Whats up guys, new to speeddemosarchive.com and about to start my very first speedrunning experience! Loved this game and was really glad to finally find people that speedrun it aswell :).

Will share whatever I find after I clean up my own route and actually hit vellenge!

A question though, when do you guys start the timer? once you start the gamecube or once you click singleplayer?

GL with your runs!

edit; as I've noticed you guys also find the lack of proper maps annoying for routing, so I will most likely in the near future work on providing clean maps! (or atleast, as clean as I can)
www.twitch.tv/ghoul02
Welcome. Smiley I'm relatively new too.

I'd highly recommend looking at the notes posted earlier in here; they should save you some time on routing the game. I did make a few of my own maps, which, while about as bare bones as it gets, do the job well enough for me. The maps are also pretty easy to memorize, since you run the same path each time.

I start the timer the moment I click Single Player. The reset timing is pretty much Japanese runners for platformers only; I don't know of any other place it gets used. Wasshu, who has the WR starts it on a new game, so just time it from there. You working on a Single Segment or a Segmented run?

If you have any questions, feel free to ask. Also, if you have streaming equipment, I'm still looking for people to race, plus I'd like to see another person's take on the game.

I'm working on single segment, but currently just trying maps over and over again to memorize what drops where (even with the rng) and trying not to forget swapping my element before entering a miasma stream.

Already made a compilation of the earlier posted notes aswell, as I've not yet had any troubles with crafting new weapons (because I haven't reached that point in my runs yet) so have yet to hit year 3 without any major slumps.

And to further answer your question, although I have xplit (although I have no clue on how to stream my tv screen as I'm using a gamecube) and everything set up, my internet is really too slow for a stream. Although I'll soon be moving out of the house and into my own student dorm room (with hopefully a ton of internets). I'd love to see someone else playing it as well and just to race against.

Went from running Lilty to clavat yesterday tho, so still checking out how that goes (as far as I can tell, grabbing holy and killing the crab on year 1 goes really fast, and digging the defend more then I thought I would).

Edit: whats even cooler is that I have yet to fully complete the game which means I haven't seen the ending cinematic yet so once I do finish my very first run I'll be in for a treat.
Edit2: I was also wondering if there are any abusable glitches I should be aware of that would benefit me in singleplayer.
According to SDA timing, timing starts when you gain control of your character (ie, not when starting the game or the console) and stops when you lose control of your character.
www.twitch.tv/ghoul02
Timing for character is a little tough though. It's not a clean game for that. The first player control is still text... Then you do character creation... My opinion: time it from the beginning of the cinematic and let SDA eventually sort out how long the run is. It's the easiest for the runner, as well as being how I and Wasshu timed our runs, so it should give you the easiest comparisons.

Take notes on the drops. Have a spreadsheet or word doc. The RNG isn't huge in the game for drops; if they drop it once, they usually drop it or something similar again. Miasma streams are stuff I forget as well. I think I'll just put them in the splits so I always look at them.

You're going to need a capture card to stream. If you don't have one, no big deal, although if you start running seriously, you're going to want one so that you can record how awesome your time is.

Lilty is definitely not the fastest in my testing. Plus the Meteor Parasite is damn near impossible with them (sadly). I need to run a Clavat test, but a frame check on her attacks is the big thing there. It's about 2 seconds for Selkies to either use an FC or a three combo. If a Clavat is indeed faster there, as DonDon suspects.

There is exactly one glitch for the game I know of, and it's not usable in Single Player. You can skip straight to one of the bosses in 4P mode by jumping a wall, but clearly not important here.

I've mostly memorized the maps anyway, considering that you don't really need to know much about them... But I'm also rusty by now. Mt. Vellenge is a great place for a map in order to avoid the dark crystals.

For RBP in year 1, a Clavat run that I saw on nicovideo just uses Fire instead of Holy. Giant Crab's resistance to fire is poor, and unless you can justify picking up Life, Fire should be a couple of seconds faster in total.

