Hello everybody,

Would anybody be interested in a run of this game?

In case you don't know about this game, it is a puzzle game similar to Dr. Mario.  In this game, beans drop from the top in pairs of two.  To clear them, you have to get at least four of the same colored ones touching each other.  When those are cleared, all of the beans above will drop down, possibly creating combos.  When playing against an opponent, this causes garbage to be dropped (from the top).

The "scenario" mode of this game has you facing 13 opponents in a row, with Dr. Robotnik at the end.

I was ridiculously good at this game back in the day, and I just picked up the Sonic Mega Collection for Gamecube and beat the entire storyline in a very short period of time, losing only twice.  With some work, I could probably get the time of the "scenario" mode down to about 10 minutes on the easiest difficulty setting.
Thread title:
definitely would be interested in seeing this. always used to scare the crap out of me when i got to whatever the guy is who plays very quickly.

I always died a LOT when one of my sister's friends passed me the Mega Collection for a week or so. I really sucked at it...

A run of this game would be very entertaining, though, especially at the hardest difficulty level (like almost any game, really).

And I caught a peek of a phrase you were going to start, but you apparently edited it out. What was it? Was it important? Does it matter? Why do I bother asking these questions? Why don't I feel pretty )':?

A run on any difficulty higher than easy will be certain to have losses.  And it would take a lot of practice and luck to beat it on easy without losing at all.

That first run on the Mega Collection that I mentioned was a fluke - doing that again will take a lot of work.
Killer Chobocos don't get any chocolate.
I can't beat the third guy by T-dropping (for anyone who remembers Super FlyBlocks or JellyBeean Factory)

Good Luck

I'm a big fan of this game (it has 'clones' called Puyo Pop and Kirby's Avalanche) and was rather good at it back in the day... I managed to complete it on the hardest difficulty, but not without many restarts, mostly on Spike, Sir Ffuzy-fface and Robotnik of course.
Would there be any objection to doing this using the Sonic Mega Collection?  It appears to run exactly the same as the original Genesis game (can someone confirm this?), but it wouldn't be too hard to find a Genesis and this game if necessary.
no problem with doing that afaik.
Now a hit show on the CW
There wouldn't be anything wrong with using the Mega Collection version. Worst case scenario, it would be tracked seperately from a run done on the Genesis, but it would still be accepted.

I look forward to the run. There's a TAS of Kirby's Avalanche (it's exactly the same game, just with Kirby characters instead of Sonic) on Bisqwit's site, but I don't know how helpful that would be to look at since it involves extreme luck manipulation. Anyway, I wish you luck... I don't think I ever managed to beat the game without using a continue (or two... or three). If you can pull it off, I'd be extremely impressed.

Here's the older topic on Kirby's Avalanche, which as mentioned earlier is pretty much the same damn game. There isn't a whole lot of tips or anything that I could see at all, but there are videos. The links might have expired though; I don't know whether the file service used expires files after time.

My links are gone.  Oh well.  I haven't played this game in a while.  I dunno if I'll get a chance to do it this summer, or not.

I am pretty good at this game, though... I've been playing puyo puyo fever on my friends comp recently too.

OK, you I've done another test run, and unfortunately, I died at the last moment.

I think my time would have been 13 minutes or something....

http://rapidshare.de/files/14233120/dk.smv.html

I'm very rusty, but maybe I'll persuade myself to get back into shape.

Can someone help me convert frames into seconds?  Do you just divide by 60?

Like, I can display the number of frames my movie is in SNES9x, this movie had 47383 frames.  Does that mean the movie is about 13 minutes?

EDIT 2:

Tried again!  Did much better:  the time was 40000 frames, or 11:20 seconds, if I did my calculations correctly.

Tell me what you think, please!

Note, I know I can't prove it, but these SMVs were done without save-states and re-recording.  I just wanted to show you guys what I'm capable of doing.
that calculation should be accurate.
Hmmm... can't get the files to work.  But I bet I could get that time even faster.  I'll start working on it soon.
Lol, this was a legend of a game......

Wish you luck with the run Wink

What's wrong with the file?  You play it in SNES9x.  I used V1.0 USA for the game...

Is anyone else having a problem viewing the run?

Good luck on your run, I'd like to see some competition. Smiley

Can someone verify that my file works please! Smiley

Thanks.
You got a deletion wish?

I have a clone of it on my Mac called Candy Crisis (formerly called Skittles 2).  Wish I could extract one of the music tracks from it though, the second level music is my favorite.
Well, I did a practice run last night, and I lost 3 times.  I didn't time it, but all of the battles were about a minute long or just a little longer - I'll need to get those times faster.  My time was probably around 15 minutes.  My personal record for Dr. Robotnik is about 20 seconds, which I did long ago on my old Genesis.  Hopefully I can do that a few times on my official run.

I might switch over to the original Genesis version because I'm having some trouble with the controller.  It seems that the Gamecube's D-pad is much too sensitive, and sometimes when I'm trying to slam a piece down, I'm accidentally pressing left or right as well as down, which means that the piece goes flying across the screen and gets put somewhere that I didn't want it.  I don't remember this happening on the Genesis version, so either the Genesis D-pad is much less sensitive, or the Gamecube's is way too small.

That would be it. That thing is just not meant as a primary input. Now, since it sounds like you actually have the original Genesis, and since the sound emulation on Mega Collection sucks bad, I'd say go ahead and use the original version. But if you ever end up running, say, a Game Boy game on the Game Boy Player, there's something called a Hori Pad out there that everyone swears by; it's a GC controller styled after an SNES one, pretty much.

I don't have a genesis, but I know someone who does.  If I do decide to use it, I'll probably have to wait until spring break to do this run.

Otherwise, I'll probably just practice using the Gamecube's controller.  Maybe using the control stick will make it easier.

Edit:  No, the control stick is awful.  But I'm already a lot better with the d-pad.
No comments on the run.  No wonder I abandoned it a few months ago :(.
can also use the hori pad to play sonic mega collection also.

I mentioned that... not noticably enough it seems.
Breakdown of my times in my 40000 frame 11 minute 20 sec run)

Poppy Bros Sr: 35 sec
Whispy Woods: 42 sec (meh)
Kabul: 40 sec
Broom Hatter: 36 sec
Squishy: 35 sec
Lololo and Lalala: 33 sec
Bugzy: 25 sec (owned, makes up for bad WW fight)
Paint Roller: 36 sec
Heavy Mole: 44 sec (can do better, but oh well)
Mr. Shine & Mr. Bright: 25 seconds (best and cleanest fight of the run)
Kracko: 77 seconds (I'm getting nervous and not nailing initial combos)
MetaKnight: 70 sec (very nervous!!!)
King Deedeedee: 34 seconds (it usually is a quick battle)

Total time playing against players: 8 minutes 52 seconds
Average time per fight: 40.923 seconds.
Total game time??  Approx 11 minutes and 20 seconds.

I'm not sure how it compares to mean green bean machine, so I need other people's input.

Do you want me to try to make an AVI?

Yes.
OK, I will.  It's pretty crappy quality, but I think you can see what I do.
