Ahoy,

I have spent last couple months comming to this website and watching speed runs, and I have finally decided to take a whack at it myself, I have looked over the rules and I think that I would be able to do a fast Fable 2  single segment speed run.

I play a lot of games but Fable 2 I played excessively, I have beaten the game countless times and I happen to know one of my runs was approximately two hours (Wasnt timing but was explicitly attempting to go fast.)

Just a quick question:

Under the rules it says no camcorders unless told to, but I dont have a capture card... I would be willing to show myself and it should be high quality (on a nice HD tv and should be a nice camera (hd quality) ) and I can borrow a friends tripod so it is stable throughout the entire video. If  this is unacceptable I may look into capture cards (been wanting one anyways) but Id prefer to camcorder it.

-------

Other then that issue I should have a the run done pretty quick, I'll play a few practice runs to brush up but I have it all planned out and know exactly how to make money quick, level up my character quickly and the best means to get through the game in an expediant manner.
---------

If I am unable to do this for whatever reason I am more then willing to post my strategies here so that one can be done as, with the right tricks, this game could be a surprisingly good speed run. (Though its single segment would have to be seperate from a segmented one due to time/money glitches)

Edit: Second question: "Slow time" spell slows down some clocks in the game but should not actually slow down Playtime right, because otherwise I will pretty much have to run the entire game in slow mo.

May as well post some of the tricks I would use now and possibly get some new ones if you guys have them and are willing to share:

Good Old Town vendors 50% off: If you take the good path in childhood you get a 50% all vendors bonus in Old Town, buy out their stocks and run/teleport to Market and you can sell all of it at a marked up premium. This can get loads of money in just a couple minutes. Avoids any kind of jobs or needless key collection. Money can be used to buy exp potions to allow speedier killing in the situations where it is needed. (Note: Dont sell back to them as they buy stuff at half priice as well0

Dash Deadarr: If you have level 2 Dexterous Styles by the Bridge quest you can dispatch of dash without chasing him, saving a good, 2-3 minutes of chasing.

Street Cred: You would be surprised at how much reputation you can build from buying a bard song/statue, which take substantially less time then going out and questing.

Edit Add: Yeah I forgot to add, there are a few questionable things that I could do, that are glitches and would help me with my No death Single Segment run... but I am not sure if they are allowed one of which is the Toughness glitch. If you have enough experience you can de level toughness, then re-level it. Later levels this takes too much experience to be worth it but at lower levels it saves time and money but I am not sure if twould be allowed *shrug*.
Heh, not that anyone care but planning is comming along nicely, did a single segment run today just finishing up now (stupid end cutscenes take forever.)
Essentially I finished the game, not including loading in about 2hrs 30mins (loading adds like 40 mins, and I have it installed *sigh*)

A lot of the run comes down to knowing which conversations to skip, which ones I can walk out of and continue on and which ones I have to sit there otherwise the person gets all pissy and makes you sit through the entire conversation over again.

I also made several mistakes with pausing and accidently sold the wrong item which ended up with me having to do roughly an addditional 10 mins of trading to make up for it

I now know exactly when to walk out of each conversation, which bosses I can outright skip, which weapons to sell where and when. And I have the arena down to a science. And I know exactly which quests to take to pump my rep up the fastest way possible.

To be honest, I think I am ready for an actual run, I just need a means to record it.
ow
Sounds good. You'd be better off with a cap card. Cams, even quality cams, are generally frowned upon, and I doubt it would get accepted. More importantly, you yourself will be glad you bought it. If you're putting all this effort in, it's worth a few bucks to make sure it gets published.