Will try out fire, just got my gamecube back and ready to speedrun some more and finish my year 4 routing!

Got a 8:51 on River Belle Path yesterday, I will never see such a good run start ever again Cry

(ps, link the clavat run on nicovideo^^, I need to learn me some japs if I ever get the time, a lot of time)

It's not finished, unfortunately, but the guy does a pretty good job and it should be helpful. If you need help with deciphering his toolkit on the side, it says "Attack," "Defense," "Magic," "Command slots." He does have some pretty extensive comments throughout, which I can more or less understand, but you might have some trouble.
www.twitch.tv/ghoul02
If holy does more damage, you have to kill the goblin with the key. He drops life anyway, so that may be frames lost at most.

I should watch bits of that run though. I'm really not good on some of the earlier levels...

dondon151: 2013-08-02 07:40:10 pm
Yeah, I forgot whether you kind of get Life for "free" or not. You have to go into the command menu to fuse the magicite IIRC, but if Holy does more damage and takes the same amount of time to cast as Fire, then use Holy by all means (actually, you should time both options). This resource that I use (http://shrines.rpgclassics.com/gc/ffcc/) is somewhat thorough with information, although it's missing some important things, like how much defense bosses have and stuff. It lists the Giant Crab's fire resistance as 1 and holy resistance as 0.
What's up! I just found out about this thread and it's so cool to see that people are actually running this game, I only just started speedrunning and I'm not very good at it!

I only need to finish up practicing the final boss and I think I'll be ready for a full run!

Hope we can do some races or something in the future! would be awesome Cheesy

Good luck with the runs, hope I can find some cool new tricks to share with you all!

More people joining in! Awesome!

By the way, try to break the game^^! There has to be something that can be broken!
After messing around at the goblin wall boss area I realized you can "walk" on your chalice if you run over it down a slope, granting you a few moments of levitation. this way I was able to walk from my chalice up to the keyslots at the goblin wall, but was unable to move into the boss area.

Will continue to spend time trying to break the game while I finish my routing, entering year 5 at about 2:00.

btw who is Wusshu?
I've no idea actually xD

Also, do you happen to know if Selkies take any damage during dash focus ? if they don't I might switch and try running that instead, since their Master's Weapon is dash and that would be great for final boss!
When playing on my clavat, I get interrupted when I use my charges/movement-based focus attacks, so I guess it does, but you should check it because that would make combat easier in clutch moments.
Wow playing as a Selkie is a real pain when it comes to boss fights, maybe I'm just bad ... but as Lility I could clear bosses without taking a single hit, including parasite ...

I'm pretty sure it's because I suck ... xD
www.twitch.tv/ghoul02
Cora; glad to see the game is suddenly picking up. Cheesy
I'm in the middle of moving now, but racing sounds awesome anytime. Just shoot me a PM. Smiley

Wasshu is a Japanese runner. I'm using his notes a lot, since most of his strats are far more optimized than mine. I can worry about further optimizations after I start doing consistently better.

I play Selkie now Corawr, and it's a lot better. Although what's your strat vs Meteor Parasite? I was getting destroyed there when I first started running as a Lilty. I can actually beat him as a Selkie. Phase 3 is the only issue, but it's a doozy.

Check http://shrines.rpgclassics.com/gc/ffcc/focusattack.shtml if focus attacks with certain weapons can be interrupted. Selkies can get interrupted while charging with both the Dual Shooter and Butterfly Head FAs.

I, too, am curious about your MP strats if you thought they were easy as Lilty.
I'm not that very good at explaining stuff, since my english kinda sucks, but I guess I could just show you on stream later when I start practicing there.

So how do you guys handle Raem? I'm having a horrible time on him with 53 str and 50 def clavat, got the rune blade for a ranged attack.
Parasite took long but it worked out pretty well in the end, most likely because of mistakes/not used to it yet.

