Well, I don't know what notch could run, though I hear Minecraft - which is a game I personally do not care about, but I of course know how popular it and notch is for getting notch to attend to be an attraction - is technically runnable now in some mode. I'll ask him when I contact him, which obviously won't be until after the 31st.

The other person I'm talking about has a run on this very site, so that's what I asked about in the chat.

Damn, you have me thinking now!
Make it so.

I'm honestly not seeing a major target audience clash, but that could be because I have absolutely zero interests in actual sports.

You wouldn't think so, but I can assure you that the overlap between gaming geeks and sports geeks is HUGE. At MAGFest 9, I went down to the lobby to get a pizza, and the lobby bar/TV area was PACKED with people watching the NFL playoffs (And lest you presume that there was no overlap, consider that MAGFest had essentially taken over the hotel for that weekend).

That is slightly discouraging. I think I'm right in saying they end reasonably early in august though right? Sometime around the 12th I think. So maybe the week after that would be more ideal?

My feelings on The Demon Rush
Okay I'll address other things later, but I have to emphasize this one point.

Quote from mike89:
Uhh, you do realise that Aug 6-14 runs right through the Olympics, don't you? I think that would be just about the worst time to run a charity marathon.

THIS THIS THIS THIS THIS THIS THIS THIS THIS! Overlapping with an event millions of people watch worldwide is a horrible idea. You need to change the dates ASAP frezy man. A week or two later would be perfect. Also what Emptyeye said about gaming and sports geeks is very true.

Also, don't make this marathon six days, just aim for a weekend. You don't even know how many people will be coming, and I am 99% sure you cannot fill six days for your first marathon. Remember, CGDQ was about 2 and a half days over a weekend, and that had 20+ people attending.
WOW.
The Olympics might be an issue, but what about timezones? The Olympics are in London, and that is +1GMT in Sweden. Let's say peak time in New York is 8pm, that would be 1am in London and 2am in sweden if the east coast is -5GMT. I'm sure the olympics are not on at 1am.

The Olympics are broadcast worldwide.
Make it so.

And no matter what, and how unlikely it may be, we want at the least to have the potential for worldwide coverage. I agree that avoiding the olympics is the way to go.
Totally rad
But we'd still lose a lot of viewers when the olympics *are* on; it would be a shame to only have very few viewers half of the time due to another event taking place. Since it's indeed a widely watched event, it would be a good idea to change the proposed marathon date.

I'm just going to say SDA > Track and Field. I guess I do agree that we best avoid it.

I think, he included time to arrive, set up, socialise, pack away, and leave in the six-day-reservation. So one-and-a-quater beforehand, one-and-a-quarter afterwards, depending on when people arrive and leave, plus two-and-a-half marathon makes six days => purrfect ^^

I also agree that we should avoid the Olympics, even. It might mean less events at some locations, but it will certainly mean less than half the viewers at least half the time. Not sure, if we might not add another extra week safety between Olympics and marathon … When I get to phoning around, I'm definitely going to look into the later parts of August.
Waiting hurts my soul...
You'll also be fighting for coverage on news sites, which means less exposure.
Thank you mikwuyma for mentioning this. I had no clue and I never watch the Olympics.

Hope "Folkets hus" in Skövde are flexible enough or still have a spot for us after the Olympics.

Damn, the Olympics...

I was supposed to meet frezy on saturday but this is surley a reason not to have it on said dates. Frankly, I think doing the old switchero is not a hard thing for the dates, but you only have to decide other better dates! We cannot compete against power of that magnitude*

Any time after the Olympics should be fine, whenever that ends.
Totally rad
According to the website, the Olympic Games are from the 27th of July till the 12th of August, so we could just start off on the 13th, for instance.
Hey, this is flicky posting on cygfher's account, just to say, I think we should do just a get together this year instead of going for a charity marathon, like a test for how it will work and who we can get and the quality and variety of runs we can get.

I don't really have time to explain whys and wherefores but I think this would be a better idea. An idea feasel and I came up with was just having people donate towards a future marathon or just last minuting it to a charity. It doesn't seem like we could get a marathon running Europe that could stand up to the aMerican ones at this point. I can't post for a few days though but I will write out a post then.
Let the music play!
I think you're being rather negative with this comment. 'It won't compete with the US marathon, so there's no point?' That's not the point at all - it should be a fun get together, and the ability to raise money for a charity at the same time. Doesn't matter if we don't get as much money as the winter marathon, it all goes to a worthy cause. I for one would rather keep it a charity event instead of not doing one, certainly not going to wimp out because this 'won't compete'.

I've said this before, we cannot compete with US SDA marathons... we are europe. we will do what we can and have fun.. I think right?
I'd definitely attend to this if it's hosted in Skövde seeing as I only live about 90 minutes away. I'm quite familiar with running Mega Man1-6 & a few other NES platformers & games at a high level so I could step in & run whatever you guys would like. I could offer a race in Mr. Gimmick seeing as I've played that game quite a lot & I also own a PAL cart, if that's the version we're playing on Wink But anyways, count me in.

We'd be delighted if we could even get close to being half of AGDQ. (a quick and dirty count gives me just above 30 people who have said they're interested to attend, I believe most of them people who would actually run games, and I know more EU people who haven't said anything but I believe would be interested) And yeah, the actual marathon period would probably just be about 4 days, but it's good having the place booked the whole week so we'll have ample time to set up and test things and get people installed and all that crap. And, of course, packing and cleaning after us afterwards.

I've been wary about the third week of August, but if it's in Sweden, I should be able to do it either way. I still have absolutely zero idea if there's even going to be something that might be a problem for me in the second half of August, and I can't know that until May. But them's the breaks. That's the week we're going to have to go with.

Stupid boring sports.

Even though I shouldn't, I've already started writing down things on a prospective game list. No! Bad Kenny! Don't do that until after the 31st!

To be fair, more than half of the runs on said game list are games I'd be running myself. So it's not very long. Which, incidentally, is what she said.

Wouldnt it be better to (After the 31st ofc) that the runners themself write what game and estimate time (SDA-standard!!!)
Cause its important that we have a strong group!

I wouldnt be so impressed to see, for example Super Mario Bros. with warps cleared after 20 minutes.

And.. Hahahahah. Grin

Edit: To be clear. I dont think anyone is bad in anyway. Sorry for that.
