I've been a very casual speed runner for a few months now. Lurking the SDA and SRL vids and streams to learn tricks and such for my favorite games.

After playing through Dust: An Elysian Tail i found it to be a lot of fun, and could be fun to speedrun as well. This will be my first attempt at taking a game seriously. I have only seen one very choppy video on youtube of an attempted run. So this will most likely be my catalog of tricks, glitches, and routes. I'm aiming for an Any% run at first. Possibly going for 117% runs after if i can get a good time for Any%.

Tricks:
Crouch Slash Cancels - Dust's crouch slash can cancel some animations, and you can cancel the animation of the crouch slash as well. During his A string if you quickly hit d.X you can start a new string almost immediately after the animation starts. This is helpful for taking on large groups of enemies at a barrier if you get surrounded. Quickly switching between left and right X strings.

You can also use this to increase the speed of his rolling ability. Normally there is a short delay of about a 1/4 of a second at the end of the roll before you can act. But if you crouch slash as you land you can act much sooner.

Destructible Barrier Bypass - I'm not entirely sure how it works, but you can slip through at the top of destructible barriers. (the big rocks) This could be used to save a lot of time at yellow barriers if I (or anyone else) can figure out how to do it consistently.

RA clipping - Once you have the double jump, if you press roll then jump right after Dust will keep the momentum from the roll as he jumps allowing him to move out of bounds in certain areas. (may be possible up any slanted surface. Not 100% sure yet). This also becomes much faster to RA into aerial dust storm for movement. Rather than Roll and crouch clash cancel.

Rising Dust Storm - This is widely known already. If you aerial dust storm into a wall he cancels all animation. You can slash twice to gain height (X, X) and dust storm back into the wall. Repeating this lets you gain height slowly and access areas early. You can also do this in the air by canceling Aerial dust storm with (X, X) string to maintain height.

Rising Downward Slash Stuff - Dust's d.Y attack in the air rises in into the air when done. With the double jump you can cancel this animation to gain some extra height. This move also has 0 lag when it lands. What this allows you to do is as you jump up platforms that you can pass through very quickly. If you hit d.Y just under the collision surface for the platform you will rise and land with 0 lag. Making jumping up certain sections of the game very fast.

Current route:
From the start it is a mad dash to the Giant fight outside aurora villiage. I'm not worried about getting any experience because you can get a lot in aurora villiage accepting quests from the towns people. They are along the way and you can skip all the dialogue making it much faster to do this than waste time fighting monsters. Before getting aerial dust storm it is difficult to make it to the edge of an area before monsters catch up. After getting the aerial dust storm I just use the to fly across the level using fidget's attack to gain a high combo chain for experience as i progress. My goal is to reach level 4 and max attack by the time i get to Fuse. After making it to the forest there are a few areas that you can aerial dust storm strait through at a high speed. Because it pulls you towards enemies you can use that to gain a lot of upward momentum skipping a lot of platforming.

For the Fuse fight, the fastest and most reliable way i've found to kill him is to start the fight with X, Y, X, X, X, Y. This will preform dust's air grab slamming him into the ground. As you bounce I slowly tap X, X, X to float to where Fuse lands. As he stands up I should be able to just grab him with the air grab before he can act. I've tried just repeating the opening string but sometimes he jumps away from the first swing. I might just be mistiming it but air grabs just feel more reliable. After the fight there is a dialogue skip. If you go into the next area there will be more dialogue and some enemies you have to defeat in order to get to the bridge above you. But you can reach the platform without having to go to the next area. By jumping then pressing X, X, X, Y, d.Y you can reach the platform and get across the bridge. After that, i buy 2 teleport stones from the shop keep to get back to aurora village without having to backtrack, and have one available for cirromon caverns.

Thats all i have so far and i'm hoping to add a lot more.

Happy Speed Running! ^.^
Thread title:
Looking forward to seeing what will be done in this game. I played the demo and havent personally picked it up yet, my brother has it however, and thought it could be a good game to run. Good luck with everything and can't wait to see if I'll run it and steal your strats Wink
Claimh Happy
I think you mean X, not A. Anyways, glad to see interest in this game. You should pick up the Flak Sheath before Fuse (ill check exactly where it is when I get home) for +50 attack. Surreal_ knows the route better than I do, so you might want to look for him on twitch. Good luck
Hey cool! glad to see someone looking into this.  I enjoyed the game and will support your efforts in any way I can.  I dont know what I could add to your list at this time, but perhaps I'll come up with something.  also, you mentioned any% and 111%.  I never understood what the extra percents were, but the highest is 117%.

