Title : Dragon Quest RTA Marathon II
Type : Online marathon, no donations
Dates: : April 7, 2016 - April 10, 2016
Schedule : https://horaro.org/dqrta2/schedule
Channel : http://twitch.tv/cleartonic
Overview
This is the official announcement of our second marathon, Dragon Quest RTA Marathon II ! Our marathon last year was successful, where a handful of community members offered the main series of either Dragon Quest (Dragon Warrior) 1 through 9, along with some side titles. This is a community marathon to showcase our hard work and talents into the mostly-English speaking DQRTA community. No donations or fundraising will be handled for this marathon. There will be a few key changes this time:
- Submissions will be open to everyone (more below)
- DQ1-9 won't necessarily be featured with all installments, but rather a mix of whatever DQ games are submitted and what creates a strong schedule
The timeline for this event is above, and we'll plan to hold the marathon some time in late March or early April, which should be well in advance of RPG Limit Break and other main marathons.
Submissions
Submissions will be open via Google submission form. Similar to many other marathons, submissions will include the game title, console version, localization (language), estimate to complete, and any bonus content. Videos and demonstration of skill are especially helpful. No donation incentives, as donations are not handled for this event. Submitters are limited to 3 games, with as many reasonable categories a submitter could offer for each game. Races are welcome. All DQ titles are entitled to submission, including main entries and spinoffs, however the marathon as a whole will be more-so weighted to main series entries.
Game Schedule
Due to the nature of these games typically being long and the commitments needed to perform, scheduling of the marathon dates will take place after games are decided, among the runners who have made it in the marathon. As stated before, we'll try to focus on having a marathon highlighting strong game submissions as opposed to squarely focusing on getting all DQ1-9 featured (but that may still happen).
Entertainment
The below is a copy/paste from last year's marathon- it's still the same this year:
---
Our goal is to provide an entertaining stream that simultaneously focuses on 1) the actual content of the RTA (real time attack) and 2) engaging the viewer.
For 1), various people will help provide commentary about the RTA. Our stream layout will be relatively simple, highlighting the importance of focusing on the RTA.
For 2), we have a few ideas. Although the RTAs are sophisticated at times, there are certainly points where there is "down-time", such as Metal Slime grinding or having to revisit a dungeon after dying to a boss. During these types of down-times, we will attempt to keep the viewers/chat entertained, such as holding Dragon Quest trivia (potentially with small perler prizes or other DQ knick-knacks).
Again, our primary focus is on the actual RTA, but our overall goal is for people to be engaged during the entire marathon.
---
As well, this marathon will aim to focus on the English speaking community, which is a key factor for entertainment for a mostly-Western audience (the two points above). Some of our Japanese friends have been extremely helpful with learning DQRTA, but this marathon will highlight mostly English speakers, regardless of the game language. Of course, some exceptions may occur.
Organization
This time around, I'd be really grateful to get some help from the community. My rough estimate of the manpower to help run the event would be:
- 2-4 "admins" : People who would be willing to answer questions and generally help organize the event, as little or involved as available.
- 2-3 re-streamers : Especially anyone available in a different time zone
- 2 decisions committee members : I will likely choose these individuals, but if you are highly interested and not planning on appearing in the marathon, please let me know via direct message
- 1 layout/artwork specialist : I can certainly do this, but if someone more qualified & willing wants to help, I'm more than happy to delegate
None of these are mutually exclusive, feel free to sign up as two or more of these. And generally, if you want to help out with commentary on any of the games or to help with one-off tasks, I'm happy to hear you out.
Communication
This post serves as a central hub of information, which will be updated over time. However, all communication among runners will be taking place on a Discord server, which will be given to the organizers, runners, commentary and anyone else involved. There will be zero exceptions for communications outside of Discord for those involved with the marathon. Last time, I struggled to communicate with everyone via Twitter, SRL IRC, Twitch and Skype. Discord is free, easy to use and there's no reason to not have it.
Otherwise, general information will be updated in this topic. You can follow me on twitter @cleartonic if you'd like to see updates regarding this marathon, mostly reminders about upcoming deadlines.
Stay tuned for developments, and see you soon!
