entire run, but YouTube blocked out Segments 15, 19, and 20, so you'll have to wait to watch it all.

While you may think throwing them back may be faster, yanking them out with the focus points (which speeds up the capture time) I have I believe is faster, plus I don't have to take the time to aim closely (I certainly may be wrong though).  You don't have to rip off all of the pieces, especially in the last part of the fight - the far side pieces aren't necessary.  I will agree that using the guns in the turret portion helps a lot because you can take out the arm.
Exoray
I can double roll pretty consistently, it's just that there's a tiny window for when you need to trigger the second roll. A brief moment before Layle's feet hit the ground from the first roll is the time to trigger the second roll. Once I get a rhythm going I'm usually able to double roll 4-6 times in a row before messing up. Triple rolling does not seem possible, atleast I've never managed doing it.

Oh you did have one up? I was lazy, never checked your channel, only looked at the "other videos from this user" from the dance video you linked to.

I didn't mean throwing the pieces back, I agree that that is quite likely slower. The damage they do doesn't seem to be enough to beat two yankings time-wise. What I meant was to pull the battery cannons and use them to shoot at the middle parts (they do spread shots very rapidly, so should be able to get two parts down at the same time). If you reach around the top of the screen in the final (and second to final phase) you can snatch a battery even though you are not seeing them.
Fucking Weeaboo
I've got the run on a playlist, so look on the right in the playlists section (which is what appears first by default).

As for the batteries - they reappear after you've already ripped all 4 off once?  Ok, THAT is interesting.  I'll have to look into that.
Exoray
It just struck me that I think I died on the second to last phase.  A try again from the beginning of that phase might have caused the batteries to respawn. I gotta test this to be sure that was the reason though.
Fucking Weeaboo
Well, the batteries better take off a lot of life in that case, because even if you die as fast as possible, you probably lose a minute right there...so unless they respawn like the arm does (which I don't think so), that would be the only way it would be beneficial.
Exoray
Oh the arm respawns even when you haven't died? Well then there's a good chance the batteries will as well. The arm respawn was what made me think it had something to do with my death, but if it shows up again normally then I'm pretty sure the batteries will as well. I was about to check this out but I accidently had my auto-save at the final battle overwritten -.-
Fucking Weeaboo
Yeah, even if you kill the arm in the cannon phase, he comes back for the next phase.  Which is fricken annoying.
Exoray
Didn't check out the end battle yet, but here's some Double rolling in the meantime.

bah, YT messing up. It's set as public and says so on the video list as well, dunno what they are doing.

I set it to private and back to public again, see if it made any difference.

edit:
Ok so about the batteries, they don't respawn. However they don't need to be picked up for that phase to end. All you need is to get them to 0 health and leave them and they will be available for picking up during the last phase. I'm thinking that the cannon phase should be: focus on taking out one battery, pick it up and take out most of the remaining 3 with the shots. You would only need to dodge the arm at most once during this phase so you should probably be ignoring it and focus on the batteries only.

Also about your UMA news path. If I read this correctly you only need up to issue #8 for the Tin can. Getting the two issues from the steam room cost you quite some extra time since the incinerator path would be faster both going to and from the workshop. Since you can't use the tin can until you have your buried treasure from the monastery, you are probably better off getting those two issues elsewhere. Looking at your UMA news guide it seems you are passing by atleast 8 other stands on your route before the monastery. Unless I remember wrong and some of the are placed too much out of the way, you should be able to get 8 issues without any detours.
Fucking Weeaboo
The stand in the news room is one of the few that respawns that quickly.  I've watched where I can get stands - and the way I do it works best for a run.  I know that there is one more after I stop collecting them (in the monastery entrance) and one at Moogle Woods, which I would have used if I gone with a different plan and needed 10 UMA News (for Tea Leaves, used to get the Pearl Earrings).  Would getting either of those two save time over where I get them currently?  I don't think so.

BTW, when the UMA news stands appear depends on how far you're through the game.  So I can't get higher numbers until I'm further along in the story.
Exoray
Ah yea, that suggestion completely depends on the issues actually being there when you pass those areas. Will have to check it out next time I play through the game.

A timesaver for runaway train:
In the first cart you can trigger the alarm by bumping into the trolley sideways. You can't do it from the starting point, since the guy hiding in the corner will stop you before you are able to hit it. This means you'll have to move up abit and wait for the opportunity with the second trolley.
As a bonus from triggering this alarm, the card under the box scene will play out differently both letting you get past it quicker and preventing the cardplayer scene from triggering.
just( •_•)>⌐■-■ ..... (⌐■_■)wing it
running this game lately and got a 4:11:18 single segment.  looking over equipment it seems Pearl and Gold Ring are best to get but im thinking Pearl Earring may be useful to get.  They offer 1 additional attack and a possibilty of +1 damage dealt.  Would need Ivory Object, Tea Leaves, and Fireworks though.  1 extra attack stat may help a ton with Jegran.  Any thoughts or alternatives?
Fucking Weeaboo
I've got my guide with me now. If we went with Pearl Earring, here's where we'd get the items, based upon what I'm reading.

Ivory Object - Find Locations include UMA News #14, Moogle Woods Station - in the trees, or saving pilgrims buried in the snowfields. Also a drop from Bloodbones, Legion, and from King Behemoth Horns (this last one is definitely not an option).
Tea Leaves - Find locations include UMA News #10. Yeah, that's apparently it. Other than that, you have to fight Bloomers (the guide says in one place that Tonberry Queens have them and in their bestiary it doesn't list it).
Fireworks -  The only chest that has one is in the upper caves of the mountains that rim the Snowfields (looking at the map, it's in the large center snow fields, between the cave and bridge in the upper left side). Dropped by Bombs, Cluster, Pineapple, Clayore, King Behemoth, and Tallow. The Bombs/Claymores are medium rare drops on their list. Tallows are only droppable if their have their wicks lit.
just( •_•)>⌐■-■ ..... (⌐■_■)wing it
so fireworks are the bad part eh.  that extra attack would be very useful though.  how far out of way would fireworks be?
