Well what do you know, it's the man himself after all. Where have you been the past year anyway?

If you want to join the server I won't object. FTB is indeed amazing, although I really hope the server doesn't use all of Gregtech's expensive crafting recipes. Silicon cells for a solar panel? Sure. 3 freaking diamonds for a plain old macerator? Ouch. It's bad enough trying to get a decent Silk Touch pickaxe, even with Anvil/Uncrafting Bench shenanigans.
Is anyone else interested in just starting, and trusting new chunks to support the need for redpower ores? I bet that many of us are on some sort of break, and those are finite ; )

I'd rather not travel 1K blocks away from spawn again simply to get an ore or two like the last server. I mean sure, Nether and powered railtracks have since been added, still. Mystcraft shenanigans are another option, a good one IMO, but it's unstable right now. As in "kick player from a SP server" unstable.

Also, I'm pretty sure the Mindcrack pack has RP2. At least, one part of RP2 is volcanos that spawn, and I've seen at least a few spawn. Not sure about the ore since there's several dozen of them all over the place. I can't even imagine how much ore will be hidden in Twilight Hills, I'll find out once I get my BS sword again.
Yeah, some of the packs do have redpower, but none of them seem to have red and myst (without cutting many of the other good ones). I am curious which mod pack exactly we'll be using? The Mindcrack players I watch have mentioned that Mystcraft will be added to the pack, and since mystcraft is not based on generation at all, we could certainly start on that pack.

I'm just very interested in starting this pack, and I'm afraid that things will lose momentum and then not happen Sad

We're waiting for the ultimate pack to be released, which will contain the mods of both the Direworf and Mindcrack pack. IIRC. Mind, I think Mindcrack has all the worldgen mods that the ultimate pack will have, minus Mystcraft, so it might be possible to start a Mindcrack server and than update to ultimate. Might. I'm not sure.
The main issue right now is that all of the 1.4.6 packs are still buggy. Mystcraft portals tend to crash the server and a lot of blocks are still misbehaving in some pretty serious fashion. There's no point in starting a 1.4.2 world anymore, clearly, and we don't have to decide on one of the two 1.4.6 packs yet because they both still misbehave a lot. Also, there might still be item ID conflicts when upgrading to the ultimate pack eventually. I hope things will be ready after AGDQ, but this whole porting to 1.4.6 and incorporating RP2 has caused a lot more trouble than most people in the community expected.

Scrap the update idea than. The packs in SSP are, from what I've seen, reasonably stable, at least if you leave Mystcraft alone. I assume SMP is a completely different story?

...Actually, come to think of it, I do remember running into some weirdness when testing stuff in Creative. A few ores weren't copying themselves into my inventory properly when told to. Heh.

I'm definitely waiting for a stable release before launching the server.
The dire wolf packs feels pretty solid, I've been playing it in multiplayer and it seems like everything but mystcraft works as intended. in mystcraft, complex ages still tend to trouble the server, and generating new ages lag the server pretty bad. It feels like it is probably approaching stability though!

Very exciting.
heh heh heh heh heh heh heh heh heh
Direwolf lacks Twilight Forest, which is pretty much the go-to place when Mystcraft is missing/banned since it's hills are loaded with the ore that is now difficult to get. If anything, the Mindcrack pack with Mystcraft added, but anything except for Linking books, the Link modifier, and the Lectern and Bookstand disabled would work as well as it could. No ages, but that'd be the best that could work while Mystcraft is in the state that it is. On the bright side, teleportation hubs.
Yeah, mystcraft does make visiting friends ludicrously easy. So many things in mods I look at and just think, "Minecraft could be so amazing... why is vanilla so lame ;_;"

MC has already sold millions, complete with crowd-funded documentary following this epic tale of trials and unexpected success. Or whatever.

Effort? Why bother?

On an unrelated note, anyone know how to get Ice Shards in Mindcrack? I need them to get Crushed Ice for...well, honestly for no reason since I'm such an electrical engine whore, but right now I want it just to say I finally did manage to get it.
Bees, dude. Those freakin bees.

(I think)
heh heh heh heh heh heh heh heh heh
Really? Checking the centrifuge recipes there doesn't seem to be a wax that can yield crushed ice. Or are you talking about the freezing effect of ice bees?
All that I know came from a cursory google search, which returned this

"I saw in dw20 spotlight video that you can get ice shards from more advanced bees of the frozen branch"

Guess it's a specialty of some race of bee. Which is inconvinient, since I'd need to live in or right next to some ice biome to get them. That'll take some effort.

EDIT: Finally figured out which bees I need to get the Silk Wisp, which I need to make Apiarist armor, which grants immunity to the various horrible things bees can do to you. I need tropical bees, which poison you for half a minute if you get near them while they're active - just enough to kill you if you're not regenerating health - and which produce, say, 4 combs, each has a 60% chance of yielding 1 or 2 Silk Wisp. I need 3 stacks and 24 Silk Wisp to get a full suit.