You can also use the card to broadcast lives streams on websites like justin.tv if you wanted.
The Dork Knight himself.
Unfortunately you'll have to use either a capture card or a dvd recorder. If you go with the capture card route, you don't have to spend much for a decent one (I've heard people say the Dazzle does just fine) but if you feel like shelling out the cash you can record in hd with the right card (can't remember specifically, it's on the tech support forum somewhere). For dvd recorders the only thing you have to ask yourself is whether you want to waste a ton of discs or not. If not, you'll need one with a hard drive, otherwise have fun wasting discs with a standard (and cheap) dvd recorder.

that i gotta see Cheesy

heres a really old makeshift route i made after 2nd playthrough
Childhood: In order go to trader > guard (you have to wait for the golden path or just hope to get lucky, otherwise he wont let your acceptance skip the dialogue and barnum wont talk to you) > barnum > rick (wait for rose to begin dialogue with dog) > 3 warrants > warehouse (youll have to wait for rose, you can't pick up the wine either; smash barrels in back of warehouse) > couple > magpie (he can't be woken up) > couple (give it to the wife) > dog's warrant > guard (ignore the cp perv) > monty > monty again > kock on door (wait like half an hour) > girl upstairs > trader (complete the A circle, it doesn't matter if it goes back down) > music box stand (will appear when you get the music box which should be right around the time you arrive) > bed (arrive before rose comes to block the path and you can sleep before her dialogue is finished). Notes: there is no way to speed up the lucien or hallway scene; you cannot press the A circle until you have slowed below running speed, which is damn slow. Target is less than 1050 seconds, but don't expect to get it.

Beginning crap: In order go to chest (break fence, cannot be vaulted (lame!)) > Theresa (sometimes you can skip much of her dialogue by getting far enough ahead of her, I do not know how but it saves appx 10-15 seconds) > directly to old tomb entrance (vault the crap) > guild (run past all the beetles, none of them are forced, however they fuck up the orb that needs to be shot if you run past it so shoot it beforehand) > light (if you do it quick enough there is no animation for activating will) > cullis gate (you must wait until the warning on the top of the screen advises you to level up, then you may do it) > level inferno (or whatever its called lol) > activate cullis gate > warp > vault off next to first horn to the right of the descending path > run to bowerstone road (the golden trail will show up about halfway) > enter golden circle then run to thag's camp > kill the bandits with inferno > kill thag with inferno > menu travel to bowerstone road > enter bowerstone > clocktower > the bed in the cow and corset (sleep once theresa's timer starts, this will skip the 5 minute wait) > theresa's scene > exit to old town > exit to rookridge road > run past everything > exit to oakfield > run to the sandgoose and add it to your map (the spot you have to be in is by the bridge, where it warps you when you menu travel there, going in the sandgoose does nothing) > run to the temple of light abbot > once he's done talking leave the scene and menu travel to the sandgoose > speak to barnum > when the scene's over quest travel to rookridge and run past everything (in the inn you have to kill at least one bandit before you can exit) > run past everything to Dash and shoot him (this completes the quest) > menu travel to the sandgoose > run to sculptor > menu travel to the sandgoose, by the weapons stall you should be in view of at least four people, pump your trophy a couple dozen times for the appx47 renown needed (this should go very fast, the messages at the top will tell you when you have enough renown) > menu travel to the temple of light and see the abbot. Notes: none. Target unknown.

Hero of Strength: In order menu travel to the sandgoose > hannah > ignore her and enter the cave (none of the dialogue or scene is necessary) > central chamber (hannah takes forever so feel free to tapdance, you should heal your dog for his scene later (he's still hurt from thag 'member)) > first chamber > at 100% leave to central chamber and ignore the hollow men (they chase after you and hannah follows behind, then they die when entering the central chamber, you will need to encourage the last two or three to die with inferno cuz they get stuck behind hannah (how the hell?) and she waits at the entrance until they're all dead) > second chamber: this is boring but you get some nice experience, kill them with inferno they only take two hits and are way too slow to get to hannah > once 100% is reached run to the central chamber because if you stay up for half a second to kill the remaining hollow men hannah feels the need to run up the stairs > boring central chamber scene with your dog, sometimes he gets caught in the doorway and wastes 6-10 seconds so might want to save beforehand > "eliminate the hollow men" fight: kill them all with two infernos (this is even faster than if you had say that hammer from oakfield) > "headless hollow man" level inferno to lvl 2 and hit him with lvl 2 targets (this takes forever and if sda allows the month-rent-and-store-profit (lol @ my creative names) thing for tons of money (i can't check cuz my interwebs are down) then all this will planning is void and you'd be better using an expensive sword) > final room > leave immediately > if you reach the temple of light fast enough you'll skip the part of the scene where the guard kills the abbot and and hannah yells noooooooo, so, you know, hurry (lol) > the golden oak scene cannot be sped up > menu travel to guild > enter scene and skip dialogue. Notes: none. Target unknown.

