Finally found my first game to try serious speedrunning. The game is from 12 people team which explains why it's so full of bugs but while I was casually playing for the final ending of the game I found out that developers have made weird choices on how the game works and this makes the game so much fun to speedrun, at least for me.

For example, there is a mission where near the end is quest in which you need to protect an NPC and if this NPC dies it starts different quest line than if he stays alive, this isn't anything new but weird thing is that if you just kill this NPC at the beginning of the mission you start the quest line which is meant to start later during the mission. This means you can skip almost entire mission which casually playing takes about one hour maybe more and run it in 3 minutes.

Category that I'm currently working on would be something like single-segment any%. Also there are some difficulty settings like how enemies spawn, I would like to run the game on default difficulty settings. Of course low difficulty and low enemy spawn rate would be faster but I think it would be boring to watch and highest possible difficulty settings means insane level grinding on Mars so that would be boring too.

On my latest test run it took 52:53 to beat the game but I had two major mistakes. First was me just testing if it would be worth it to do more researches for stats bonuses but it was just money spent on wrong place and I couldn't afford useful CyberTech upgrades before last mission, this cost about one minute. Second was more of bad luck with enemy spawns than my mistake, but it cost me about two minutes. So sub 50 minutes is easily achievable and with lots of more practice on general gameplay I might be able to save at least 2-3 minutes more on my current route.

At the moment I don't have any of my test runs recorded to show how my full route goes but I'll start streaming soon (same username on twitchtv) and when I get any decent practice run that I can show to you I'll write more detailed comments about my route.

Major sequence breaks that I have found so far:
-Mission where you help looters as Jian member, if you shoot looters at their base you start quest line that skips almost entire mission.
-Mission before Mars, if you kill Dutch at beginning of the mission you again skip almost entire mission.

On Mars you have three choices that determines which missions you do after Mars and which ending you'll get. I choose to join Federal Cops because it's easily shortest. First of all it skips rest of the quests on Mars and after that it goes almost straight to the last battle on Secreta HQ.

One question about the rules on SDA. During last battle on Secreta HQ against four Pillars (mini-bosses) I first kill two of them and then go to main menu and click on Play Campaign, basically this loads last auto-save to teleport me closer to last two Pillars saving maybe 1-2 minutes but more importantly it resets all enemies on the map (excluding Pillars) which makes it possible to survive the last battle at so low level. Is this allowed on single-segment run? Because I'm not interested in doing segmented run of this game since there's no manual saves in this game and auto-save is way too unreliable to do a segmented run (sometimes it doesn't save progress and throws you back in mission progress).

So does anyone know more sequence breaks or any glitches that would be useful for speedrun?

And have anyone done more testing on Power Conversion skill? My original plan was to get that skill right after New Eden but it seems like the skill is bugged. Requirements to buy this skill are Hacking 36, Endurance 35 and you need to research Vitality Converter, but when you buy it and use it, it does nothing. Only solution I have found so far is to buy also Dermal Shealth but this skill costs way too much to get on my current route. Power Conversion skill would save maybe minutes on my route and it would make it possible to survive the last battle on Secreta HQ without loading last auto-save.

Oh, cool. I enjoyed this game and thought a little about what speedrunning it would involve.

Since the game autosaves everything online, I don't think it's possible to do a segmented run. So the options are NG or NG+ (which would require a lot of preparation). As for difficulty, I would recommend easiest, but I suppose default would be OK too. Hardest would be kind of crazy.

Given the weird way the campaign is handled, exiting and relaunching a mission is probably OK. It might count as SS with resets though, so you should probably ask here: http://forum.speeddemosarchive.com/post/single_segment_with_resets_now_accepted.html. You could also accomplish the same thing by killing yourself though, right?

You seem to have found all the shortcuts I know about, but I'll let you know if I find anything else. Sadly, killing Rimanah or other major characters in the HQ doesn't seem to accomplish anything before the final mission.

To move fast, it seems like you'd want to dump as many points as possible into agility, although some endurance would be helpful for survival and stamina recharge. Ideally, use light armor and lightweight equipment whenever possible to avoid encumbrance and the need to invest in strength. One of the heavy pistols is a good choice for missions where you don't have to kill many enemies. Cloak could be key when there are lots of enemies, and it might be worth unlocking some weapons, but you want to spend money on upgrading cyber legs as much as possible.

Also, I noticed that the stats you can get during character creation are very random. The traits you pick influence them, obviously, but you can get results that are much better or worse than average in terms of total points. So it's probably worth taking some time to reroll until you get nice values in the stats you care about.

Some of the low level research items, especially the medkit, might be useful, but the later ones are probably not worth it.

Power Conversion always worked for me, but maybe you need a certain amount of health to use it? Without upgrading the cybertech that improves it, it isn't very efficient. But if you keep the medkit out and constantly recharging to recover the health, then the extra energy could be good.

