Let the music play!
I couldnt find a topic about this game, and I've been practising running this for the last few weeks, so I think I will start some serious attempts once my S-Video cable arrives.

Anyway, I'm planning a speedrun of Die Hard Trilogy, or at least one of the modes on it - Die Hard With a Vengance. I've also been working on Die Hard, but that has a lot of randomness with it, more so than DHWAV. I wont consider DH2 since it isnt a game that lends itself well to speedrunning. I'll be running it on the Saturn, although the PSX version would be slightly easier to be honest with its password system (I can only save at the start of the next level, and the loading times can be a little long, but I believe they are worse on the PSX).

The main problem when it comes to running DHWAV would be when to use the Turbos. Planning a route that picks up as many turbos as I can get while still getting a fast time would be the ideal thing, but that is only half the problem - when to use the Turbos is the other half, especially with the randomnes of the traffic, I will ideally want a long stretch of road to get the best out of a Turbo use, but that only happens more often in the earlier levels. Another thing to consider is the vehicle changes - the default Taxi only gets an average speed, so obviously I'll want to upgrade that as early as possible, but most of the vehicle changes are out of the way which doesnt help. Later the default sedan you get is a little faster and more responsive imo, but there are still faster vehicles to get.

As for Die Hard, that will be something of a logistical nightmare. I'm not even gonna consider a 100% run (all hostages rescued would likely count towards that, which will also include the execution rescues as well), at least not until I am confident enough to do a normal run, and a single segment is out of the question because it is pretty hard to stay alive if you are rushing. I wish there was a way to skip or speed up the 'rescue the hostages' levels, because they are just big time wasters (the only logical way might be to kill the hostages myself rather than waiting for them to take the time to walk to the helicopter or get gunned down by the terrorists). I only lose bonus points for not rescuing the hostages, which doesnt matter, and you dont actually have to rescue a single one to get through the game - the only requirement is to kill all the enemies on each stage, except on the rooftop levels where the hostages determine the level's length.

And DH2, well, like I said it doesnt lend itself well to speedrunning, like most gun games. Killing the enemies faster obviously gets through each section quicker, so I guess it is possible to speedrun, but it is forced scrolling for the most part. Obviously it would be faster to use the light gun than the control pad, and I have completed it in one sitting before (with the gun) so I know a single-segment run is possible.

I'm close to the end of my Colosseum speedrun, so I'll start on this seriously once I've finished that run.
Thread title:
Oh wow, this is definitely a blast from the past!

I don't think DHer is allowed, with it being a rail shooter and all....

As for DH, don't underestimate the usefulness of the flash grenades, but I can't remember smoke grenades being all that great. I can't really remember a huge deal about it, probably been around 10 years since I played it, but I also seem to remember a side roll. Your default movement action maybe?

(Yeah, you probably already know all this)
Man, I really liked that game...
Almost forgot this game existed, till I read this post.

Would be more then happy to see a speedrun of this.

As for DH2 a.k.a. DHer, I think it might be possible to speedrun it. Because it (sometimes?) swaps to the next sequence if you killed all enemies, so the faster you kill them the faster he walks through it. Not sure how much this can be influenced and if it works as good as it does in Time Crisis (damn that game was also good), but I think it should be doable.

It's a shame I don't really remember any of it as I'm pretty sure I used to know (all) the car spots and routes in the Die Hard game etc.,  but I guess my brain decided to throw all that useful information away. I blame the alcohol.

Glad to see there is some interest in seeing runs of this game :-)

Yeah, you do have a sideways roll. I use it a lot because it is a good and safe way to move into range of an enemy and take them down without being hit yourself, popping in and out of cover. And yes, I agree on the flash grenades being very useful and the smoke grenades being somewhat worthless, but both of those are particularly rare compared to explosive grenades, especially on some levels where half the enemies seem to drop a grenade.

I may consider a DH2 run, but thats only if I can get hold of a Saturn light gun. I'll concentrate on 3 and 1 for now though.

This topic for this game is the BEST in all for the last months on this board.
Yes, I am very interested on a speedrun for this game. Smiley

It is a long time ago I had play this game, I think over 10 years.

I do not know of differences from the Sega Saturn and the PSX version ?
I have the original first copy release for the PSX version in a small PSX case without the 'Sony

Playstation' logo.

This is a picture from my uncensored copy on the first release PAL, multilanguage with german USK logo.

can you capture and upload some test videos from you on the Sega Saturn version ?
Wikipedia says the differences are "The PC and Saturn versions required extensive redevelopment and simplification of the game's level maps, due to the inferior polygon handling of the Saturn and the available PC graphics cards of the day."

