Frisbee Grenadier
A straight-forward fun action game that should make good-speed run fodder.

The tournaments are obviously key to getting the best time. Unfortunately, I have no way to record a run of this, at the moment.
Thread title:
ORLY?
Ugh...I was going to do a speed run of this, but thats okay if you beat me to is since I'm already working on Buu's Furry I would never be able to do it.
Frisbee Grenadier
I'm unsure if I would do it, as I still lack a way to record it.
DB Advanced Adventures rocks, go for it! But be fair about it, it's obvious that the game is a fun beat-'em-up-er that anyone can beat in a fairly short period of time. If you're gonna do it then try something like: hardest difficulty, 100% completion and single segment. If you think that's a bit over your head then perhaps you can do it segmented but keep the 100% completion, or take the 100% completion out and do it single segment, but the hardest difficulty really should be a must for this game so that'd it'd be an entertaining and challenging speed run.

That sucks, I have the same problem, I'd love to do some GBA speed runs but I have no way of recording my game play. I really wish that SDA would accept speed runs on emulators :/, but there are too many things the emulator is capable of that would be considered cheating, and no way to verify whether you cheated or not.
I remember watching the TAS, perhaps it will give you some strategy tips:  http://tasvideos.org/368M.html

As for the game itself, I do not know much about it, but I do like the storyline.  The only advice I can give you is... Lose to Tao :P.

Anothergamer (the author of the TAS) frequents the #nesvideos IRC channel.  He's a bit abrasive at times, so he may be unwilling to help, but just keep bothering him.
Bring me the flaming voodoo canonball!
If only the 60euro price for the GBA Player dropped to like 20euro.....
Then I could have done a lot of GBA games (GS:TLA, MMBN1-6, Zelda 4S). Oh well.....

I don't have bittorrent or a japanese rom of DBAA. Couldn't watch the TAS :/

As for the game, you pick up tricks easily. I played a little not to long ago and already had all sorts of neat tricks to get through certain areas and defeating certain enemies or groups of enemies quickly. And although it's part of the story, and you're SUPPOSED to lose to Tao and Piccolo the first time you fight them, you could still beat them in the battle if you like, though the story will say you lost.

I think watching anothergamer's TAS would be enough, if I could ever see it (which involves getting a japanese DBAA rom, I believe).
I'd leave Anothergamer a message via irc, or pm, or you could post something in that topic (under discuss this movie from that link I gave).  He might have an avi somewhere, although I doubt that.  I don't have the avi anymore :(.

Ah, that's fine.

Anyway, I made my own little video. It's kind of a crappy speed run for the intro level of DBAA. The difficulty is set to hard and I die once in the third stage and use a life to restart, though I cut that part out. You could say the clip is segmented then, though I did do it in one 6 min sitting. Anyway, my time of 4 minutes flat, from "GO!" to "Area Cleared!" (time includes the small scene before boss fight), will serve as a bar for some analysis. Here's the clip btw:

I'll start off with the obvious: I loss some precious time jumping around trying to hit the pterodactyls. I haven't really figured out a way around this yet, their flight pattern is as predictable as it is random. My main problem seems to be timing the air kick, rod slam (^+A,A) combo when they go down to dive. Though even getting this won't take them out cause they need three hits to go down. It seems easier just to jump three times and rod slam them three times, yet I don't think it's really the fastest to take them out.

Second is while I can run through most of the enemies some have better reflexes and anticipate me coming. One part which I don't get right in the video is jumping over a couple of wolfs in stage three, and instead getting hit. I find it's just that I forget to jump, since the right time is before the wolf shows up on the screen and I can't rely on my reflexes for it, but rather my memory... which apparently is bad ;(

Besides those things there is some sloppy fighting on my part in a few of the "!" sections, I think the majority of time "wasted" is in these sections. The same enemies don't always come from the same sides and so I have no "set" battle plan for these, just gotta improvise... though I could probably improvise better. I don't think taking all of them out with the generic dash,A,A,A,A,A combo is the most efficient thing to do either. Goku has a grab combo and rod spin combo in his arsenal but I don't know the exact buttons to do those o.o, so if anyone knows, tell me, it'd probably save some time.

Also, if I lost less health I wouldn't have had to restart (saving 30-45 seconds if I had included it in the video) or grab the turkey in stage three (saving 2-3 seconds). This directly correlates to how I take on the "!" sections.