You can do the Rising Storm without walls, and with it, skip obtaining Boost Jump, as well as a lot of battles (even if enemies are below you at the edge of a screen transition, if you're really high up with chaining the height gains you'll be able to pass through the barriers and skip a lot of fights). You can also skip a few cannons with this.

I have found the fastest way to stack damage on bosses/individual enemies is usualy the XXYY (or XXXY combo in midair) combo that has you grab an enemy and slam them into the ground.

Some things to note are that you should be using both fidget and your normal attacks at the same time when fighting things (as attacks restore energy). Using health items restores energy, though I don't see it being worth using them for just energy restoration.

Don't use Doenjang Jjigae. It has an untold effect where while you have the x4 defense boost, your attack power is also cut down to 1/4. For health items I'd suggest getting the soups that add attack and hotdogs namely for healing.

For Gaius, jumping above him manipulates him to jump up towards you. While he's in midair he tends to dodge less and have those random invulnerability frames less often, so it's a much quicker way of dealing damage to him.

Some cutscenes can be skipped slightly before the characters actually start talking. It's worth pausing a lot to find the spots where you can skip the cutscenes ASAP.

Collect as many quick keys laying around as is convenient. They make for good money at the end to buy equipment and health items.

Since you can skip a lot of battles with the rising storm, very little grinding is needed throughout the run. Because of this you'll also get very little materials unfortunately, so most equipment will have to be easy to craft or obtained from chests/bought from shops.

There are a few spots where you can use Teleport Stones to save some time instead of backtracking. Sorrowing Meadow is one notable example I can think of.
Mapler - Yea i do mean X, and i fixed it in the OP. To much time playing with a GC controller. lol

For cut scenes you can skip them as soon as the screen starts to blur.

I like the aerial X, X, X, Y string on bosses before Gaius. I'm still going to chain air grabs on him to avoid the random counters he seems to get off.

I can't seem to find the flak sheath before fuse. Do you know where it is?

I'll be streaming sometime in the near future on twitch. So maybe we can get on skype or something sometime to work on routes and tricks surreal. <3

The Flak Sheath is with a recipe, but it only needs 10 of some common material that you should easily have by the time you get to the blacksmith. It's in the chest in Aurora Village that's underground (Underneath where Reed is where you'd enter the caverns).

I don't really think I want to run the game anymore, but if you wanted help with routing or looking into tricks I'd be willing to offer my help. My Skype is Surreal365 if you want to add me.

Hello Everyone, I'm CNDLongshot, or Themonkeyvilians on YT.
So far I think i've got the only Run posted on YT and if it is the one you saw Ostrana, I'm sorry for the crappy quality.

Just so you know, I do my run on casual difficulty to take advantage of a few things.
The main one being the regeneration of Energy, which allows me to technically fly.
I use it alot in my run, but basically its just using Fidget's projectiles to continuously combo an enemy while doing the Arial dust storm.
you will gain alot of height and can traverse across a screen very quickly.

I'm still working on doing a better route and boss fights, but I know that I can save at least 11 minutes on my run as is.
For those who don't know, My run is done in 2:31:42.
Hope to see more people get into this or just to see what can be abused in order to make the game completed much faster.
I love this game, and pretty much mention it to everyone that i know who has an 360.

(added note) got my time down to 2:16:44 the other day, will work on getting it up on YT.
I just Uploaded my 2:16:44 run of dust one YT. Plz give some feedback if you can, maybe something to help me achieve my goal of Sub 2 hours
Very cool. I'll give it a watch when i get a chance. I've been busy with christmas plans and personal stuff. I really want to start streaming and doing some actual practice after x-mas. I'm sure we can have a lot of fun optimizing a run. Cheesy

If you have a skype name PM it to me and we can skype sometime to talk about the game.

I'll be doing all of my runs on normal difficulty because i feel like that is the way the game was intended to be played and the baseline for skill level. (go go run on sentences!)

Kanzen shouryuu cha!
While I know this thread is fairly old, bumping it is probably the best option.