I don't know when the gaming tradition started that you're only to get useful items once you've proven you don't need them or after they cease to be actually useful in some arbitrary manor, but curse whatever day it was.

EDIT 2: So, I've got a question. Why do machines violently explode when subjected to higher voltages than they're made for? I can understand them not working, I can understand them breaking horribly, buy why do they violently explode? TNT is not part of the crafting recipe of any machine. The Implosion Compressor uses Industrial TNT, but it's not crafted with it, so why the explosions? ITNT is needed for Iridium Plates and it's really difficult to mass-produce (without a creeper/blaze farm at least, but I have neither ATM), if it's apparently part of every machine not fit for Extreme Voltage, why can't I just fill it with compressors and extractors?

Also, I've set up a Liquiduct lava pump station in the Nether, in a Nether Fort over a giant lava ocean. 9 pumps are pumping up lava faster than my 44 Geothermal Generators are managing to cook them into EUs. I'm getting over 10K EU per second there. Liquiducts are awesome, BTW.

EDIT 3: I've been experimenting with Mystcraft, in an attempt to make a Dense Ores world that is not, how to put this nicely, entirely worthless. However, I've recently learned of a symbol that can counteract the inherent instability of Dense Ores: Charged.

So far my greatest success was a world with 3 Medium Forest/Jungle biomes, bright, with only caves, some inconsequential fog/sunset/etc stuff, standard terrain, eternal night/storm, 2 Dense Ores and 12 Charged. Sure, there's a lightning strike every other second (or every second), but when you're mining underground, who cares?

Save your experimenting for the server haha ^^
I really hope mc 1.5 will finally get a working ftb release :s
heh heh heh heh heh heh heh heh heh
I wouldn't want to create 50 Mystcraft worlds that end up clogging the server files until they're removed when I can make less than a dozen with some preparation.

That said, the experiment was somewhat of a success. I've found a combination that has a moderately low level of instability, low enough to potentially get away with only a few non-issue surface debuffs, rather than world-eating decay. Sadly I've noticed the hard way that the weakest form of decay - Purple - is really slow to start, so it's borderline impossible to judge the final stability of the world without waiting for a few hours to see if something finally shows up. Or get lucky and run into it while mining.

Speaking of mining, double Dense Ore is insane. I just did a run with 4 pouches (Ender variety, although plain canvas would have done perfectly well), a Fortune III diamond pickaxe and a Silk Touch diamond pickaxe, mining everything in sight until I ran out of space to hold resources. Here's what I ended up getting entirely, highlight given in bold:
763 Coal ore
388 Redstone ore
85 Nikolite ore
18 Sulphur ore
22 Saltpeter ore
5 Uranium ore
34 Apatite ore
18 Pyrite ore
278 Iron ore
167 Gold ore
82 Tin ore
53 Copper ore
70 Silver ore
45 Lead ore
29 Ferrous ore
125 Bauxite ore
14 Tungsten ore
20 Tungstate ore
17 Sheldonite ore
480 Xychorium crystals total
42 elemental Shards total
639 Diamonds
42 Emeralds
88 Rubies
71 Sapphires
137 Green Sapphires
108 Sodalite Dust
47 Cinnabar Dust
58 Sphalerite Dust
1532 Lapis Lazuli
25 Iridium Ore

At that point my previously empty diamond chest couldn't hold anything more. Yes, that's not all I got, but the rest is pretty much just there for novelty. Also, does anyone know whether Fortune III drops more coal on average than just getting the Ore with Silk touch and getting 2 dust out of it, and does Fuel have any use other than being burned in a Diesel Generator for 380K some EUs, or in a Combustion Engine for 6 MJ/t for 10K ticks?

I'm currently setting up the servers (minecraft+mumble).
They will most likely go live this week/weekend.
Drop me a PM for the server ip.

...Huh? I thought we'd be waiting for the ultimate pack. Direwolf 5.1.1 doesn't have all the mods in it; Gregtech and Traincraft, to name two, are both missing. Will the server add them manually or roll without?
I vote against gregtech. Some of the endgame stuff is pretty durn hard without it complicating things.
heh heh heh heh heh heh heh heh heh
What exactly is "endgame stuff"? I honestly don't know because while Dense Ore Mystcraft drops Iridium like candy, I don't have the patience to grind out enough chrome and titanium for most of the stuff that takes "advanced" whatever. How much does a Fusion Reactor cost, again?

On that subject, how are you "supposed" to get Iridium, anyway? Mystcraft is technically a "cheat" of sorts, since it and Greg aren't in a modpack together without manually adding either.

The next update of FTB is going to feature customizable modpacks anyways.
As FlamingMage said gregtech gets kind of ridiculous later on which is why I've decided to go with the direwolf pack for now.
I'm pretty sure the "ultimate" pack will not be released for ~half a year seeing how slow the ftb team is in developing a simple launcher and how minecraft still hasn't gotten a solid first party mod api.

So the server will run default Direwolf 5.1.1?

For now it will until there are other options.
