I'd have to play it to test that. You do go through that area though on the way to the monastery though.

hmm well UMA news stands aren't gonona cost much time (if any) but fireworks would be problem.  i think if it takes more than 15 seconds it'd be a waste of time
just( •_•)>⌐■-■ ..... (⌐■_■)wing it
thinking a bit and realized that amulet is unneeded.  it gives +1 defense but that's useless since you won't get damaged enough (and hell it's early on anyways).  I think instead of a defense gain maybe possibly getting a glass earring (+1 attack) or glass ring (+1 focus).

Glass Ring:

Cool specs (next to Cid)
Yo-yo (UMA News 3)
Four-Leaf Clover ?

Glass Earring:

Nut (next to Cid)
Bottlecap ?
Leatherworks ?

don't know how much extra it'd cost but if needed there's way of gaining that money back with minimal time lose (i get chest next to king bahamut).  dunno but excluding money route would this be good idea?  it'd easily speedup samurai goblin fight and blaze a bit (more so attack than focus maybe)
Fucking Weeaboo
Well, you're suppose to get a bottlecap with UMA #1. Leatherwork is in a chest in the Eastern Wildlands, but you have to trick the wild ox to smash open the passageway (This is in the area with 2 skeletons/3 hounds on the right side). As for four leaf clovers, the first one you can get is from the treasure hunts (#1, at the old lett aqueduct), else you have to fight bloomers (forgotten forest campaign and silent spring campaign) or malboros. It says it's in random-stock shops for 100 gil.

The reason why I went with Amulet is that you're forced to build something to leave and there's no way to get everything to build something else, except maybe the glass earring. I don't know how much time would be lost to get that leatherwork though. Killerhounds do drop them though (2nd most common drop), so segmented runs could depend on luck for drops. SS runs I don't know if you'd wanna attempt luck drop, so you'd have to beat the campaign though in order to get the oxen to appear to get the one in the chest.

hmm didn't know he forced you to build something.  i just always got amulet anyways but really i was looking at equipement that could be possibly gotten prior to blaze.  if these 2 don't seem fit any others that seem right?  (i think attack is worth getting tbh)

edit:  where can a prism be found.  if so bronze earrings can substitute gold earring and they have possibility of +1 damage.  Bottle cap, spice, prism is needed.  +2 attack woudl be very useful

edit: there's a leatherwork in the selkie guild next to save point so that's not even out of way and extra attack will be useful

Problem is, you're forced to build before you get to the guild. You're not getting spice unless a shop has it (240 gil). Prisms are way too spendy (1200 gil) and getting one from a drop before the forced build won't happen either.

Edit: Unless you're talking an additional build, which there is a prism in a chest after the rapids ride (after you leave the falls). There's a 2nd in the water at Costa Faguita, but you'd have to swim out there and that would be a time waste.

yeah im thinking build amulet after meeting cid for first time and building glass earring just before boarding train to new leaf station.  that's all i can see able to happen

This will help when I get back to running it. Thanks.

I should scan in my strategy guide at some point to have a digital copy of it. That way if there's something obvious I'm missing, somebody else could see it.

v4 WIP. Will update with times and notes and such as I go along:

