Changes from the SNES to the GBA version:

GBA is based upon Hard Type, SNES on Easy Type.

Improved graphics and sound.

Greatly improved translation, including on bosses and some enemies.

Changable characters for the final fight!

New 8 floor dungeon at Mt. Ordeals, containing new powerful weapons for the characters now used in the final fight.  Each is protected by a boss and must be defeated with a party containing the character the box corresponds to.

New dungeon that contains special sections for each character - 9 doors (Palom and Porom share a door).  Each contain a side storyline related to the character.  To unlock the door, they have to have been in the party that defeats Zeromus and the character must be in the party to go through the door.

Even though I own the SNES version, the Hard Type SFC version, and a copy of Chronicles, it's STILL worth getting the GBA version, mainly for the improved translation.

And yes, the "You Spoony Bard!" line is still in!

cause i already own the snes cartige :o, i dont want to buy it if its the same game ...
everybody wanna tell you the meaning of music
Perhaps you should have went to gamefaqs. That's where I found a list of changes myself.

It's based on hard type but they made it much easier, to the point where it's easier than the original. I've heard stories about Mist Dragon only being able to move once before dying and so on.

Of course "You spoony bard!" is still in. It's a cult classic. Although I personally like

My personal opinion, having played FF2 SNES, FF4 SFC, the fan translation, and some of Chronicles to see what it was like, is that the best idea would be for you to play a new game entirely. If you really want to play FF2/4 again, then yes, go for the GBA rerelease to make it more interesting. If you just want a nostalgia fix, watch my upcoming, completed FF2 run. Wink

ok cool, i will sale my snes cartige and buy the gba one :o, an dpaly it on my gamecube Tongue
May the way of the Hero lead to the Triforce
Nononono, don't sell your FF2 cart. It's somewhat of a collectible.
everybody wanna tell you the meaning of music
Not only should you not sell your FF2 cart because of value, it's probably also a better play due to the wack difficulty and enemy speed. I recommended the GBA version because it's new and there's no sense in replaying the SNES version.
bah anyway mostly in the begin of next year i will sale most of my game since i dotn really play them an di dont wanna have a game collection Tongue

ff2, ff3, zelda gc colelction, ikaruga, ( i think chrono trigger), gradius galaxy, ff 1&2 gba

will all be on sale soon

Why sell...When you can give them to me?  If you have to get them out of your hands I'll just send you my FFIVA cart in return.
Fucking Weeaboo
Don't listen to him.  I'll take a few off your hands.  Free would be nice, but if you want a few bucks in exchange, I can do that.  FF1&2 Dawn of Souls I would love to have, FF III (SNES), and Zelda GC Collection.

Novice Speedwalker
... I notice nobody's posted any negatives regarding the game. Some minor things I've noticed so far:

Sound is slightly off. Still good... but doesn't sound quite right compared to what I remember from the SNES version.

There's some slowdown in battles. Also a small bug where characters go twice in succession or out of order... kind of annoying.

Still, it's a quality port and worth the purchase. I haven't gotten to the bonus areas yet, but the new translation is definitely a big improvement.
not sending that for free...

did will go to ebay soon, im maybe doing that the 27...

i will post the link fo the item when i will do it.

You have to remember that this is different hardware.  Except it to sound a touch different.  Personally, I love it.

Everybody say that but I really don't notice it.  Chronicles on the other hand, OMFG.  As for the Characters going twice, I don't think that's a glitch.  It happened in the SNES version on occassion too, but it was less noticable.  Second chance shots...gotta love them.

"I like to watch"
It's ok.  Playing the game with battle speed 2 is more tolerable than the horribleness of playing it on 1.  It feels extremely broken on 1.  It lags when nothing is happening.

The sound is off, music is 'faithful' but still off.  Some glitches were taken out (just like in the Wonderswan Color version; which this is a port of).  Rods only hit 1 enemy (like the Fire/Ice/Thunder Rods) when used in battle.  Some minor differences are throughout the game.

On battle speed 2 it plays much better, but the SFAM version is still the best one to play through.  I wouldn't sell the SNES one if I were you.  Really all this version has for it is the new material at the end of the game, and if you've never had a portable FF4 then that would be something going for it too, I guess.  The bestiary is kind of cool though to see what badguys drop.  There's a lot of one-timers though (I think I can still get all of them on my first go-around though).

