Disruptor Records

---
This is an old school FPS made by Insomniac Games (their first game) back in 1996. I thought that it looked good so I tried it out for the first time today and quickly thought it seems quite suitable for speedrunning. The game doesn't keep track of time, however, so you'll have to do it manually. I start the timing when you can start moving and end it when you lose control. I recorded runs for the first two levels using practice mode (I haven't played through the whole game yet btw):

Mission 1/The Gauntlet in 0:24

Mission 2/Chemical Factory in 0:19 (looks like a high 0:19 to me)

I recommend you to do that first before you start the actual speedrunning.
The game looks pretty cool. Have you figured out any tricks? Does straferunning work?
Yeah, I'll try to finish it this weekend, I think there are 13 levels in total.

Straferunning doesn't seem to work, if you mean that it let you run faster like in Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, or TimeSplitters 1. Haven't found any tricks yet, though I did try a few things and this game might have some potential since it let you jump.
I have this game and it rocks! Gotta love those old PS1 FPS games Smiley
Anyway, I would love to see a run so keep it up!
I've always wanted to try this game as it includes the first version of the technology used in Spyro.
Maybe I'll check it out.

Nice to see there's some interest in this game. Here's a run of the third level called "Rooftops" in 0:46. This was also done in practice mode. The only difference compared to normal mode seem to be that there's a few enemies missing and you'll start the levels without the upgrade to the pistol. Practice mode is only for the first five levels and I simply use it as a fast level select screen really.

Best idea is probably to keep doing individual levels until I feel confident and then start doing SS runs. I also finished the fourth mission and it seemed quite a lot longer than the first three, I think a speedrun will be around 3:30 maybe.

I also found an almost insignificant time saver on the second level when jumping down the escalator thing, but it's probably better to do it like I did in the video because that way is slightly easier.
I can't say that I'm 100% sure, but just by looking at it I think that practice mode seems to be a lot easier than normal mode, so my suggestion would be to play it on normal as soon as you start to get more comfortable with the game.
It's true that the levels tend to get bigger and longer as you progress, some of them could probably take up to 4-5 min to complete (rough estimate, could be wrong).
But then again, there might be some timesavers here and there that would speed things up a bit.

One thing I do remember though is that I ran out of ammo a lot, this game isn't as rewarding with ammo as Doom for an example, so ammo conservation could be something to keep an eye on.

You're right about it being easier, there's definitely a lot more enemies in Normal mode. It's noticeable right away when playing the second and especially the third mission. I just tried running the first four missions in Normal mode and got a 7:30 with a bunch of mistakes (loading times included).

EDIT: Feel a bit stupid because I didn't realize you can go back and play other levels on your saved profile, not knowing that is the number one reason I was playing Practice mode in the first place.

Mission 5 seems pretty easy as long as you don't rush some of the tougher enemies too much and mission 6 was really easy (mostly because you get "Blast" which seems very powerful).
The farthest my nooob FPS skills managed to take this one was ~1hr on Hard... its fun but I don't have the mechanics to not get body blocked on levels like the gauntlet
First six missions in 12:05. I guess 11:3X or so would be good here with the current strats I'm using.

Cool, how's Hard compared to Regular?

If I remember, its roughly double enemies rounding up? so some rooms with 1 have 3 and others with 2 have 5... but in terms of speedrunning it only creates problems on like 3-4 levels, the first has more saws behind doors... ammo is kinda an issue on antartica (I'm learning to manipulate some enemies to let them out before I go through) Io (the mines) in terms of getting thru the elevator section with the black troopers. Prison Break is run by everything they give you all the guns back so you need like 4-5 timed blasts and you should get thru (the platform is really tricky b/c I've had plent of blasts get eaten by the platform themselves.)

Never did get a deathless run of hard, but I think regular is ~40 and hard is 1:00-1:05 if I were giving estimates for an XGDQ. Also if your playing on a PS3 you will get a 2 second lag on Prison Break on hard... you run by so much the game stops trying to load where your about to go, not sure what you can do about that.
Alright, thanks for the info. Antarctica is a pain to speedrun, it's way harder than the earlier levels.

Anyone know a good strat for killing the last boss? He seem to be a pain in the ***.

After playing through the game, I'm thinking it wouldn't be fun (for me) to do SS runs in this game since the difficulty ramps up by A LOT for some of the later levels, I.E. Antarctica, Io, Oribting Habitat and the last level is about 1000 times more diffcult to speedrun well compared to the first half of the game. Seems pretty impossible to speedrun the game the same way as the first half, which is a shame since it looks cooler than having to kill a bunch of enemies slowly to survive. I'm sure you can do very fast runs killing only a few enemies even on Antarctica, but it would certainly require a segmented run, unless you're god at this game (which I'm not). Also, I'm most likely not using the best weapons and powers for certain enemies.

