edit: Rules document is up: https://goo.gl/9xbm5F Let me know if there's anything strange or just wildly out of sorts about these rules, I'll adjust things as necessary, if deemed necessary.
Hey y'all, we're going to have a DQ1 SNES tournament! ٩(๑òωó๑)۶
DQ1 on SNES is a fairly straightforward run that is fun to race, relatively short (under 2 hours is consistently doable without major catastrophes, and even with some), and makes an excellent way to step into DQ speedruns. I thought a tournament might be a nice way to get some players looking into DQ and show more people just what DQ RTA is about.
We'll be taking signups until August 12th EST, to allow new players time to learn the run (and for me to get myself better organized Kappa).
The tournament proper will begin the next day, August 13th EST.
Signup form is here: http://goo.gl/forms/MUUt4cQvTk4XuObY2
Players will be placed into seeded round robin groups to play matches. Top players in those groups will move on to elimination rounds. The number of entrants to move on from the first round from each group depends on how many entrants we end up with. I'll iron out a proper rules document and schedule soon, and keep things updated here, but as far as some questions you may have already:
Races will be timed and recorded via SRL, and so will be run in accordance with SRL rules. Please keep a local recording if possible to avoid any contention over problems like mid-race internet outages and the like.
Races will be broadcast via Twitch.tv. This is more a note for any Japanese runners that may join us than those who are already using it.
Emulation will be allowed in accordance with SRL rules.
This game's rules allow Turbo controllers. You can set Autofire for buttons from within multiple emulators if you don't have a turbo controller already. If you're interested in having a proper Turbo SFC controller, I would suggest the Asciipad Turbo or the Hori Commander.
Frame-based Silver Harp Metal Slime Hunting is not allowed. We are hoping to catch some new players with this effort, and Silver Harp manipulation is pretty complicated.
Regarding the English patch: I'm a bit torn on this, because I want to facilitate new players and growth however I can, but I am going to say for the purpose of this competition that it is NOT allowed.
1) The game has nearly no meaningful Kanji, and so the characters you need to know to play are not very complex. Drilling myself with a Katakana/Hiragana flash card/mnemonics app taught me to recall basically all of them within a week.
2) The English patch is VERY buggy, and impacts the run in a couple of ways. Not only are you at a fairly significant speed disadvantage due to losing time from the additional intro screen and English text scroll (the initial conversation with the King takes an extra 10 seconds, for example), but there are problems that impact the run further, such as your HP/MP not refilling after beating the final boss. Normally it would, and you would cast Return to head to the end of the game. What if your MP ran out, and you didn't bring a Chimera Wing? The time for this run ends at the end of the credits, not on the final blow on the Dragonlord.
3) Beyond the above, there are as of yet undocumented problems caused by the patch that I just would not want to see happen to anyone. Here is an excellent (but really funny) example of why you wouldn't want to use a translation patch with this game in a match: https://www.twitch.tv/pbrgamer/v/65176297
4) This competition is going to be open to Japanese players from niconicodouga as well. I don't particularly want to confuse anyone that is coming to Twitch to play with us from nico with a weird, buggy English version of a game that never released in English.
So all that being said, friends of mine have learned this run via playing with the patch first (myself included) and then running it without it. If it helps you learn it, I completely encourage using it as a tool to get used to playing. However, no matches will be played with it.

I promise I'll update this quickly, please feel free to ask me or any of us in the DQRTA Discord (pm me for a link) whatever you need to.