Better translation + 'You spoony bard' = no.

First half of the game with battle speed 1 I gave this game a 2/10.  After switching to battle speed 2, I give it a 6/10.  Maybe it'll go up to a 7 after I do more of the bonus stuff (just using Yang instead of Edge in the last place for now).
Definitive version this is not.  But the bonus stuff will hopefully make it a little more respectable.  I forgot why I only played through the Wonderswan Color version once, but now I remember while playing this one.

Sir VG, play the game with battle speed 1; you will notice the molasses in superglue battle "speed" very quickly as well as the multiple turns thing. I am playing the Japanese version, but I wouldn't think that the US version plays 'smoother' or 'rougher'.  It is a slower game than the SFAM/SNES/PS1 versions though.  Battles still take longer due to the slower animation speed, going through the item list is just as, if not slower than in the PS1 versions, and flying around is godawful slow.  It's just..laggy in playing speed.  Even the cursor lags.

I should know, this is my 7th version of the game (soon to be 8 when I pick up and keep the US GBA version unopened).
Fucking Weeaboo
No wonder I never saw it.  I've been playing with battle speed at default - 3.  I did notice lag on the flying of the Red Wings at the opening intro, but I guess it doesn't bother me as much.

I did notice a few bugs removed.  Most noticably the duplication bug and the "get the crystal without facing doom wall" bug (the later I've only been told, the former I've tried).

I'm still happy with it, even if it's not perfect.

It's still there in the lower speeds, but nowhere near as bad (as well as battle lag) as when you have it set to battle speed 1.

When you actually get the airship, it is very slow.  It probably takes about 8.5 seconds to go around the world in the Enterprise in the SNES version, almost 27 in the GBA version.

The game is just slower all-around. I tried the steal/equip glitch, but I think it was removed as well.  I was still using battle speed 1 at the time though, where it was frustrating to even try.  :-/

so - this game doesn't suffer the same complaint as "dawn of souls" where the difficulty is downgraded by glaring proportions?

From what I heard, it has been. And this is why I told the couple of people who wanted me to do a FF4 GBA run, no thanks.

This is why I don't play remakes, Working Designs excluded. And especially if it's by Square. Although I will probably get a PSP and the Valkyrie Profile remake (from the Enix part of Square Enix), because out of principle for my favorite game ever, I will need to show them monetary supplication.

Heh...I got FF4A for Christmas from one of my best friends.  I love her dearly for getting me this. ^^

I just spent a few days going through this one, and I have to agree the lag is god awful. I tend to play with all settings set to "hardest" which for this one entails Battle Speed 1 and Active mode...I never actually tried it with the speed any slower so if what Red said is true then I might consider turning it down a couple notches.

As for the bugs...it seems all the old ones were removed. The "Early Dark Crystal, Dupe Trick, and Equip (insert non-shield user here) with a shield after Edge steals it" are all gone.

As for the bonus material, it's OK I guess. It wasn't like "WOW" or anything, but some of the trials are cool I guess. The weapons they give you throughout the Lunar Ruins are rediculously overpowered IMO. I had Cecil(16x), Kain(16x), Edge(15x), and Cid(14x) all with 255 Attack, Yang with 17x 170 I think, Edward with 13x 180-something, and any one of the mages could have been brought up to snuff as well with the right gear.

Another thing I noticed is that they seem to have nerfed Kain's Jump, and the Berserk spell. It seems they changed it so the game takes players actions as precedence over AI controlled characters, so I'll end up with strings of turns before the enemy even gets it's second - or in the case of berserking my own guys (which worked EXTREMELY well in the PSone version) I would see my controlled characters get multiple turns before the berserked characters would even go...occasionally they wouldn't even get a turn before the fight ended. Jumping takes much too long to be effective half the time...most of my characters will get at least 2 turns before Kain Jumps/Lands, making it rather impractical.

As for difficulty, I found it to be a bit more diffidult than the SNES version, but MUCH easier than the PSone version. Zeromus was a pushover at mid-upper 50s (whereas he was a decent, and welcome challenge at that same level range in the PSone version).