Edit: swapped to using the steel blade for flinching, lets see if it works Smiley
Edit2: Trying out icestrike, the freeze really seems to help.

+ Ghoul02 upload a vod already on youtube or something :D! (would love to see you tackle mount vellenge and raem)

Raem has a blind spot where he'll try to keep on jabbing you with his beak when you're just outside of his range.

Also, if you're not aware, MP form 1 has a couple of blind spots where MP can't hit you and the tentacles either can't hit you or won't attack you, and MP form 2 has a blind alley between the two mounds where the tentacles won't attack you. I haven't figured out any tricks for MP form 3, and that's what gives Ghoul02 the hardest time.
Edit history:
Michel: 2013-08-04 03:49:23 am
What I did for MP form 3 was to stay in the middle, wait for him to fire his lasers and place the spell on the ground and then move a little bit forward and do a charge shot, after the charge shot I move back again. If you're positioned in dead center and a bit away from the boss the tentacles wont attack you, and if you're hitting the bottom border the laser wont hit you either. You can easily dance between the laser and spell in the middle.

Red = lasersafe
Black box = dance area
Blue circles = vines
purple circle = boss

Where about is this blind spot for raem? do you use a visual cue?
Edit history:
dondon151: 2013-08-04 04:02:58 am
How fast is that strategy? Also, I'm a little confused by what you're calling the attacks. Are the lasers his gatling gun attack (which can hit you multiple times) and the spell on the ground that meteor/explosion attack?

I'm not sure if there's a good visual cue for Raem's blind spot, but if you look at wasshu's notes, go to Year 5 (5年目) and scroll down until you see a screenshot of his character positioned facing Raem. That should be where his blind spot is.

Yea the lasers are his gatling gun attack and the spell on the ground is the explosion. The strategy is bearable, but its most likely faster then dying and chugging phoenix downs the entire time.
It lasts about 2 cycles and it takes about 40sec/cycle I'd say if done perfectly.
This was something I came up with on the fly and it worked out fine for me.

Also, on the Raem fight, if you walk backwards really quickly and hug the border, it seems Raem won't target his ability on you just yet, until you step forward. This gives you a nice first-hit on the adds without flying balls everywhere.

edit: does the current blind spot position on the Raem fight skip the adds aswell? because I just found a spot that makes the adds ignore you and he keeps spamming that body slam on you.
And it worked, but then lasers happened and I got 1shot Sad but apparently you can just move forward to the boss and then dodge the laser
A question, which map are you doing to get the mythril you need for armour and Master's weapon ? if you do of course ... I know River belle c2 is kind of a pain to farm because those Griffins are quite tough.

I was farming Mushroom forest before but I had such mega bad luck, I was stuck there for a extra 20 minutes with just one mythril drop and two designs ...

I hope for the mythril armour recipe from Tida C1, else I'll buy it, I get the first Mythril from Mushroom Forest C2 (I skip River Belle Path til year 4 and get it there from the gryphon for the masters weapon) and craft the mythril armor at marrs pass right after mushroom forest. Because its an odd year, I can also buy the mythril armour design if it did not drop, and sell various goods.

Edit: the final green plant just before the entrance has a 100% chance to drop Mythril I believe, and I just get backup gold from various places to buy designs that I need.

I only farm for 1 mythril at year 5 if I didn't get lucky on drops at daemons court (as they can drop either iron or mythril) and craft the mithril shield on year 5 when I pass Marrs Pass when going to veo le sluice after getting the unknown element.

You can check out links to all my notes on my profile Smiley

edit2: Finally got Raem :< ohgod that blindspot from Wasshu is awesome! I just ran up to the boss and got it perfectly :), didn't even have to bother with the adds. great stuff
edit3: My notes near year 4-5 start getting a bit loosely, thats mostly because I'll improvise a bit to get the items I need/should've gotten.