Hero of Will:

Potential glitch use:
Questions: clock running during saves?

i stopped cos i couldn't find an adequately fast method of gather the 1000g for the butler, but that's cos i didn't think of it until i got there;

time skip money glitch prolly fix that right up

or what you said

i'm curious if we would use the in game counter for time; as far as i can tell it's seriously whacked out and no matter what i do i get different times; im suspicious it may factor saving

Well, decided to do a bit of a test run, Single Segment No Deaths 3hrs 44 mins.. there were a lot of mistakes, so I could have easily saved 30 mins or so.

The only problems I made other then minor technical errors and times where I was just not there mentally (wasnt a serious run):
1. Forgot to nab a pistol before the rookridge bandits quest, so had to chase Dash. Wasted 2 minutes.
2. Chose the wrong quest for grinding Rep (Graveyard Quest) for the Crucible. Wasted 3 minutes.
3.Rose a bit too much money exploiting the half off sales in Bowerstone to get the 1k rep from giving Barnum 5k to boost the town up. Wasted 2 mins.
4.Minor Movement/Combat Errors...Prolly a total of 5 minutes.
5. Incorrect teleporting, just going to slightly the wrong place but going with it because not a serious run. Wasted 5 minutes or so.

Route So far:

A.Childhood (Long Cutscene A)
B. Guild Cave (ignore enemies)
C.Thag
D. Collect 1000 Dollars while waiting for Theresa (yes there is that much in junk sitting around the market. This is for "The Bargain" later in the game. Also go to the Castle area and get the statue plinith
E. Talk To theresa (Long Cutscene B)
F. Run to Cemetary and do demon door, the extra experience lets you get Dexterous Styles lvl 2
G. Run to Oakfield (ignore all enemies)
H.On way to Temple of Light go to Statue Maker and make statue(s). Also After getting Rookridge Bandits Quest, jump off bridge and snag Pistol.
I. Kill Dash (the quick way)
J. Turn Hannah to Hammer (Long Cutscene C)
K. Run to Garth, (ignore enemies)
L. Bargain
M. Route to Westcliff. (ignore enemies) Make sure to grab the chest at the beginning of the balverine area for sword/potions.
N. Raise Rep for Crucible via Saving Temple of Light (maybe needing to show trophy to a couple people or pay bard.) and money for Weapon/ Barnum.
O.Crucible (all perfect rounds despite having no magic (takes too long to level)... yay!)
P. Spire (Fastest Route : Obey, Ignore, Obey). At the end while garth is blowing up boats just run to the boat at the end, it'll fade to black. (Long Cutscenes D)
Q. The run around back to cave then back to the tower. Just run staight up and kill everything when you get to the top.
R. Bolt through the swamp (after Long Cutscene E), ignore the troll at the 3/4th point.
S. Rep Grind with T.O.B.Y., Something Rotten and Hobbe Cave (T.O.B.Y. may not be the best choice, not sure... the other two are the best choices as they are short and give a lot of rep. Treasure island of doom would be good, but is too long of a quest. Rescuing Charlie and Love Hurts again take a lot of time. May swap T.O.B.Y for Evil in Wraithmarsh)
T. Go Sacrifice yourself or the chick to the Shadows (I think both are same amount of time (Long Cutscene F))
U. Run through Reaver's Rear Passage (ignore enemies)
V. Sit up on the platform to the left and kill everything while occasionally shocking the spire. Blow it up.
W. Sit through Long Cutscene G.
X. Ignore paradise farm, turn around and go to sleep, then get music box.
Y. Sit through Long Cutscene H, Kill Lucien (very anti-climactically)
Z. End Game with long Cutscene I, choosing your ending (again, anti-climactic... I think they all pretty much take the same amount of time. Though if the end cinematic counts towards time, one may make Hammer tak a lil less, not sure which.)

