In Flames We Trust
I used to play the hell out of this game a couple years ago. Now I don't play it as much, but I'm wondering if a speedrun of it's story mode "Legend of the Fat Princess" is feasible.
There are 6 levels in the story mode. They are essentially an introduction to the games maps and game modes. The game modes are Capture the Princess (like capture the flag), Snatch 'n Grab (capture the flag 3 times), Invasion (capture outposts and have more than the opponent to drain their points, basically like "zones" in other games), and Team Deathmatch (drain enemy team's lives).
There are 6 classes excluding DLC:
Villager = default class at start of game. Lowest health, but is very fast and can slap enemies making them have limited control over movement.
Priest = heals allies, and once upgraded will be able to drain enemy life. Also has low health.
Mage = Can burn individual enemies from afar or create a large ring of fire. Upgraded allows you to do essentially the same but with ice. Also has low health.
Ranger = Has bow which can be charged to do more damage. Upgrade allows for use of a shotgun. Has better health.
Warrior = Has sword and shield. Upgraded has axe. Most powerful melee class especially when upgraded, and has most health. Can still die quickly due to range limitations and possibly being prioritized over other units.
Worker = Starts with axe that allows user to easily cut down trees and mine ore to upgrade units and build stuff. Upgrade allows workers to throw bombs. Has low health
The princess capturing levels should be simple; just charge in with the villager and get lucky enough not to die, and maybe have some allies speed you up on the way back. Snatch 'n Grab will be a little tougher since you must do it 3 times and the enemies will probably have their doors built by then. Team Deathmatch and Invasion will be a little tricky, as they will require your allies to not be dumb, and for your enemies to be dumb. Maybe it would be faster to rush upgrades for your allies so they can kill easier? Or maybe it would be faster to just upgrade a few classes? Or maybe it would just be faster to simply go about with un-upgraded units. This will require much experimentation to find the optimal strategy it seems.
I don't know of any useful glitches, but there are some useful strategies. Pressing up on the d-pad will make a nearby ally follow you. The upgraded warrior can move very quickly if you charge attack and then switch weapons before he down-strikes his axe. Doing that repeatedly will get you moving pretty fast. I think there also used to be a glitch until it was patched, where doing something with the warriors shield allowed him to move very quickly with the princess.
The levels themselves are not difficult, but speedrunning them will almost certainly require tons of luck on the part of the AI. For this reason, a speedrun of this game may be pretty tricky. Still, I thought it was an interesting idea. Thoughts?