I recently got Dust, and as soon as I started playing it, I knew that I was going to be wanting to run it. I've only done a few runs, one streamed, one not, with the latter being my fastest time so far. I didn't want the one that I streamed to be my best time, considering that my shoddy internet decided to go in and out a bit while I was streaming losing parts of the run.

So, here is my most recent run. It's single segment, casual difficulty Any%, and the final time was 1:42:05 by my count.

If there's any questions on my methods or tactics, feel free to ask!

Used a bomb to get to lady boss quicker.
Anyone have any ideas for 4 mansions? so much backtracking in that area from quest item to quest item.

Now we're talking!

Simply skipping blacksmith, etc saves a good chunk of time, and that bomb for early Tethis? Brilliant.

As for the 4 mansions, there definitely doesn't seem to be too much there that we can do, considering all four are needed. I've been trying to find any ways to clip through the world like what was able to be done on the pre-patch console versions, but nothing easily reproducible aside from the platforms that take you slightly through the ground in the mountains.

Gonna go do a run quick and see what kind of numbers I can pull with those strats, and maybe a couple new ideas of my own. Glad to see others are playing with this now that we've got the PC release!

Post run Edit:

Okay, so I just dd a run with some of your strats as well as trying a few of my own that didn't work out, unfortunately. Ended up getting a final time of 1:32:22, including a messed up early Tethis bomb, as I had to do it twice. I feel like I could have come close to your time if I hadn't tried my strats and had gotten first try early Tethis, but that's mainly just going to be getting down proper movement and efficient routing.

Curious what are the rules for doing the run? Is allowing mode swap for more damage allowed? This would save time since you don't need to reach level 14 for optimal damage, only 4 and 8 (attack/fidget).

I've been thinking about picking this game up to run ever since it came out on XBLA. I don't have the Steam version (yet), though.
Are there any differences known about the 2 versions? I assume loading times will likely be different at the very least.
Currently playing on 1.01 in case any glitches were patched, 1.02 was a stability patch and 1.03 is treasure box/cage openning bug and quest indicators not showing up for PC version. Other than that I don't know of any variances between the two.
http://steamcommunity.com/app/236090/discussions/0/828939978625498278/
Kanzen shouryuu cha!
The differences between the Steam and the XBLA version are little to none. The only difference I know of off hand, is that on the Steam version when you go to skip a cutscene, skip is the option above what you start out on in that little menu. On the XBLA version you immediately start on the skip option.

And rules? Complete the game in the quickest time possible. If you want to switch difficulties at different points to make things go faster, feel free, just know that it might not always save you time.

Changed some more things
First chest in sorrowing meadows gives you a 60 attack necklace. Pretty much a free level making bosses faster to kill.
Bought extra teleport stones and have an actual route for 4 mansions. First get the teleport point/exit at the right.
Bottom Right->Teleport, Top Right -> Teleport, Bottom Left, Top Left->Teleport->Kane.
Using extra teleport stones for mansions saves about 1-3 minutes depending on your luck.

Also when going to the bottom left you can grab the  3 bomb near the hornet nest by just standing on the cliff side, first wave destroys nest, second carry the bombs out.
For Moonblood camp area, going to the scouts if you hug the ceiling you can skip a conversation. Same idea with the second cannon, hugging the ceiling will let you fly through without any cannon shots being fired in that room.
A 1:10 should be possible with this route with gppd RMG from the first cannon and a perfect gaius fight, also given less movement errors and problems leaving rooms (IE Dragons in Abadis forest, room 2/3 and bridge)
Count me in as a Dust speedrunner. I loved this game from the moment I started playing it.

That said, I'm watching some of these runs and I'm baffled as to how you folks are accomplishing the "Rising Dust Storm" trick when not next to walls. Anyone have any tips about the button timing here? I'm playing on the PC, but using an Xbox controller.
Kanzen shouryuu cha!
The timing isn't too specific, but it IS a very set rhythm. Just tap each button in succession, so X X Y, and only tap the Y, so you don't go for any length of time longer than you want, and as soon as the Dust Storm is done, start the sequence over again.

Okay, I managed to figure it out, and I'll have to practice it a bit, but it turns out to be fairly straightforward. For the sake of anybody who is as bad as I am, here's the strats I figured out:

Along walls: jump into the air near the wall, face it and hit Y. As you hit the wall, turn away and press X. Keep alternating rather quickly between toward+Y and away+X, as you scale the wall. It should feel pretty rhythmic as you go, like a fast beat. Just keep alternating at a constant, fast pace and it should work out.

