Specifically for live commentary, similar to the ear pieces used at SGDQ last month. budget gear is okay but am willing to shell extra $ for quality. Suggestions?  Also curious what mics were actually used at the marathon

Off the top of my head the SGDQ earset was a standard gain cardioid-directional Countryman E6 and the lavs were omni-directional Shures.  Cool Matty is the person to ask if you want definite confirmation.