End time (messing up parts I and N slightly): 3:44, no Deaths and 0 STDs
Oh and for the Curious, ending Abilities:
Brutal Styles: 0, Physique : 0,Toughness 2
Dexterous Styles: 4, Accuracy: 4, Speed 4
Shock 2 (no other spells)

For the record, I believe gun is the best choice for weapons pretty much through the whole game. Once you get dexterous 2 your shots power and speed up dramatically. From there levelling up physique/spells is useless because the gun can hit things, even on the ground and does massive damage. The only enemies that it may be faster to use a high level spell  on(Hollow Men) are relatively early in the game and if you try to level up to that point by then you have already wasted too much time levelling.

I used (well, had it equipped, never used once) the Rusty Sword through the entire game until they gave me the steel cutlass, and I sold that to get a better pistol.
Ahoy, just so you know I am still working on the run, I discovered a few glitches that would help the run along, including getting a lot of bonus exp. (not sure if I knew the gltich before the last post.)

I am considering recording and sending in soon. My previous post was quite simply, daft. Unless some major skip is found (unlikely) I think that a good goal to aim for is sub 3:30... in all honesty, if the run cut out load times (even with the game isntalled) it would probably run at around 2:30, and unskippable cutscenes, would prolly make the run more like 1:30, but I digress.

I think my route planning is done. I know how to get enough money fast enough to pretty much negate  all the running around I did before, saving a lot of time. Assuming solid execution on my behalf, good luck on what the vendors sell, I should be able to get sub 3:30. I will probably do a few full practice runs over the next week, then record a few runs and try to get my fastest run to look clean, which is hard because the hero in Fable 2 handles like a boat.
Looking forward to it!
Mass Effect 2 can go suck balls.
Is this dead already? I was really looking foward to this... if he doesnt come back to it I may work on this after Mass Effect.

Dead? Its been like one week since I last posted. Don't worry I am still working on it, I just need to start recording runs (I can't record and stream, and I have been streaming practice runs) get a nice clean looking one (keeping the hero from running into walls is nigh impossible, more drifting then a street racing game) and bittorrent it to mike.

I may even be going to the marathon to do a Fable 2 run, maybe, I hope so but somethings need to be sorted out.
Mass Effect 2 can go suck balls.
Bottom of first page/top of second page might as well be dead... it's cool though if your still working on it I'm looking foward to this alot.

One problem is that this may have to be single segment only I know thats what you are working on but in the off chance that someone wants to try segmented I don't think it would be possible.
looking forward to this as well

tehrandom, what would make the game have to be ss?

also ilseroth i assume you're using real-time instead of the in-game count? i remember getting really inconsistent times being the reason i stopped looking at this game

Sorry bout the slow reply; to answer both of your questions, it has to be single segment because the game doesn't allow multiple saves and auto saves frequently. So unless each segment was roughly 20 seconds long it would be silly to not SS it. Besides the game is only 3 hours and change with only a few major fail points.

And yeah, you really cant use the in game clock as it doesn't count time spent in menus. Now admittedly I try to keep that to a minimum but with how much teleporting through the menus I do it definately would skew the time in my favor whether I want it or not.
My feelings on The Demon Rush
Quote from Ilseroth:

And why is this a bad reason not to use the in-game timer? There are a bunch of games where the menu doesn't count against time, but we still use the in-game timer for those games.
it would probably be a good idea not to use it anyway though...

although, i remember i was pretty sure saving skewed the timer, so it might be irrelevant
I decided that seeing as the timer seems consistant (always around the same spot at the end of the run) just to use that for the timing. If in verification it is decided it will have to be timed ina  different way, so be it.