Segment 01 - 0:13:56 (-0:09 Segment, -0:09 Overall)
Segment 02 - 0:37:35 (-0:14 Segment, -0:23 Overall). Did skip the chest in the Crystal Chamber like zewing did in his SS run. Chasing Mia sucks. 591 Gil.
Segment 03 - 0:39:18 (-1:29 Segment, -1:43 Overall). Did skip the fight in the wildlands, so down 1 HP. 592 Gil.
Segment 04 - 0:44:41 (-0:02 Segment, -1:45 Overall). 552 Gil.
Segment 05 - 0:49:55 (-0:05 Segment, -1:55 Overall). 553 Gil.
Segment 06 - 1:05:44 (-0:11 Segment, -2:06 Overall). 553 Gil.
Segment 07 - 1:09:25 (-0:03 Segment, -2:09 Overall). 553 Gil.
Segment 08 - 1:19:42 (-0:46 Segment, -2:55 Overall). 653 Gil. Failed the Butt Bumping game, it allows you to continue w/ a different cutscene.
Segment 09 - 1:30:19 (-1:05 Segment, -4:00 Overall). 653 Gil. New way to handle the train sequence, Car 1 is zewing's strat, Car 5 is my new strat.
Segment 10 - 1:38:23 (-0:02 Segment, -4:02 Overall). 698 Gil.
Segment 11 - 1:46:01 (-0:24 Segment, -4:26 Overall). 700 Gil. See note 2.
Segment 12 - 1:53:25 (-0:08 Segment, -4:34 Overall). 700 Gil.
Segment 13 - 1:57:13 (+0:24 Segment, -4:10 Overall). 1414 Gil. See Note 3.
Segment 14 - 2:02:46 (-0:11 Segment, -4:21 Overall). 1414 Gil. This segment sucks for all its chest/Yuke juggling.
Segment 15 - 2:28:56 (-0:08 Segment, -4:29 Overall). 1414 Gil. Good Blaze fight and Black Chocobo section, bad Behemoth section.
Segment 16 - 2:39:12 (-0:43 Segment, -5:12 Overall). All items bought, skipped the Myrrh Fragment. 318 Gil left over.
Segment 17 - 2:55:00 (-0:10 Segment, -5:22 Overall).
Segment 18 - 3:20:21 (-1:09 Segment, -6:31 Overall).
Segment 19 - 3:34:33 (-0:15 Segment, -6:46 Overall).
Segment 20 - 4:05:31 (-0:38 Segment, -7:24 Overall).
Total Time - 4:05:31 (-7:24 Overall).

Note on Segment 08: Did a test where I failed the butt bumping mini-game. The game does allow you to fail and continue on and plays a different cutscene. The difference was exactly 100 frames - where losing was slower. But the time gained by letting her fail quickly instead of trying to wait for an opportunity to win could be faster in the end. The trick would be "helping" her fail.

Note 2: Can't believe it took me 3.5 years to figure out about/how to use the incinerator door moooh mentioned. I wonder if I can use it going the other direction to save more time? Also, can use this in Segments 3 and 5 to save time too (5 for certain since that's leaving Cid's shop. I must need to make sure I have enough UMA news articles. I'm at 7 with my current run.

Note 3: Segment 13 is a loss because I read UMA News 4 and 8 (this was in Segment 14 before) plus I went and got an extra chest to have enough Gil for later. The fight against the Samurai Goblin was fucking amazing.
just( •_•)>⌐■-■ ..... (⌐■_■)wing it
if you happen to use the glass earring i mentioned it would be worth it if you reset when crafting it until you had the augment that didn't make u slip on ice.  would save a couple seconds en route to monestary and the extra attack may speed up samurai goblin and blaze fight

Segment 12 - 1:51:15 (-0:01 Segment, -2:10 Overall).
Segment 13 - 1:54:01 (-1:02 Segment, -3:12 Overall). 1012 Gil. Didn't read UMA news since I only have 7. Skipped Samurai Goblin and the high cliff chest.
Segment 14 - 1:59:25 (-0:09 Segment, -3:21 Overall). I hate this segment.
Segment 15 - 2:25:22 (-0:13 Segment, -3:34 Overall). Pretty much a perfect Blaze fight and amazing Chocobo chase sequence. Fuck Behemoth chase though.
Segment 16 - 2:35:22 (-0:16 Segment, -3:50 Overall). Got UMA News 8, read them. Did not build, saving that for Segment 18 start. Chime appeared, so have 1115 Gil!
Segment 17 - 2:50:19 (-0:51 Segment, -4:41 Overall). Improvement is due to change in save point. Moved to Grassland Station, so I can save scumm for Hope Pearl in Seg 18.
Segment 18 - 3:16:30 (+1:10 Segment, -3:31 Overall). Time loss due to builds and extra travel.
Segment 19 - 3:31:03 (+0:01 Segment, -3:30 Overall).
Segment 20 - 4:01:50 (-0:11 Segment, -3:41 Overall, -11:05 over the SDA Run!)
Total Time - 4:01:50!!

zewing brought up the idea for a NG+ run. It just so happened that I have a chart calculating every possible combination of amulet, earring, and ring to figure out the best values. There's 4608 combinations (yikes!), but thankfully a program helped me spit out all the combinations, making sure to limit to 5 points in the stats. Let's look over all 5 stats and figure out what we need, since a full 25 points (5 points x 5 stats) is not possible with any combination.