For the final fights, you definitely want to kill the pillars before they can create clones. The heavy sniper rifle or an instant kill psi power seem to be the best, but you could cloak and backstab them if necessary. I'm not sure about the final room since I think you need to kill everyone. I haven't used grenades much, would they be effective? I know the grenade launcher is pretty good, but probably too expensive/ too high requirements.

Good luck. I'm looking forward to seeing some practice runs.
Actually losing all HP in this game only puts you into coma and if you have any resurrectors left you wake up few seconds later in the same spot. Because I should have all 9 resurrectors left when I start battle against Pillars I would need to fall into coma 10 times before getting back to starting point of the map. I think choices are trying to run past all the enemies keeping it SS run or what I'd like to do and make it into SS with resets.

In character creation I choose to all three gene slots the one that gives bonus to strength, endurance and agility. And as you said, stats are very random. Usually those three stats end up being anything between 40 and 50 and on one test run I got 61 endurance. If it's somehow possible to manipulate all of those three stats close to 60 it would make a difference to the run. Usually I reroll until I get agi 50+, str and end 45+ and hacking 15+ so I can get hack to 30 to buy the Cloak. I sure hope official timing start when you press Accept Character and gain movement so it's not needed to reset every time if you don't get perfect stats without rerolling.

I noticed that I used way too much medium armor on my 52:53 test run and it seems that I can save almost minute by using more light armor which shouldn't be too big problem. What comes to weapons, I pick up Black Crow on start of tutorial just to kill the looters at the end of tutorial. Then I pick that first assault rifle from armory as soon as I need to start killing enemies. After that I try to keep chancing weapons at minimum because it takes so much time to change weapons at the armory and only change I make is on Mars when I drop the assault rifle and take the heavy sniper rifle since it kills Deus Ex Machinas with two headshots and there is one of these enemies that I must kill to survive. Pillars and rest I kill by getting next to them with Cloak and then one hit killing them with Damocles, that sword seems to kill even Rimanah with one backstab. On one of my test runs I got Grenade Launcher so I could test it on Pillars but found out how ridiculously effective that Dermal Shealth armor, which most end game enemies have, is against explosives. Half minute of grenades to one of the Pillars and it did nothing so I decided to stick with the Damocles.

That last room where Rimanah is will be a little random because what triggers the end for the quest is to kill Rimanah and his bodyguards. Either of them clones doesn't need to be killed. So far I have done this room by getting behind Rimanah cloaked and kill him with backstab so he can't make clones but as soon as Rimanah's bodyguards see me they make clones and after that it's about luck how fast you can kill real enemies while ignoring clones.

Only research that I'm planning to do is to start Medkit research at the end of tutorial so I'll get it during New Eden. Medkit is pretty much must have since I'm running past so many enemies. Rest of my money, after Medkit research and buying Cloak, I have used to CyberTech upgrades. For now I have first bought Eyes to decrease energy cost to use Cloak and after that Arms to make sure I have enough strength to one hit kill end game bosses but you're most likely right and I should use that money to Legs upgrade instead for running speed. I never thought about buying Legs because they cost 32k which is much more than Eyes and Arms together but from what I now tested it seems I can barely afford Legs at start of battle against Pillars. I need to test how much that Legs upgrade saves time during rest of the game to decide if it's better than those other two upgrades.

What do you think about hacking system? I've been trying to find fast and reliable way to beat the hacking mini games and so far I usually start with overflow to get high attack points to win with one or two attacks. This seems to be fast but since overflow also decreases defense points it easily ends up losing the mini game and I think that's reset on serious run since it costs so much time.
Even if you have resurrectors, you can kill yourself by jumping into a bottomless pit. But I think that resetting is probably fine. It seems to be an intended game strategy for exiting missions.

Have you tried Substitution Gate? I haven't played the Federal branch yet, so I don't know if you have to go out of your way to get it or how effective it is. But from the description on the wiki, it seems like it might be useful for the boss fights at least. I think it should be possible to kill the Pillars with one headshot from the TRK, since stats don't seem to directly affect gun damage. I think there are some convenient armories to switch it in and out, so it might be faster than sneaking up on them.

The most reliable strategy for hacking is to spam Mask until their attack is 0 and keep it there once they start using overflow. Then when you start attacking they'll have attack and defense 0 and you'll still have some. But this is slow, so against enemies around your hacking level or lower, you can probably Scan their defense away and then attack until you win.

I've been doing some testing to see which objectives are required and what the best choices to make are.

-The Cave: Just make it out alive.

-New Eden (lower): Don't talk, just run through the big building to the left of the intersection, hitting the console on the way, and climb up the ladder.

-New Eden (main): Talk to your mentor, say you'll kill the leader (I think this is the fastest, but maybe you should check the others). Go kill him and go back to your mentor. Go get the Cyberbrain and bring it back to your mentor. Go to the bar and kill the bartender, then go to the appartment and find the case. Sometimes it's easy, but sometimes it's well hidden and it helps to hack a computer to get the location.

