I wanted to do an RTS now. This is what cought my eye. Segmented.
The minimum amount of missions are 9(4 on battlemap) if no territory with which I am advancing isn't attacked others are resigned. I call battlemaps the ones chosen on map.
Probably gonna run with ORDOS first because of their fast moving and turreted units. Prime objectives in battlemaps are
always the same which is to destroy all except windtrap buildings(don't remember about Capitals). Moving against Atreides.

About moving against Atreides - Atreides have few units with homing missiles(Mongoose and the missile turret) and no real
infantry against vehicles. So there is nothing at start that can easily kill hit and run units. But I haven't gotten a strategy to
go on the Capital neither I have one on the Harkonnen.

About moving against Harkonnen - Missile problem is a problem for Laser Tanks.

Battle Tactics:
- At start of each battlemap the starting units are chosen randomly. For the 1st battlemap level I am aiming for laser tanks
and at least one dust scout for infantry and attack the base immediately. Taking out infantry with the dust scout. Small
vehicles and buildings with laser tanks. On 2nd Level it depends whenever the enemy uses Tleilaxu Leeches I restart till I
get two Kobras(3 if the extra forces are in the territory from which I attack). Otherwise the Kobras is not really necessary.
3rd(Shield Walls) If im not mistaken then I always get the Ixian reinforcements at start. Which are quite valuable.

- Rush Economics and build some Eye In The Sky to destroy most of the base!

Map Tactics:
Check attachment. Sand storms are random after the mission so I should go to places where they wouldn't matter the

route to the capital so much.

About timing:
There is an ingame timer which is shown after a mission. There are also a countdown timer in most missions. I looked
through the game speeds and 6 out of 8 setting speed seemed to be with the closest precision to the countdown timers.
There is something specific about Emperor though. I think it has an FPS manager because I have seen slow downs when viewing over large portion of units but the FPS seems ok. So it might be that the game is being slowed down to keep FPS over some rate. But it does not change the timings though!

The first problem:
I have already run through 6 out of 9 missions(all recorded). But now I am stuck at the Atreides Arrakis capital. Stuck in finding a fast way to complete this mission. The problem comes from the amount of turrets around the base which are needed to be taken out with all other buildings except Windtraps and Civilian buildings.
Another way to complete this mission without having to destroy the whole base is by making the enemy retreat. But I don't really know when that happens. Though when it does the enemy has 3 minutes to have 10 units gotten to the center of the side between the sadukar and my base.
It is something about the AI no longer having any military units, buildings, MCV and spice refineries. But the question really is if I really can't take out the towers around the base in 3 min or somehow get 10 units for the enemy to flee to the spot with because all with what the AI goes to it are Harvesters.

Still haven't found out when atreides retreat from the Capital. So I will just have to clean the whole base(minus windtraps and civil buildings)!

Ordos don't have any real units that could take out towers without deploying and getting hurt by towers(Windtraps are too scattered to be easily taken out!). But the atreides do have a unit like that which is the Minotaur!

So I plan to get an Rank II APC(fastest unit) with 2/3 engineers and move inside the base and deploy units near the Atreides Construction Yard. Capture the construction yard, factory and might as well capture the starport. When I tried this there was a minotaur near the construction yard and it destroyed the APC but luckily I did capture all three buildings at once. So there might be saving needed before I go in the base!

I replace the Atreides Construction to MCV and then...  Well what can I do? Nothing really because I cannot escape the base with it and cannot make anything that would stop Atreides units from destroying it(AI starts making hordes of Snipers&Kinjals from 3 barracks and fremen warriors from the camp). I could prepare an advanced carryall before I go in but then again there is another way. AI doesn't like walls and will take them out one by one but they cannot do it fast enough because I build another wall nearby and do it repeatedly. But while I am building walls I cannot build anything else. So I might as well order some Minotaurs at the starport and continue to make walls until they arrive. They could easily take care of them selfs. So while they take care of the infantry and some vehicles I make a factory from which to build more minotaurs. Haven't tried this but it should work.

Then there is another way to get Minotaurs. That is to get the MCV away from the CPU base without building a adv carryall from my base but from the enemies. Problem is that the Hangar is guarded by enough Anti-Air units that might be hard to evade and building minotaurs from my base makes the need to transport them on the Capital platform to be of good use!

While other 5 missions were done in less than 2 min. capital might take 6 minutes!

WOW. This is quite a good topic Smiley I love this game (after StarCraft my favorite RTS). I keep my fingers crossed Smiley ANd wish good luck Cheesy

Your 'wall' strategy outlined above fills me with glee. I eagerly await this run.
Well there is another thing about walls. if you take a soldier and then make walls around him the AI will try to attack the soldier but won't ever get a good angle to hit him and it doesn't try to destroy the walls. But what I don't like about this is that some technical lags starts coming out which might be the AI making many attacking orders for most units.  Huh?