Attack: Absolutely MUST be 5 points. Rank #1
Defense: Not necessary, but good as a backup. Rank #4
Focus: This determines how fast we lock onto things. Pretty important. Rank #2 (Tied)
Range: This determines how far away things can be and we still grab. Pretty important. Rank #2 (Tied)
Luck: Absolutely has no bearing onto a NG+ run, since we don't need drops. Rank #5

So I started sorting my chart so start with 5 Attack. This cut me down to 441.
I next looked at Range and Focus together. While there are 5 to either one, there aren't any combos that have them together. With 5 Range, the highest Focus is 3. With 5 Focus, the highest Range is 2. There are some 4 and 4 combos though.

So removing everything else out and leaving just those two, I picked out the best Defense, which was a 3. I didn't bother with Luck at all.

So we're left with 5 combinations, mostly combining the same few items.

Ankh+Orichalcum Earrings+Gloves
Ankh+Ankh Earrings+Ankh Ring
Carbide Plate+Orichalcum Earrings+Ankh Ring
Ankh+Orichalcum Earrings+Orichalcum Ring
Ankh+Orichalcum Earrings+Force Ring

The last one is the one that is the 3 Focus / 5 Range combo. The other 4 are 4 Focus / 4 Range. So next is to focus on their secondary abilities to determine what to use.

Ankh: Heart Recovery x3 or Cursor Area x3
Carbide Plate: Damage Taken -1 or Damage Dealt +1

Orichalcum Earrings: 1 Live/5 sec or Rolling deals damage
Ankh Earrings: Double gil drops or Auto-Recover

Gloves: Resist knockdown or Resist flinching
Ankh Ring: Time Extend (Large) or Capture Time x2
Orichalcum Ring: Rolling deals damage or Damage Nullify 15%
Force Ring: 1 Life / 2 sec. or Heart Recovery x4

Damage Dealt +1 is a definite bonus in our favor. The rest have nothing too important from a run. Since there's only one combo with a Carbide Plate, this is our winning combo.

Carbide Plate+Orichalcum Earrings+Ankh Ring / 5, 3, 4, 4, 2 = 18 Points
Variations Wanted: Scarletite Plate (A must), Dorje Earrings (Not necessary, Rolling does damage), Solomon's Ring (Not necessary, Capture Time x2)

As for Myrrh Heart Fragments, we probably want some, but given we'll be really powerful, I doubt we need them all. Get some as a buffer to prevent too many run failures due to death, but that's about it.

It'll be interesting to see how fast fights go with this combination of accessories.

Items Needed for Accessories:
Carbide Plate: Ornamental Plant, Board Game, Artwork
Orichalcum Earrings: Ivory Object, Artwork, Cosmetics
Ankh Ring: Board Game, Keepsake, Monster Buffet

I don't have my guide with me to figure out what drops what where else to get the items. I'll have to figure that out later.

Edit: I looked over my guide. This is totally going to be NOT fun, since most of what's needed is rare random drops. Yay.

Artwork - Capture Prisoner (Cid's Workshop Area). Dropped by Trickface, Claytaur, Sand Shark
Board Game - UMA News #15 and Random Shops, Dropped by Death Machine, Bomb, Claymore
Cosmetics - Dropped by Tallow (Best), Flan Princess
Ivory Object - UMA News #14
Keepsake - UMA News #11. Dropped by Gashadokuro, Legion, Lost Emperor (Golem Form), Tonberry, Tonberry Amok, Tonberry Queen
Monster Buffet - Dropped by Coeurl, Fenrir Wolf, Behemoth, Hydra, Cluster
Ornamental Plant - Treasure Hunt #9. Cherry Checkpoint Shop 1800 Gil

Random shops are suppose to sell anything you've acquired at least once, so I should just need one Artwork drop and I shouldn't need to depend on a drop for Board Game. The Cosmetics is the most common drop from Tallow, but that's about it. Everything else was very high. So I'll probably have to build or buy something with very high luck to get this plan to work.