Maybe it would be most fun to do a segmented run like this (still a noob so I'm just guessing what would be most optimal here):

Seg 1 = Gauntlet + Chemical Factory + Rooftops + Jupiter Station + Triton + Mars
Seg 2 = Antarctia
Seg 3 = Io + Reactor
Seg 4 = Orbiting Habitat + Dream + Prison
Seg 5 = Fortress

Just an idea. Doing a segment per level is of course also a good option.

EDIT: Prison in ~1:49. Seems like a pretty good time with my strat.

On second thought, Orbiting Habitat seems pretty easy if you use Terablast at optimal locations. Had a ~1:05 run.
Did a test run of Antarctica and got ~5:50. Played a bit conservative but I think the time would be decent for SS.

I feel like my last post seems a bit exaggerated now but I still think this game is more fun doing individual levels. Io and Fortress seems hardest to me now.
Once you get terablast, the game becomes psi management as ammo is slow and you don't keep what you bring from level to level. The only level thats hard is Antartica because enemy count ramps up and ammo if not managed runs low on hard.

A Segmented run of this game is just IL's anyways, so you wouldn't have to do more than 1 lvl at a time anyways Though Io isn't really all that bad because some of the tunnel bits the enemies can just be straight up avoided.

Levels I remember struggling on hard... Gauntlet (because saws block the way so it depends if I can not step back into another saw slicing me up), Jupiter Station, Antartica, Dream (can get stuck on bad spawns outside, the inner part is easy), and not running out of ammo on Fortress (aka NOT running out for the boss)

Now hopefully my disc still works, I tried another run and my disc froze on rooftops

Thanks for your input, Hsanrb. I hope your disc still works.

Seems like I need to take back everything I wrote about SS not being for me, because after some more practice now I can get through the game fast without dying once, I just did it twice and got (start timer when you get control on Gauntlet, end it when you lose control on Fortress):

34:16
32:51!

Pretty damn happy about that second run. Except for wasting around 10 seconds on Mars because I didn't know where to go and falling down at the last part of Io, most of the levels went well. Obviously conservative on Antarctica but I did beat it in less than six minutes at least.

I got these runs on stream and said during my 34:16 run that sub 30 might be possible, but after getting that 32:51 I'm not too sure about that.

EDIT: Beat it Hard mode now. The levels that I found most annoying compared to regular was Gauntlet, Jupiter Station, Io, Prison and, of course, Fortress. Antarctica went surprisingly well as I beat it on the first try without deaths and I tried doing it quite fast (probably took around eight minutes or so).

A good (but slightly slower) strat for Fortress Hard is to use Drain on the enemies before you teleport to the boss until you have 150. I lured them into the room right before going outside one by one or two by two.
I like it! Can't wait to see the run Smiley

Thanks! I just got this beast of a practice run on stream...

29:58! Man this must've been a sweet run considering I got lost on Mars AGAIN, Triton was kinda bad, and Io sucked a bit too. Antarctica felt bad at the start but it was still like 4:40! I don't know how the heck I've improved so much on that level. Might upload it on YT even though it can definitely be improved in many ways.
thethrillness.blogspot.com
I told you sub 30 was possible. Wink
Thanks for believing in the sub 30, Thrillness. thumbsup

Just had a ~4:05 Antarctica run, sub 4 would be really good. I also realized you only need to push the button in the third room on Reactor if you're fast enough, which shouldn't be much of a problem.

Sub 29, here we go!

Thought I'd finish the rest of the levels available in practice mode so here's Jupiter Station in 2:59 and Triton in 1:17. Pretty good runs but Jupiter especially can always be better.

I'll try some SS runs later and if I get a decent sub 29 run I'll probably share it. IIRC, I failed a ~28:40 last time on stream, screwed up and died at the last boss.

That's a pretty good practice run. By no means perfect; stucks, random stops, and other slowness, but I thought it's good enough to share.

Guess I should consider recording the runs by SDA standards from here on.
Great run! Makes me wanna play the game again, although I probably wont speedrun it (I have the PAL-version and I can tell by just looking at it that NTSC is faster).

By the way, what difficulty is this?

Thanks man! I actually played the PAL version on emulator the other day and yeah, it's definitely a bit slower. A good example is the Reactor strat I use which is either impossible on PAL or require a perfect run to make it to the end in time.

This is the default Regular difficulty.

EDIT: Random thought here btw - I wouldn't be surprised if you can take a bit more damage on PAL because I think I had a bit more health than usual when playing Antarctica and I know a few examples of other FPS games where PAL is sligtly easier.

Antarctica ~3:49! Really nice but I think sub 3:40 is possible with a sick run.
Interesting indeed! Mabye I should give it a shot, at least in a casual way.
