FFXII - New Run Complete!

Aaa you're doing a new run! I've been using your segmented run a lot for my pathetic XII-in-one-go attempts. I'll never be able to speedrun anything, but I love this game so much that even if I tire of it, it takes me about 3 weeks and I'm back at it again. X) Watching your run made me start thinking differently on a lot of things re: XII.

I remember you saying by the end of the video you were really tired of it and that a new attempt wouldn't be in the near future, but I'm happy you're giving it another go.

I found this thread because Freddeh's 6:53:31 run was ad'ed for on my channel sidebar. I love watching new runs - found the link to ema non's run next and now I feel like a proper idiot about my own runs XD but it's still a lot of fun. I always learn something new from watching you guys. I'll toss in a few examples:

* Before watching Youkai's run I had no idea the Koga/Iga Blade isn't mandatory. (loooool)
* Same with Ba'Gamnan LP farming - didn't know his minions could be respawned.
* I never even knew what Infuse did. Now I use it for crit/reflect all the time.
* This whole thing about 'preparing people then putting them back in your reserve' *facepalms*
* Same with manipulating animations and time by swapping weapons and using Aero/Aeroga, Attack while casting a spell etc. Didn't know about any of that.
* ++++ a ton of things I never considered (the only trick I really knew about was RNG and Immobilize)
* ema non's 'casting spell to have character stay put to save time backtracking' blew me away. XD So easy and obvious but it never even crossed my mind.
* Running around in the Royal Palace shouting for guards - doing the sigil after all 3 'hey bucket heads'.
* Freddeh made me aware that you don't really need a lot of gear for the first 20% of the game, as long as you're leveled (which Dustia will take care of).
* WHY did I always run down the mid section of the Ogir-Yensa map, when the bottom is clearly much faster?

...etc. So yeah, I'm aware of all of this because I found your first segmented run on YouTube, soooo... good luck and I'll be watching the final result Smiley

Hey Fangu. Thanks man. It's always nice to hear that your work is appreciated. Having said that I wouldn't really look at my run anymore. It's fairly outdated at this point. Hence I'm doing it again. Freddeh/Emannon are who you want to be watching now.

Also for everyone's information Emannon's desert route is 15 seconds faster than the one used in my current run.

Thanks Fangu! It's been fun to work on, and I'm not quite done yet! A lot of those are things I didn't know about even for a while after running lol.

I'll have to learn that desert route then Youkai >_>. Going to throw me off the first couple times I'd imagine.

Eh, it's not that hard Freddeh. Just watch the video and practice it a couple times. I think it's a less complex route so it probably won't screw you up too much.

tl;dr: I'm done with dustia; moving on. Also pick up drops from the start; waiting for higher chain levels is not beneficial with 50 or fewer kills.

Ok guys. After 432 attempts I think I'm pretty much done with Dustia. I'll just have to go with the shitty segment I have. For the last 30 attempts I did keep track of if I got a drop or not. I used beads and if I got a drop put a white bead in, if not a black bead. So this does not count if the drop is a staff, book, or both; neither does it count if I got multiple drops. Just if there was a loot bag. Below are the results of that as well as some calculations I did. These are based on the Uncommon and Rare drop rates since that is what Dustia has. Also it shoud be noted that my actuals are probably sightly higher than actual average due to me resetting at chain 20 if I was having bad drop luck.

As you can see my chain 2 and 3 samples are fairly small so I wouldn't be surprised if they were off by as much as 10% but the chain 0 and 1 actuals are significantly higher than theory suggests. Here are a couple tables that use some math to calculate estimated drop counts. These estimate how many drops you should have on average at specified chain numbers based on drop percentages. They assume a multiplier of 1.5 at 10+ and 2.5 at 26+ to account for the possibility of multiple drops. I have no idea if those numbers are correct but they seem to be in the right neighborhood based on the numbers lining up with what I would expect on average at various chain counts. The table also assumes you get a chain level every 15 kills. The L2 Start assumes you skip all drops until chain 15 where you achieve level 2 chain.

I've wanted to see an analysis based purely off game mechanics that would analyze how to go about Dustia chain levels, and Youkai's stuff fiinally made me break down and do it myself. My spreadsheet isn't the prettiest, I'm sure I made some things harder than they needed to be (I'm not a statistician Tongue

), and I didn't account for flashing chain numbers because holy crap that would be a bitch, but I did get some good numbers out of it. I won't be posting the sheet here - at least not yet - because I'd like to do some more with it.

Conclusions
Grabbing every drop no matter what: on average the worst approach
Waiting until you gain one chain level: the best approach; gives ~20% more on average than grabbing everything
Waiting until you get two chain levels: second worst; less than a 7% increase
Waiting for the highest chain level: surprisingly decent; about a 14% increase

Obviously had I done this sooner it would have likely spared Youkai a great deal of pain, frustration and boredom. My bad there. Sad

Alright guys. Got segment 7 done. I think it could be maybe 10 seconds faster with perfect luck. The judge fight wasn't as fast as I have gotten and a couple reflects hit a random mob on the judge but I still two-cycled it. Also I had a brain fart and forgot that when you open the cell there is a prompt so I lost 2 seconds there by being a dumbass. Still the good outweigh the bad by far on this segment. I got two Reflectga motes and Ashe has 92mp which is about as high as I have seen for her. That should help a lot on Raffalesia and on the Bahamut boss block both of which are places where MP runs low.

Now it's time to figure out where to use those two Reflectga motes.

My current plan is to use one on Gabranth 2 but I don't think that actually saves time, mostly for convenience. My first thought is Vossler would be a good place to use one. I can't remember if I have to direct cast one or two Aero but due to the direct cast you always end up waiting for that third Reflect to land before Delta-Attack starts. If I have one person throw the mote then I could start casting Aero basically immediately. What do you guys think about that idea?

