If you run the PC version of the game, you can beat it with a time of around 8:20 on a fast computer. Problem is that different computers have different loading times.
I know time counts during cutscenes and the pause menu but what about loading? If it does the PS2 would probably be the best choice. I imagine deciding how to speed run through an RPG would be hard, deciding whether to kill certain enemies or not earlier on because it would make future enemies/bosses easier/harder? Perfect weapon and item set-ups, do you waste some time going for some godly stuff?
In a FF7 run, you'd be trying to escape from any and all random encounters (unless you're trying to get some item that will speed up a boss fight). This'll leave you at a low-low level by the time you get to the end of the game. Then, Jenova will give you tons of level-ups.
And ALL things count in to the time, cutscenes, loading, I even think pausing counts. Which is why the PC version would be THE BEST if you have a fast enough computer. On some computers, the loading time barely exists, and you don't need to change discs iirc.
Also, going out of the way to get items is probably a bad idea. The only thing I can see helping (and that's not by much) would be getting W-item for multiplication of Hero Drinks for the final battles. And that probably would only be easier, not faster. There may be a weapon that's fast to get, though.
Well fastest way I can think of dealing damage without insane time needed to obtain the items necessary is that one materia that causes you to hit four times. Iirc you can find it in the final area though so it won't help you versus hard battles before that.
You could build some fast levels in the Cave of the G (you know, the dungeon below the town of RedXIII.
You could try to abuse the limit of Cait Sith for boss battles like in FFVI if that's possible.
I have also heard of people doing zero materia runs, and also runs using only the original weapons you are equipped with. I have no idea how long runs like that would take but I bet they are pretty tough.
Unless the run is great, you realise that the run will have to be near or under 7 hours long, which seems impossible. If you get under 7 hours though, props to ya.
7 hours! Blimey! And here I am thinking the fastest run was around 8 and a half! 7 hours is an impressive notion. Do you have a link or anything to prove this. Not to question you, but even if I weren't going to run FF7 I'd still be very interested to see a 7 hour run.
After all, I put AT LEAST 200 hours into my very first run.
There is no download link or anything. There is a speed guide at gamefaqs.com. Unless you can get extremely close to 7 hours, I doubt Radix would put the run on the site unless he knew that for RPGs people would be willing to watch many hours of stuff.
I'm hoping that at some point it'll be 7 and under for basic games and 10 hours and under for rpgs...this would include FF 9 as well, but not include FF 8 since the speed guide for it said that the lowest time you can possibly in your wildest dreams imagine to get is 14 hours.
Well, even if it is over 7 hours, you can still see if you can get it listed on archive.org. If I recall correctly, there was a mention of a Donkey Kong 64 101% run on this site but no link, due to its total length being way over the 7 hour soft limit.
If someone put a FF7, 8 and 9 run up on archive.org I'll download them as soon as possible, but I would think I person would want it to be on SDA. Seems more official or something, I guess.
Don't ever use 'official' to describe me please Also the limit is flexable but it exists because there are so many shorter games that dont have runs yet. Also I really doubt some new person coming to the site and seeing "Final Fantasy # in 12 hours.... omg I've gotta see that!". Something that long isn't bound to impress many people.
it would impress me....my best time was only 16 hours in one sitting...I went all oggley boogly like towards the end, and lost the Sepheroth Fight on my first go at it.
you shoulda been there for my playing Resident Evil 1,2,3, Survivor, Zero, Outbreak, Dead Aim and Code Veronica X followed by Silent Hill 1-4 and Alone In The Dark in one sitting....48 hours...no sleep, lotsa food, piss breaks, caffien pills, and like, 12 cases of pepsi.
That many survival horror games straight gets to you. By the end of Silent Hill 2, I was hearing things, seeing things, and in a state of paranoid delusions. I was seeing things in the window, and I could swear the door handle was rattling, like someone was trying to get in. It was like being trapped in one of those games. I was isolated in my room, alone, lights off, no music to make things a little easier. To top it off...the paranoid delusions...god, that made it interesting.