The guide also says you won't build the same accessory twice, so even if I don't get my particular build, I can just rebuy the stuff in the random shop and try again. Or save scumm. Tongue

Yay for NG+ planning.

Edit 2: The GameFAQ Materials Location FAQ lists Artwork with "Capture prisoner (Cid's Workshop area)". It also says Keepsake is available during the Demon Wall sequence from one of the chests if you can get the doors to open.

Edit 3: Ivory Object and Ornamental Plant are going to be easier to find. Now I only need 2 items from drops.
just( •_•)>⌐■-■ ..... (⌐■_■)wing it
nice. another thing to mention, but NG+ has an opening cutscene that NG doesn't.  However, I timed the very first ship sequence to be at LEAST 30 seconds faster when on 15 setting.  This is definitely gonna be interesting, but the hardest part of this is simply getting the items equipped to make a NG+ run ;;

Just a small note, but I'm going through the game and looking for oddities and glitches.  I doubt there's any in the game, but it'd be fun.
Fucking Weeaboo
I put together a spreadsheet of all the materials that I can easily acquire. By this definition, I mean I can get it out of battle. So I started looking though the following:

UMA News
Chests
Treasure Hunts
Non-Random Shops
Misc. (Not Demon Door)

Via this collection, I covered 38 of the 50 materials. So I took the remaining 12 and needed to figure out what accessories used these materials. I found 4 amulets, 4 earrings, and 5 rings that used one of these 12 materials. I tweaked my program to not output any permutation that had one of these accessories. There's 1848 configurations that didn't.

From here, we need a different setup than the NG+ run. We need luck to get the accessories we need.

Attack: We don't want the battles to drag on forever, so this needs to be as high as possible. Rank #2
Defense: Not necessary, but good as a backup. Rank #5
Focus: This determines how fast we lock onto things. Pretty important. Rank #3 (Tied)
Range: This determines how far away things can be and we still grab. Pretty important. Rank #3 (Tied)
Luck: Must be 5 points, because we need luck for drops. Rank #1

Already we have a problem, because everything with 5 points in luck has HORRIBLE stats in everything else. All of them have just 1 or 2 points in attack. So let's figure out the best combo that provides high stats in both. So I started by cutting out 0-2 luck (for obvious reasons) and removed the 5 luck (because no good attack), which cut me down to 525 permutations. Sorting by our next most needed stat, attack, and cutting out 0-2 ATK stat combos cut us down now to 138. And then I focused on focus (FOCUS INCEPTION) and removed anything there with 0-2 stats, chopping the list down to 57. I sorted by total points to get the best combination for what I need.

The 4 best overall combos are:
Carbide Plate+Diamond Earrings+Diamond Ring, 3, 4, 4, 3, 4 = 18
Carbide Plate+Diamond Earrings+Emerald Ring, 4, 3, 4, 3, 3 = 17
Carbide Plate+Ruby Earrings+Diamond Ring, 4, 3, 3, 3, 4 = 17
Carbide Plate+Emerald Earrings+Diamond Ring, 3, 4, 3, 3, 4 = 17

Between these 4, going with the Carbide Plate+Ruby Earrings+Diamond Ring is probably the best bet, with 4 in both Attack and Luck, while maintaining decent stats in the rest.

Interesting enough, Carbide Plate is also on our list of things for NG+. So yay!

Materials Needed and where:
Carbide Plate (600 gil)
-----
Ornamental Plant - Treasure Hunt #9
Board Game - UMA News #15
Artwork - Capture Prisoner (Cid's Workshop Area)

Ruby Earrings (520 gil)
-----
Ivory Object - UMA News #14
Fireworks - Snow Fields (Non-Battle Phase Required)
Artwork - Capture Prisoner (Cid's Workshop Area)

Diamond Ring (768 gil)
-----
Rainbow Wine - Moogle Woods (Treetop Level)
Board Game - UMA News #15
Keepsake - UMA News #11

Since we have a couple of duplicates, we can buy them from the random item shops after we've acquired them once. Artwork is 3000 gil, Board Game is 900.

