I'm thinking of doing a Speedrun for Yoshi's Island: Super Mario Advance 3, or YI GBA, as I'll call it from now on. My game plan is to do a single-segment, any-% run through all normal levels INCLUDING the "tutorial" level, avoiding flowers and mini-games at any cost. My latest run clocked in at 2h 30m, with a lot of room for improvement. (I have a tendency to die in Lvl 2-4 near the end.) Enough senseless jabbering. Any suggestions?

(oh, and yes, I'm playing it on a GBP)
Thread title:
I thought the only difference between the versions was the extra stages? If you play any percent, you won't get the extra stages. I think the extra stages should just be submitted as new level runs.

But this brings up another question: Can runs on the GBA version of a level count as beating records on the SNES version? Ergo, can anyone prove or disprove that the physics of the two games are identical? [I haven't played the GBA one.]
I don't see why they'd bother changing the physics though. Most ported games are the same as the original (with a few extre levels, characters, games, etc) because the programmers are to lazy to change that stuff. They just copy and paste...don't they?
Roboticus is Champion!
Can't you just pull a start/select to skip the intro level?

See, that's what I've never been sure of. =)

Not on the GBA.
Hey lightweight, I'll help you out if I can. I was planning on doing a run for this, but I don't have the equipment (i'm lazy and cheap). If you die on bigger boo (i guess thats what you mean) fire two eggs off the wall at him, jump up a step, fire two more eggs, jump to the third step and fire the 5th egg to kill him, all without ever having to face left. Also, if the speedrun doesnt include the extra levels, why can't it be done on super nintendo and save the hassle of arguing game physics?
If it's anything like DKC2's port to GBA... yeah, the physics have been nuetered beyond all belief.  Granted, a majority of the changes made it easier for me to run, so it worked out pretty well.

The biggest incentive for me was just portability, the fact that the user could practice anywhere.  I was stuck on a college campus for 3 hours with nothing to do (Like I would bother to do homework!  HAH!), and working on my speed run was a great way to pass the time.

And when I got home to play it on the SNES... it got very ugly, very quickly.  Lots and lots of cursing.  Fun stuff.

I can not contribute anything useful to the discussion, so good luck!  I'd hope to see a single segment of this game sometime, and I hate downloading runs level by level
Let's see...

"If you play any percent, you won't get the extra stages."

I am fully aware of this. In fact, at the end of a world, I can't even reach the 200-point mark. My only goal in this run is to beat the game as fast as I can.

"Can runs on the GBA version of a level count as beating records on the SNES version?"

Not my intention at all. Since the GBA version has a few extra sections in some levels, I guess it can't take the place of any SNES record.

"can anyone prove or disprove that the physics of the two games are identical?"

I can. And as far as I can tell, they're the same exact thing, except for the screen size.

"Can't you just pull a start/select to skip the intro level?"

Even if I could, I won't. This run will be from the first time I gain control of Yoshi to when I hit Bowser with the last egg.

Oh, and the fact that I'm not doing it on SNES (even if I wanted to) is because I don't have a SNES anymore, and I currently don't have the money to buy another one.

To soteos: Thanks for the advice, but that's not where I die. I usually fall to my doom trying to jump on the swinging platforms without stopping (which is possible, but you have to swallow your pride and take the Middle Ring, then do a mighty jump.)

"I'd hope to see a single segment of this game sometime"

And that's just what I'm doing. Just wait a few months.

Hey. You can't rush greatness. Otherwise, Zelda 2k5 would already be here.
Well, I guess I can say aim for the middle (as if you haven't tried that). I just gotta say 1 cool thing about that level that will help with a speedrun though. In the second room go over to the flippers and lure a ghost guy to the edge, lick him up and use him to jump up to the second level. It skips the whole key segment and you dont have to egg the cloud.
Update: 2:08. Good time, but I still think I can avoid that big nasty 2 at the beginning. Got a few surprises in store, including a few tricks some haven't thought about. I'm still practicing.

On a related note, I was so close to recording this saturday, when my VCR got dirty, nasty, and plain unwiling. So I had to run and buy a Video head cleaner. After 3 uses, however, it was still dirty. And when I try a 4th time, the machine wouldn't spit out the cleaner! I had to break open the VCR (I had no screwdrivers at the moment) to retrieve my cleaner. Now my VCR sports a sexy new... ahem... inside look, but it finally decided to work properly. despite that little setback, I hope to have the run recorded by next week.

Thanks to those who keep cheering me on, and wait patiently for my acheivement (all 5 of you).
Forward standard-by-ten .
I'll watch it, wishing all the while it had been done on the SNES :<

I understand the situation, though.