BTW I found out that you can't order Atreides units from the atreides starport only Ordos.  Too bad the Minotaurs can't heal themself's at any rank!  Undecided

Ah, I remember this game, used to be a favorite of mine. Post some segs on the tube or something (even though YouTube has been running terribly for me lately).

I will. But a technical problem showed up on my PC! My graphics card is dying. Not the first time but I did suspect it was the motherboards fault. But no, it might be the power supplies fault(Unstable voltage)!

Ooh, I've been waiting for this run  Cheesy
If only I could record myself I might've taken a stab at Atreides..Just gotta get a good run of the Tleilaxu attack on Caladan, those buggers keep hiding from me.. Emperor Worms gonna be a bitch, too, got any plans for it?

Ok so now I have a new powerful enough PC so I will continue this run!

[edit] All I can add right now was a test that I once made for Atreides Homeworld mission which I might use(when I get to it)! How to evade Hawkstrikes? AFAIK CPU fire Hawkstrikes to the place where most units are. So build a bunch of cheap infantry units and jail em! CPU will launch hawkstrikes on em and they won't run away.

[edit2] Also I think I know when the CPU retreats. It is when it has no more refineries and no money to build em(Also probably with what to build them). If CPU retreats right at the Capital then that will probably be a faster way to win than destroying all those towers one by one.

[edit2->edit3] "no money to build em"... No money right at that time. Because I once destroyed all refineries, construction yard, vehicle factory and the CPU kept making infantry until he could not make any more and attacked with all of them. Even without any money and no way to gain money it did not retreat.
+ I haven't been able to make it retreat right! It partly ignores the retreat beacon and does not send all his units to it. Only way I could help is by picking up it's vehicles with a adv carryall and put them at the beacon. Problem is I cannot get 10 available vehicles. Seems waiting 3 minutes will be the only option! Because destroying all those defence towers will take even longer!
| Also pathfinding can cause a lot of lag when ordering hundreds of infantry units no matter what PC you have(Emperor must be limiting). But it mostly occurs when you try to move them out of a base not into a base!
Now I get it!
Retreat when:
- Game Time over 10 min.
- No more credits available

Initiate when:
- No more refineries available. -> Random chance (~50%)

So whenever making the CPU retreat would be faster than destroying the whole base is questionable. + retreat itself takes 3 min.

So I need to destroy the base in 13 minutes or faster.
Ehhh with the first 6 missions I thought the speedrun would be 30 min. long as maximum.

I couldn't find a tactic to do the capital mission in 13 minutes. I made it retreat and finished at 13:18.

No big deal but once I overlooked the homeworld mission, where it is impossible to make the enemy retreat...  Shocked  There are about twice as many turrets in it than capital. Oh WESTWOOD why did you set turret destruction as a primary objective?
This is a headache.
Well I wanted to finally complete this run but it seems Emperor is incompatible with Windows 7 or with any 64bit OS! I reinstalled it with 1.09 patch added. It does launch, everything is ok until I order more than one unit in the game. Then FPS goes down to one or less and sometimes I even manage to freeze the PC! Changing compatibility modes did not change anything.

Does anyone else have Windows 7 or a 64bit OS with Emperor?
Heavy Metal Powered
I am playing Emperor on my Windows XP 64bit machine, but I have to set the game speed to 2 or the game runs too fast.

I've read that the Power Options in Vista / Win7 can screw with a lot of games, try setting the Power Options to high performance, then enter the Advanced Settings and go to Processor Power Management, set the minimum and maximum to 100% for "Plugged in".

If you have a multicore CPU (as most people have today) this can also be a timing issue, to fix this you can either minimize the game after starting it and then set the Affinity to 1 CPU in the Task Manager. Or you can edit the shortcut to the game by adding: "start /AFFINITY 0x1" before the application path, this will start the game on core 1. The Affinity value is a bitmask described in hex so for example 0x3 does not mean your 3rd core, if you need help understanding  how to select cores for a program before starting it, PM me.

First I thought this helped because I could move multiple units but then I tried adding some more and the started happening again.

Setting cores to one did not change anything either.

That glitch acts strangely I change the game speeds and I can move multiple units. Sometimes more sometimes less without the glitch occuring. Could even move 100 units one time, but it started occurring again when I switched my selection. I get a freeze if I move multiple units for a greater distance...
Seems I ain't the only one - http://forum.dune2k.com/index.php?topic=21700.0

And it also seems that Nvidia graphics cards are the ones to blame. Because an ATI graphic card user had no issues while playing Emperor on Windows 7!
oioi

there is a fix posted a few days ago Wink
disable the pointing lines or something...

worked fine for some me included... not tested a lot just first mission
in game options turn target lines off.
in game options turn target lines off.
Won't you continue this great speedrun? I always wanted to do a speedrun of this game. I am sure Ordos is best because of the fast and self repair units but Atreides also have great possibilities with the more complex/strategical units.
