Donkey Kong Country Returns [Wii]

I haven't done as much preparation for a full run as I thought I would have due to being busy recently, but I have my route pretty much finalised now:

Buying keys in worlds 3, 4 and 7.
Buying a banana juice in world 7 to use in 8-1 (6-4 isn't that bad as there are two DK barrels in that level, although I need to be careful after the second one as I need to take 3 intentional hits at the end).

I did a test run of the first 6 worlds to see if I would have enough coins without getting 15 at a finish barrel and I did with a bit of grinding at 3-4 and 4-B.

Some notes I want to put here for future reference:

- For 3-B I think it's better to hit the boss twice at the start even if you could hit him three times as he will always come back to the left (I think) and throw three more bombs. If you're lucky and get three hits, you'll only need to hit him once after the bottom blocks are blown away. Even though this isn't the optimal strategy, it increases the chance of beating him before he starts flying around and wasting loads of time.

- When buying a banana juice and a key, it's faster to buy the juice first and then the key (seems obvious but yeah).

- World 7 is HORRIBLE. World 5 didn't turn out to be as bad as I thought but world 7...

The factory, what a shitty place. Yeah, it can whittle down a good run pretty damn fast x_x Then again so can most of the second half of the game. Tongue

Ok I did a test any% SS run (not recorded) last night just to see how I would get on, and I got a better final time than I expected.

Splits:

9:05.20
20:02.02
29:01.99
37:32.68
48:37.01
1:03:46.63
1:20:42.41
1:34:44.83

None of the splits were spectacular but they are mostly reasonable. There were 8 deaths in total (3-4, 7-5, 7-6 twice, 7-7, 8-6 thrice embarassed

). My luck with the bosses was pretty good overall with only 8-B being bad.

I'm not sure about what a potentially good time would be without deaths yet since I haven't beaten worlds 7 or 8 in one sitting without dying, although this run is the only time I have done all of the world 8 levels consecutively. Getting below 1:30 would be a nice target but I'll need to work on the last two worlds more before knowing whether that is feasible or not.

sub 1:40 is really okay

i think without dying you can sub 1:30 ( that would be awesome :))

i really want to go for it to rival you but i am busy now maybe at march i have time

sooo guys i am now working on any% again i got a 1:43:46 today

i am practicing in the next weeks to beat JXD´s 1:34:44

and hope to get a good run to submit

is anyone working on this game too (crypticjacknife, JXD) ?

No I haven't been working on this game recently as I've been busy and playing other games.

I will go for a serious run when I finally get a capture card though.

I have another video (on 7-6) and I plan to record other levels but I don't want to do a SS run for the moment. I posted 5-2 cause I see that you had many problems to do this level and cause I found another strategy, more easy and better. (sorry for my english, I'm 16 and french).

yeah i had really problems with this level but know i am good at it

but cool if you have more videos and i definitely watch them if you post them

I made too videos on 7-6, 1-2, 7-3 (I post a video everyday). But I didn't found other way on that levels ,maybe on the beginning of 1-2 with the jumps on the birds and in 7-6 at 0,21 on that video:

(I didn't jump on the bird). But I don't know if their ways save time.

Yes, but if a guy make a any% TAS of the game (I wait this day), I think it cans be useful. I watched your any% speedrun and you are very good on this game, but, why do you take the barrels like this? You lose time...

which levels do you mean?, i know sometimes i take the dk barrel and it slow downs ( if you mean this)

but i like the videos keep it up

Yes, you don't take the dk barrel by doing a roll: you slow down, you take and you throw the barrel. I think you can save a lot of time if your learn how take the barrels. I post a video everyday on youtube (but a lot of my speedruns are worse than packattack's times).

Yes, you don't take the dk barrel by doing a roll: you slow down, you take and you throw the barrel. I think you can save a lot of time if your learn how take the barrels. I post a video everyday on youtube (but a lot of my speedruns are worse than packattack's times).

Yes, or if you found a lot of coins near a checkpoint, maybe you can take these coins and die and take the coins etc. to have a lot of coins instead of reap coins in Damp Dungeon.

yeah i will not do this anymore i don´t use a juice in 6-4 so i don´t collect there in damp dungeon

and for 100% and 200% it should be useful to die and collect them again so i try to check this in the following week

I'm finally going to start working on an any% run on this game again very soon (probably later this month) and I hope to get a lot better than my current 1:34:44 run. From the testing I did months ago, sub 1:30 seemed out of reach but I do plan to include faster and more agressive strategies in some levels in future attempts so I can potentially get a bit closer to that sub.

Estimated world splits: 9:05, 11:00, 8:45, 8:30, 11:00, 15:00, 15:00 (activating the buttons wastes a lot of time), 13:00 = 1:31:20

The last two splits may not be accurate due to a lack of testing but in a good run with no deaths I should be able get close to or beat these splits and possibly get below 1:31, so that is my target for the moment.

Nice job on that 5-2 run Rob! Your run made me play this game again to try it out and it is definitely faster and I will be using that in future runs.