I'm not entirely sure how to interpret this, but I honestly believe that if someone produced a PSX run, it would be classed as a different run.

As for interest in running it, I'll certainly verify if you do produce a run.

In fact, I've just bought it off eBay (I lost my copy...I think....) so I'll play through it, and hopefully offer some more tips.

I'll be making a test video once my S-video cable arrives, but I can confirm that the description on the back of the PSX box is exactly the same as the Saturn box. I dont think there will be any significant differences to warrant a seperate category from a different system.

Yippee Ki Yay Muther F---------!!!!!

This run would be frickin' AWESOME to say the least.  I remember playing this game 'back in the day'!  Even though it wasn't really that great compared to other games, i personally found this title to be refreshing and full of mindless violence  Cheesy

don't have anything really substantial to say other than the usual, "Good luck, man!!" & "This will be great!!"  comments.

I had found a OOB in Die Hard 1 in level 02. I had it not really test out.
The OOB allow you to go over the map and you can run forward in all areas.

There are likely many such OOB glitches in other levels as well. Since this glitch was done on the PSX version and I'm playing on the Saturn version, there may be glitches in different places in different versions. I will have to do some exploring and see what I can find, and see which ones are useful for saving time. It doesnt seem the L2 OOB might be useful at all at first glance, but I could be wrong.

Good video though, thanks for sharing.
My copy arrived today, I'll play through it tomorrow! Smiley

As I thought, Die Hard is a lot more random than it first appears.

First of all, depending on how the AI reacts can determine their placement during the level. It seems if there are multiple paths that an enemy can follow, there is a tendency towards one route over another, but sometimes the enemy will either be slightly placed in a different location or following a different path.

Second of all, the items have some element of randomness. For example, on the first level there is a backpack that contains either a Grenade, a Smoke Grenade or a Flashbang, and that seems to be random. There is also a satchel that contains either a Machine Gun or a Steyr in one of the corners. And there is one wandering enemy that sometimes drops a set of body armour, but most of the time does not, although I have a feeling this is time-based.

Apologies for the double post, but this is a serious point.

I am now considering doing the individual levels as an IL run rather than making a full run of the game in one sitting. With the long loading times in between each level, plus the fact that you cant save until after the next level is started, it makes somewhat more sense to do as an IL run, at least for Die Hard. The game itself is pretty tough to do in a single segment, plus the fact that when you reload from a saved game, you get full health and armour back, where as if you continue from a previous level you retain the health and armour you finished that level with.

The problem coming from making IL runs would be the inventory. Since you can get a lot of grenades in certain levels, and these do carry over to later levels unlike the health, they can make a lot of difference in areas where there are several enemies close together. Doing an IL would be changed by the number of grenades you choose to carry into that level, which is affected by the previous levels. Of course, in the majority of cases it is faster to simply use whatever gun you happen to have. Which is another thing that can be carried over - you can theoritically start a new level with a full machine gun or other temporary weapon which makes the level that much faster.

While a segmented or single segment run would be obviously harder to do, IL runs would be much faster and just concentrate on the gameplay. With a segmented run, it is artificially increased in length by having to wait until the next level is loaded before the game can be saved, and single segment runs have the hardest difficulty due to the health not recovering automatically between levels.

Any thoughts on this would be appreciated.

it's been a loooooooong time since i've played this game so i don't have anything substantive to contribute but i'll try anyways.

IL levels sounds like a pretty good idea since you can take crazy risks (full dash toward enemies while blasting) but as you pointed out earlier your weapons and armor don't carry over.  you start with only the handgun every time right?  enemies drop certain weapons like automatic rifles IIRC so you'd probably have to figure out the quickest way to stock up on the appropriate weapons for each levels and also locating grenades that are lying around.  i would imagine you'd have to do this for the bosses at least since they come out with a whole posse of dudes surrounding them.  another benefit would be positioning yourself such that when you kill the last enemy of each level you'll be in the closest position possible for the bomb you have to disarm.  in a SS not only would you concentrate on survival and consistency but you'll become more easily disoriented and take longer locating the bomb.

hope that was half-way useful, i'm eagerly awaiting this run regardless what form it takes!  i'd def rather see this Die Hard than the third game even though i liked that one too.  too bad you can't use the ammo/armor codes.  wait wait wait, i just went on GAMEFAQS and there's a way to glitch your pistol to get 999 ammo.  you should try this out and then try out again with other weapons.  if you could get 999 rifle ammo without resorting to cheat codes i think you can feasibly do SS.  there's also a 50 grenades code but i dunno if it would be legal or not.