That bieng said I had a decent run yesterday for 3:20 really just need to start recording.
I guess this is never coming...
Waiting hurts my soul...
Never say never. Wink
WOW.
I was to do a F2 run until Skyrim came out. Then Skyrim came out.
Never coming out is it

Okay, I took some guidance from the above posts, and did some planning of my own, and I have what I think is a pretty solid route. Some differences between my route and the ones described above:

- I ended up going with Will instead of Skill, as this gives some flexibility to deal with both AOE and single target situations. This tends to work really well just about everywhere except on troll fights.

- I don't use the "Toughness glitch" (selling and re-buying a level of Toughness to refill your HP) because it's pointless. I don't find "no deaths" to be a compelling goal for this game because deaths don't afford you any advantage (you respawn in the same spot you died, immediately, i.e. you can't death warp), and they cost you any XP orbs that you haven't picked up off the ground yet, plus around 5 seconds of staring at the death animation and your corpse. Obviously you should avoid deaths to avoid losing time, but spending more time in the menu to avoid a death than you would actually lose from the death doesn't really make sense to me.

- I don't use the Physique glitch (legitimate glitch where you can infinitely sell your highest level of Physique after sleeping in the Monster House) because it's been patched out of the game and I don't feel like going to the lengths necessary to facilitate its use. Also, the only times you visit Bowerstone Market, you're not likely to have accumulated enough XP to buy enough levels of Physique to gain any significant amount per sell-back, which means you'll be standing there for a very long time selling Physique over and over to power-level your abilities. No thanks.

- I don't use the Xbox clock change money exploit for two reasons: first, I find this type of exploit to be extremely sketchy even from a typical glitching perspective, and second, it's way too slow compared to just farming the tiny amount of required gold in Bowerstone Market at the beginning of the game. The Crucible also gives you plenty of gold to cover Barnum's fees for Westcliff Development.

- I'm skipping the Dash quick kill for now because, while I can easily guarantee Dextrous Styles 2 before Bridge Too Far, I can't seem to get the quick kill in any case. I'd love it if someone had some more info on how to actually accomplish this.

- For those curious, assuming you do the TOBY quest as quickly as possible (which gets you a fair number of evil points), the fastest ending to choose is Wealth. It is 7 seconds faster than Love, and 9 seconds faster than Sacrifice. For this purpose I assume that timing does not stop until the screen fades to black after Theresa says "Begone," since until that point you technically have control. (Hammer's dialogue changes very slightly depending on your alignment, hence why the speed of completing TOBY matters - you will probably have to kill a few folks to do it as quickly as possible.)

I'll be streaming attempts starting in the next few days, so come join if you're still interested in this game: http://twitch.tv/vulajin
Completed my first run with a time of 4:06:24. Highlight if you're interested: http://www.twitch.tv/vulajin/c/4741060

Some notes:

- I timed from gender selection until the fade to credits. This is kind of a weird hybrid of SDA and SRL-style timing, but it somehow made sense to me when I was starting, so I'm going with it.

- I skipped Defender of the Light, opting for Cold Comfort Farmer instead. This quest is a little faster than Defender of the Light, and it gives you a Steel Cutlass that you can sell later on for gold for potions.

- I opt for the Westcliff statue plinth instead of Castle Fairfax, to save a lengthy detour and two extra load screens.