Away from walls: jump into the air. Press X for about one moment, then press X and immediately slide to Y. When you do it right, the second X and Y feel like one smooth movement, so that you're alternating between X and X+Y. Your character's direction is not really important at any point here; you can switch between left and right in between X presses or during the X+Y or after the Y. Or you can just do it in one continuous direction, as in the Cirromon Caverns skip. The timing is important here in that you need to pause slightly between each movement, but not too long.

(edit) Fixed an error in the controls above.

Completed my first decent any% run after learning the Rising Dust Storm. It came out at 1:43:24, you can watch it here if you're curious: http://www.twitch.tv/vulajin/c/2383185 (Note: contains my slightly profane commentary, if that matters to anyone. :x )

I was thinking about a minor quibble on the timing. It looks like the runs so far have been timing until the last hit on General Gaius. However, there's technically about 30 seconds of player control after that. Shouldn't we instead be timing until the instant your hand touches his? This seems like it would fit the SDA timing model a little more accurately.
Kanzen shouryuu cha!
Yes, it would fit the SDA timing better, but think about it. At what point are you going to be going any slower after the final hit? If you hold right after that final hit, it's going to be the same amount of time regardless. The only reason other than that for myself was that Longshot's run ended on that last hit. If we all agree to changing the timing of it, I'm all for it though. It's not the biggest of deals.

There are a few other things I have noticed, when using 1.2x Damage food it applies to all damage dealt by you. So bombs in causal will normally do 1500, now will do 1800. Also the food timer stacks, every use is +15s so ideally each fight phase for Gaius should be around 45-1min so use them accordingly.

Bomb Damage:
Casual 1500 -> 1800
Normal 1200 -> 1440
Tough 900 -> 1080
Hardcore 600 -> 720

There's also a bug that you can use skip the cut scene that shows the scenery for each major points in the game.
List of known areas that it should work.
Start of game - Room 2
Entering Aurora Village
Caverns - Room 3
Entering Mudpot
Sorrowing Meadows - Room 2
Mountains - Room 2
Enter Battlefields

Since each scene is about 15s, that's 1:45 saved if done consistently.

This requires you to do the dodge cancel incorrectly and it feels to be about 1-2 frames to do it. You'll notice it in the 1:18 run I have above at 1:07:05. It might be easier to do it on a slower machine.
I'll practice it today to find a more consistent way to do it with/without dodge. Ideally it's Dodge->Attack in the dodging direction. So example here would be dodge right, turn right attack. So when Dust attacks his hitbox would move back slightly which would bring you to the last room.

If someone needs saves for practice, here are mine. https://www.dropbox.com/s/nu6udtrtny8g15k/Player1.7z

Thanks, Ogam, I'll bet those are going to come in super handy.

I have an early version of a route for 117%, and it's pretty fun. It seems like a good run will probably run around the 3-hour mark, but so far I've only run through it twice (my second run being around 4:30), so I can't say for sure. There's a lot of bits that are still in flux, including when to hit vendors and getting all the materials farmed without having to waste a bunch of time at the end of game.

For reference, the 117% category consists of the following objectives:

1) All maps fully explored (this can't be completed until you visit the save+vendor room right before Gaius).
2) All keys in the game world obtained.
3) All chests opened.
4) All 12 cages opened and friends obtained.
5) All power-ups (e.g. ground slide) obtained.
6) All notes obtained.
7) All quests complete.
8) At least 41/42 materials catalogued.

In order to open all the chests and cages, you will need to purchase exactly 2 keys from a vendor at some point. The remaining 4 are optional, but could be useful early in a run to reduce later required backtracking. (I have not made a determination on whether to pick up any of the extras for my route yet.) Also, for some reason you get credit for material completion once you hit 41 materials, even though there are 42 possible. I like this, because item farming sucks a lot.

Depending on my luck with Pokémon Black this weekend, I may get around to doing a first 117% run on Saturday or Sunday. If so, I'll be sure to share the video here.

(edit) Just as an aside - I find the 117% run a little more satisfying, since it involves a little more gameplay and allows you to pick up all the power-ups.