-Looter HQ: Kill the door guards, maybe throw the turrets over the ledge. Go to the opposite side of the room and down one level and you should be able to hack the door control (you have to be within 25 m). Kill the leader. Alternately, maybe you could position the turrets facing the door, then hack the security system and the door control and get them to kill him?

-Altioch: I'm not completely certain, but it seems like all the objectives are required. In that case, use the console, kill the leader in the bar to the right, kill the Federal officer in the building to the left and snipe the guy down below. Return to the console. Use the console in the sewer access, plant the bombs, and assassinate the final guy on the lower level.

-Sulaco: Talk to Dutch (or the door won't open), then kill him and take the charges. Hack the inner door. Run through to the elevator, then run to the room where you plant the charges.

-Mars: Run all the way to the buildings past the dig site, hack the door and go with the Federal officer.

-Federal cruiser: Kill some of the people (I'm not sure exactly who needs to die, but probably at least the leader and Cyrus), then use the switch at the bottom of the shaft in the middle of the bridge. This takes you directly to the final mission.

-Temple HQ: Kill your mentor (I recommend the TRK sniper, since there's an armory right next to you). Talk to the scrab and you get Triangular Gate, which instantly kills any human enemy. Kill the pillars. If you do it in the right order, I'm not sure reloading really helps. Apparently I was wrong about suicide, it actually restarts the mission. First kill the one in the archives, then the one past there (the room where you start on the first visit). Then reload if it helps. There are some precedents for allowing reverting to checkpoints in other games. Then kill the pillar in the training room, then the one near the path to Rimanah. If you approach with cloak on and kill them from a distance with Triangular Gate or the sniper, it shouldn't be too tough to get away. If you can get away and hide briefly, remember that crouching speeds up your energy recharge. Similar tactics work on Rimanah and his guards. Use cloak to get to a position where only one can see you, take him out and cloak again and you won't have to deal with clones.

On New Eden (main) I have tried all the three choices for first quest and I think too that killing the leader is fastest. Case that ends the mission I have seen on several different spots and this will cause lots of restarts because I want it to be on spot that is most close to way you come from.

On looter HQ I usually take few turrets out with grenades while I'm going to the door control, note that looters don't attack you even if you destroy their turrets. And when I'm at the range for hacking I throw my last grenade to the boss door taking out some of the looters and then hack the door control. It might be also possible to kill the leader with grenade from lower area but I don't think this is reliable enough to be done on SS run.

Altioch I have done this way. Use console, go to building on left, turn to staircase on right and hack transcom, return to console and rest is same.

Federal cruiser and Temple HQ sounds far more faster the way you do them so I need to learn them the new way. And it probably won't be necessary to reload the game to get back to start.

I use crouching to recharge energy almost all the time when it's possible, like when talking to NPCs and while using armory. That probably doesn't make huge difference but I'd like to see that on serious run because I don't think there's a reason to not do that.
Sounds good. I'm looking forward to seeing a test run.
Is bunny hop working in this game ?
At first I thought that landing actually slowed you down, but it seems not, at least on a flat surface. I wasn't able to gain any speed, but maybe someone who's run other Source games could test it. Still, it's probably a moot point because jumping costs a lot more energy than sprinting.
Me and my friends did some single segment 3 player co-op runs on very easy. From first spawning in the cave to the result screen in the final mission it took us 29 minutes. The run relies heavily on getting agility/endurance/strength/whatever to level 120 by having the host kill his internet for a few seconds, allowing the other two players to level up as many times as they wish until the connection is re-established.
That sounds like a fun run. Is it recorded? Are you planning to submit or improve it?
We were only messing around a little, did like three runs and the 29 minute one is not that good so no recording. We'll probably look into recording demos or at least I'll stream my point of view at some point. As far as submitting goes, still a far away from it I think. The route might be improvable (hell if I know, I don't undestand this game I just do what I'm told) And we might get a fourth player to join, should make the last level a bit easier. And the whole unplugging the ethernet cable thing is a bit shady we're not sure if that's even allowed for SDA.
It's been a while since I've played, but I'm fairly sure SepiSova and I worked out the best strategy for each mission a few posts up.

I don't like games requiring you to play online, so I think it's cool you found a way to take advantage of it. But I guess it would be good to get an official ruling on that trick.
Most of the time is saved by having three people do different objectives in the missions. Also we do the Looter HQ by hacking one of the people inside the looter boss room and kill the boss with him. That way you get the escape objective immediately and you don't actually have to do anything in the mission.

Since I'm hosting the game, I mostly just sit around at the mission start and talk to consoles, mentor or whatever. Since I'm the host, I can't cheat my attributes and I just have pretty much whatever I start with. My main function is to pull the cable when it's needed, rest of the time I don't really do anything productive because the other people can run so much faster.
Here's a bad run we did today:

36 minutes, everything was bad but whatever.

Has there been any action on this lately? I think this would be a fun game to run, ANY% Single Segment. Not sure about trying to go through the hassle of doing a co-op ANY% SS run, though.