- I learned during Something Rotten that rock trolls can most likely be dispatched with a single Inferno 5 AOE. You can squeeze a cast in by using Time Control 3 to give yourself time to get very close to the troll and then charging the Inferno. This should save huge time on both The Crucible and Something Rotten.
Having watched an old highlight on Ilseroth's Twitch channel, it looks like Evil in Wraithmarsh is probably slightly faster than T.O.B.Y. The timings for the various Reaver rep grind quests look like this:

Hobbe Squatters: ~5:15 (from my run)
Something Rotten: ~6:00 (from my run, before new, faster rock troll strats)
Evil in Wraithmarsh: ~6:00 (from Ilseroth's highlight)
T.O.B.Y.: ~7:15 (from Ilseroth's highlight)

So it seems like the optimal set of quests should be Hobbe Squatters, Something Rotten, and Evil in Wraithmarsh. However, I'm probably going to time Love Hurts as well, because this one quest would replace both Hobbe Squatters and Something Rotten, as well as Westcliff Development (which would also save the need to go out of your way to give Barnum the gold).
Did another run today, got 3:49:26 (again, timed from gender selection until fade to credits): http://www.twitch.tv/vulajin/b/551560791

More notes!

- First, here's the link to the aforementioned Ilseroth Twitch highlight: http://www.twitch.tv/ilseroth/b/289347006 (this is only the last hour of a run; the other ~3 hours aren't available anywhere I can find)

- I noted the game time in Ilseroth's run is 11837 seconds (3:17:17). The game time in my latest run is 11918 seconds (3:18:38). The game time in my first run was 12818 seconds (3:33:38). So game time does appear to be fairly consistent. From testing, we know that it does not count loading screens or menus. It seems likely that it also doesn't count autosaves, which I had in my run but Ilseroth did not (more later). Also, the game clock is not visible until you actually open the menu after finishing the game and watching the credits. I don't intend to use this to time my runs, as I consider menu optimization to be a valid part of the run which should be measured.

- A stream viewer helpfully pointed out to me that autosaves can be disabled in one of two ways. First, you can ensure that you have six save files before starting your game. Because the game has a hard limit of six files, it will require you to continue without saving. Second, you can have two storage devices available when you start your game (e.g. 360 HDD + memory card). When the game prompts you to select a storage device, decline to choose one, and it will continue without saving. This will help narrow the real time gap between Ilseroth and me.

- Another stream viewer taught me about the "XP duplication" exploit. To do this, plug in a second controller and have it join the game (don't use a profile or existing save, join without saving). Open the menu on the second controller and go to Abilities. The second character will have the same Abilities that your main character had; sell them all. Then, have the second character exit the game. All of the XP will automatically be granted to your main character. Repeat as many times as you want. This exploit takes about 20-25 seconds per use, and allows you to pump yourself up by 50% of your total spent XP. I haven't found it necessary to use this yet, because it generally would only be useful early game (specifically, to get Inferno 3 before Cold Comfort Farmer), and at that point you have low enough XP that the exploit isn't super useful compared to just buying a level 4 potion from the potion store in Bowerstone Market.

- Speaking of which: if you're able to get about 1600 gold during Bowerstone Market grinding, you can double it using the Old Town discounts to get about 3k. This is enough to cover The Bargain and also buy you a Concentrated Will Potion (12500 XP). This will let you get Inferno 3 before Cold Comfort Farmer. A Skill build could similarly use a level 4 Skill potion to pump up Accuracy before fighting the forest troll.

- My rock troll "quick kill" strats don't work as well as I thought. Inferno AOE is kinda fidgety in terms of whether it actually hits the maggots, and the troll's i-frames kick in as soon as you kill any of the maggots. Thus, you'll still have to Inferno 5 at least two or three times. Regardless, this still saves a ton of time over trying to take out the maggots one-by-one.

- The fastest combination of quests for Reaver rep grind is definitely Hobbe Squatters (4:00), Something Rotten (5:00), Westcliff Development (2:00), and Evil in Wraithmarsh (5:15). Love Hurts is way too long to be worthwhile (16:00). The Blind Date is pretty quick if you pick up the first straight female you can find (instead of looking for a gay male), but still probably about 6:00 in that case.

- I still can't figure out the Dash quick kill. Does anyone who's ever played this, even casually, know how this works?

- Skipping T.O.B.Y., possibly among other things, seems to have changed Hammer's outlook towards me at the end, altering the amount of dialogue she had when I picked Wealth. So I'm probably going to have to retime the endings. Undecided