What are other good places to use a Reflectga mote? I'm thinking places where there are 4 party members or wherever it would save the most time before Jellies since Ashe doesn't get Reflect until then which means I have to do 2 cycles of Reflect.

Other than that, Tiamat is an option because you shouldn't be casting any magicks in the fight, but that might mess up the tech/placement a bit. Probably worth playing around with at least, because it would up the chances of survival in your party (especially Balthier's).

Another good place might be somewhere in the Pharos, though that would come down to how long the setup takes for any bosses in question. Fenrir comes to mind because you need to reflect both Balthier and Reddas and I'm pretty sure that one could be sped up a little.

The Tyrant setup is ever so slightly awkward, too, so that's another place to try. Something like Thundara/Decoy/Protect followed by the mote once you get to the weird energy/mist/whatever-it-is path leading up to it because I think motes can affect characters that are pretty far apart (though that might just be my mind playing tricks on me).

Tyrant should be able to be done on the run without a mote with careful timing, since you only really need decoy for the first bit of the fight, so no real need there.

You honestly shouldn't need reflect on anyone but Vaan, and thats even easier to cast since Vaan can cast it himself (in SS route...not sure what setup you're using for segmented).

I'd say Garuda on the run, Vossler (though you'd have to test if that actually saves a round...), or before Vinuskar at Stillshrine are the best options.

I don't use Reflect at all against Tiamat in a segmented run so that is out. I'll have Mirror Mail and Ruby Rings once I get past Bergan so Pharos doesn't need it. Also Garuda won't work for this run. I'm going to need Ashe and Penelo to not have reflect for a magic damage down. I already have that damage down planned out, though maybe I can change it if there is a faster way with the Mote.

Vinuskar is an interesting idea. MP was an issue in the stillshrine for my mages and saving a reflect or two would help with that. I'll consider that one.

Oh right, you're using backwards-ass Emanon-esque strats for Garuda to try and save lp for jellies.

at vinuskar would make it a tad longer since you can't really cast decoy on the run (unless you're going to cast it outside and just run with vaan...which isn't a terrible idea actually...you can just do the immob after that second pedastal with fran running instead of basch since you should rarely actually get hit there if you're doing it right anyway), but the mana save is likely worth it.

Yeah the thing is I am only doing one round of jellies so it's critical that I get Golden Amulet ASAP for everyone. That means Ashe can't get Reflect or Dark until after jellies so she can get GA earlier.

EDIT: Also she doesn't have the LP for it anyway at the end of my LP spending on segment 7 she has 43 LP left.

Then I gain some time again. Still to be only ~2 minutes ahead at Belias either means your run is epic or mine is damn terrible.

I really wish I could have gotten a better Dustia 2. That will forever be the black mark on this run Sad

Oh well. I gain an automatic 15 minutes after jellies right? So that will help.

EDIT: After watching your Belias I see it wouldn't be anywhere close to 2 minutes ahead if you had better luck on him; I think it would be something like 20-30 seconds ahead. I don't get it; I thought I was doing good. I really don't want to have to go back and re-do that damn Dustia segment Sad

So this table looks a lot worse for me. It's either a testimate to: how beastly Freddeh is, how shitty I am, or how stupidly consistent the game is in general. As you can see I lost some time to Dustia 2. Not much I can do about that I certainly put in the effort to overcome that but it didn't happen. Then I spend a few segments gaining short amounts of time. I save a big chunk by only doing one round of Jellies to Freddeh's 2. The lost time for Mateus is due to me being a dumbass and forgetting a license at the end of the jelly segment so I went ahead and did some extra licensing which cost time.

Don't know what to speedrun :(

Well I finally finished the Sochen Cave segment. Damn that was brutal. Here are split comparisons up to Ahriman. I lost some time on the run to Phon Coast because I did some licensing and Freddeh doesn't. I'm still not sure why I lose so much time there though. My licensing is only 1:20 long and comparing against Freddeh's WR video I recover most of that on the run to the camp. Maybe freddeh hit the split early one time or something. That would account for how I gain 3 minutes between the camp and Mandys I think.

Anyway the short of it is I'm still slowly gaining time. Not nearly as fast as I'd like though Sad

On the other hand I'm absolutely destroying my old run so there is that.

Another segment down. Not perfect but there is a surprising amount of luck manipulation in this segment. I think the one I have is as good as can reasonably be gotten. At least that's what 70 attempts tells me. Here's the table though Daedalus:

Oh and for those that are curious in my previous run my save at the same place had a time of: 5:07:49. My current save time on the new run's file is: 4:32:12. So yeah crushing the old run by just over 35 minutes. Hopefully I can widen that gap by the end. I'm a little curious if that's possible though. I think the boss fights going forward will actually take longer than the previous run because I'm a couple levels lower so I lose a little damage. Wonder if it's enough to make a difference.

It will likely be a few seconds at most against any given boss, because you'd only be likely to lose a round of casts or so in damage, especially with the luck manipulation in segmented. Most of the additional Mag in the SS route is for consistency anyway and additional time saved against bosses is a bonus, which would likely be less than would be saved by a yolo route that did fewer Jellies/Dustias (note to anyone reading this: don't take yolo strats based on crazy luck lightly in a 7-hour speedrun).

Oh wow. If the commentary is anywhere near as informative as in the previous run, I might have a new favourite speedrun even though I haven't seen it yet.

(Does Cid 2 still use the same strategy? I'm considering starting a list of "games in which pillar dancing is useful at at least one point", and Final Fantasy 12 makes a rare entry into that list for the RPG genre.)