All in all I think 20 seconds, if not more, can be shaved off my intro level run. Doing the intro level from "GO!" to "Area Cleared!" in under 3:40 (including the small scene before boss fight) would be a pretty good time I think.
I SAW THE TAS! Special thanks to a guest who came across this thread and was kind enough to send me an email providing me with what I needed to see the video. As for the TAS speed run of DBAA: that was the most beautiful thing I have ever seen. He was no less than perfect, literally, the entire freakin time. It was just so inhuman that it is blatantly obvious it's tool-assisted, no one can do a 20-air-kick-combo in 5 seconds. So on a side note, I gained very little from the video actually, because a lot of the stuff he does is simply impractical on a human level. It just wouldn't be possible to get 90+ hit combos on every boss, and perfectly defend, attack, and counter-attack in every VERSUS fight. Hell, it'd even be impossible to go through the later levels completely untouched, too much crap is constantly flying at you from all sides. The video itself has a great entertainment value but it's not a good guide in helping someone prepare to do a non-assisted DBAA speed run, imo.

Never give up!
Hello.  I once tried to do a run of this game, and may have interest in trying again next time I move my Gamecube over to my recording setup (I only have room for two systems in recording and my PC's hooked up to it full-time, so my Gamecube and PS2 have to be switched back and forth on occasion).  I originally planned on doing Hard mode, but after a number of tries I thought I'd best start with Easy mode first.  Never got around to finishing though - I still have problems with the Underwater Cave.

My powerup plan was taking all three ki boosters, the health booster in Underwater Cave (it's the one most on the path), plus one power pole upgrade (I currently use the one in Pilaf's Castle, but would like one that takes less time to get, as the one I use is trapped).

I should note that the TAS's main focus is a high score, not a high speed - despite it BEING fast.

Instead of trying to do the TAS's dive kick combos, what I had in mind for attacking was first doing a five-hit combo, followed by an afterimage special attack (use more than one of these in a row if you want), then the largest combo available.  The most likely exception would be the pterodactyl enemies - those are best served with dive-kick cancels.

And for one-on-one fights, I would use the ki special on the way up from a pursuit attack rather than try to land extra hits - this way I don't pull off a slam by accident.

If someone beats me to actually doing the run, they can go ahead with it, though.

1. Don't practice on Easy and expect to be able to do Hard though, the number of hits you have to do on an enemy to take them out and the damage they do on you differs greatly between Easy and Hard mode. Stuff that would work well in Easy don't necessary work nearly as well in Hard.

2. I've got nothing, and neither does anybody else it seems, but your plan sounds like a good one! Getting a few health boosters is really crucial, especially on Hard, I can't imagine going through the later levels with only 2 bars of health, o.o

3. DBAA has no time limit for levels. Every time you hit an enemy your hi-score raises. Your hi-score never lowers. Enemies re-spawn. Taking all of that into account, if the TAS was really going for hi-score I think it should have just stayed in level one for a couple of hours beating the same pistol-toting, pirate, gangster boars over and over again. I think the TAS was really going for speed, but decided to do it with some flair and style.

4. Sounds good.

5. Don't look at me, I had enough trouble with level one as it was, and even then my time was a kinda slow. I can help out with this run, perhaps with some tips or whatever if it's needed, but I doubt that I'm the one who's gonna do the run in the end.
Never give up!
Technically, most of the health boosts are not very far out of the way.  In Hard, you may be justified getting all 3 - in Easy I don't see that as necessary though.

I'm aware of the differences between Easy and Hard, but I figure that doing a Hard mode run will be impossible if I can't do an Easy mode run.  I'm talking about actually RUN it on Easy - not just practice.  If I stick to doing a Hard mode run eventually, the goal is to work all the way up.

As far as the high-score/high-speed bit - TASVideos has entertainment standards.  Doing what you hint at on this matter would mean the DBAA video would never be accepted.
I found some things that may be quite helpful. Here's a guy who rendered a map of pilaf's castle and underwater cave from DBAA.

pilaf's castle: http://db.gamefaqs.com/portable/gbadvance/file/dragon_ball_advanced_adventure_pilaf_castle.gif

underwater cave: http://db.gamefaqs.com/portable/gbadvance/file/dragon_ball_advanced_adventure_underwater_cave.gif

He also did the "water trial" map but for some reason I don't remember anything like it from DBAA, you can take a look anyway: http://db.gamefaqs.com/portable/gbadvance/file/dragon_ball_advanced_adventure_water_trial.gif
Never give up!
The "water trial" would be the level right after meeting King Piccolo for the first time, I believe.  The level ends with you getting a special item that mostly counts as a health boost.

I will check out those maps, though.