Whelp, work is needed to be done. Time to get crackin'.

Sub 4 should be a possiblity now lol.  Oh yeah, for timing, just take timer after final save and subtract from time on continued file.  Self explanatory, but yeah...just so we know.

Also...no money route, lots of health, OP as heck, really can't wait to see how low you can go.

I stumbled across a couple of small improvement for NG. You do NOT need to complete the build with Cid. You just need to talk to him and then back out. This cuts out 40 gil and probably the need to pick up the 3 chests. I also found out you can just throw barrels at Goldenrod at the Winery instead of trying to throw her. This should make attempts much easier.

Edit 1: I also found found that you can warp to the Selkie Guild, so after the Selkies are taken to Aerial Prison, it's most likely going to be faster to go back into the Queen's Garden, then use the warp there to go straight to the Selkie Guild instead of taking the train to Costa Faguita. I think this is what was referrenced before in this thread and the verification thread but I never quite understood. I'm not sure if there are any other places that would make for good warp spots.

Edit 2: The warp point in Prison Sands is close to where you are after Aerial Prison. You can warp to Lett Highlands, which dumps you in between the two bridges (where the normal battle zone is) and it's a hop skip and a jump to the 2nd resurrection.
just( •_•)>⌐■-■ ..... (⌐■_■)wing it
interesting, the less movement the better lol.  Also I always thought you had to build stuff from cid, but if it's just talking then that'll make early game about 10 seconds faster or so?  idk

NG+ segmented runs are underway! I'll be putting things into a Google Doc Spreadsheet which will help me calculate segment time too, since it isn't as straight forward as NG.
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1mil4TY7h9JiRoYfZDcqUDXffmnNK8t3qQ-giQN_fEWs/

Notable speed differences between NG and NG+ (will be editing as I go along).

New extra cutscene added at the start in NG+.
Can change speed of the Alexis II (default is 10, max is 15).
Goblin fight doesn't tell you to close the Miasma stream (you can just go straight into doing it).
No tutorial movement messages in Victory Monument (minimal time difference here).
Game doesn't do its building tutorial with Cid. Talk once and then the poster will appear on the door (from what it looked like).
The first part of the Bahamut fight has a timer (the game does keep track of it normally but never displays the timer on first runs of NG). Not a time difference, but an interesting note.
Added scene in the train sequence. The note to Jegran is read. It's apparently from Belle. (This explains the 10 million gil comment in the monastery.)
The dance does NOT start you with the starting default Lilty Waltz. If you did 1 waltz on the first playthrough, you start on the 2nd version on NG+. Again, not a time difference, but a change I wasn't expecting.
Fucking Weeaboo
NG+ Segmented v1 is done. I fucked up the final fight with Jegran, but at there's still other improvable spots, plus I need to change some segmenting stuff.

Seg NG+ v1 time: 3:56:43

In testing out the new warp uses, NG is going to be changed into an ugly mess at the end. Since I won't be taking the trains in Segment 18 (either one), that means I'm not going to be able to use that building spot. The other other one I go by after I have everything is in Moogle Woods Station, after leaving Yuke Sky City. It also means I'm not going to the Grassland Station Save Point before and after the Aerial Prison segment. So I'm going to have to change the segment structure, since using autosaves is an awful decision.

Segment 15 will save at Moogle Woods Station instead of Yuke Sky City.
Segment 16 will save at Clock Plaza, as usual.
Segment 17 will go through the dance, the Aerial Prison segment, and the 2nd resurrection and save at Clock Plaza, which was the save point after Segment 19.
Segment 18 will do what Segment 20 did.

Segment numbers listed above assumes I don't combine a couple of earlier segments, since I have a little less precision to worry about during the 1st visit with Cid, since I don't have to build. I may combine what was Segments 3-5 there too (I did this in my NG+ run).

Possible sub-4 NG Segmented hype?

Fucking Weeaboo
SUB 4. IT HAS HAPPENED. IT IS REAL.

There's still room for improvements from the Blaze fight segments on. But the fact that I managed to crack the 4 hour mark is awesome. Cheesy
