Wow.  I just got the game a day ago and I've been playing it pretty dang hardcore since then and... it's interesting.  My next speed run is definitely going to be on this game and character mode, and since Vergil is such a DRASTICALLY different character than Dante, there's going to be a lot changing in this game.

First off, Vergil starts with all three weapons and along with it, you can buy several moves for the weapons.  HOWEVER, unlike Dante, Vergil is limited by his style level along with the orbs to purchase various moves.  So, for example, I can buy Stinger level 1 and Sword Throw for the Force Edge after mission 1, but I can't purchase Helmbreaker level 2 until I have Dark Slayer level 2.  This is very limiting to a point, due to the fact that I can't get the level 2 moves until mission 6 unless I can possibly get away with some farming, but it's doubtful since A&R provide TONS of experience that I don't think killing a few more prides would justify.

Secondly, the blue orbs I pick up for the single segment run, they're going to have to change.  Vergil's moveset is very limited in comparison to Dante's especially from the get-go.  By Default, Vergil has one combo with Yamato and a launcher move, which is just too damn slow to get the blue orb fragment.  He also has no airhike, so that makes a few others a touch unattractive.  So, combat adjudicators may be out of reach and I'll just might have to go through with just a single health upgrade in the run.  Ouch.

On a MAJOR plus, any and all pre-rendered cutscenes are REMOVED from Vergil's game entirely.  It's just level after level after level with no loading interruptions at all.  You still see the in-game rendered cutscenes like when the Hell Sloths make an apperance in the Love Planet, but other than that, there's nothing.  Finish mission 1 with Vergil, there's not even the gunfire graphic to slow you down.  Once the screen fades to black, you're delivered straight to the mission select screen.  Loading levels is much faster because of it (Due to in Dante, you'll have a five second loading screen, watch two seconds into a cutscene, skip it, wait another few seconds, and then FINALLY get to the action).

And while we're on the topic of much faster, there's going to be another way to categorize runs with the addition of the "Turbo" option which speeds up gameplay 20%, but the timers don't reflect that, they still measure in real time throughout the levels.  I may make use of this, may not, but it makes doing more bigger and better combos much more friendlier than having to stick with the "Normal" ones that I play with.  I may do Dante and Vergil in this speed mode because of it.  I'm afraid of mission 12 though with that on... Oi.

Hell, I'm almost afraid to use Cerberus at 20% faster, WITH the 20% speed bonus from its Devil Trigger.  Also, I think it may be worth my while to invest in some

We'll have to see what comes from those two features, but it'll be good...

Sounds promising...

What's next though....a fresh clear of the entire Bloody Palace since it counts as beating the entire game? Wink

Shhhhh!

>.>

Anyway, playing around some more, the Phantom Swords (Or Summoned Swords as they're now been officially labeled as) are the best investment you can get as far as I'm concerned, with Star Fall, Crescent Kick, and Stingers being the only other things really worth while, seeing as how I won't be accessing Lunar Kick Level 2 and Rapid Slash Level 2 until I can get level 3 Dark Slayer (Which will inevitably happen around mission 19 anyway, not much time to put them to use) and since Judgement Cut, Force Throw both require time to charge to put them to use, though they do decent damage, I don't care to leave myself very exposed.

Devil Trigger runes are going to be MUCH MORE important in this run as well, since although you can shoot Phantom Swords without any sort of cost to your DT gauge, when you charge the fire button for a few seconds, they'll surround Vergil and spin around, which can then either work as an extra damage buffer (And makes you almost immune to the damn Lusts), can be used so they appear over Vergil's shoulders and fire out in rapid fire, ALONG WITH the other swords you can make by spamming the fire button.  So you can have those swords out and STILL BE MAKING MORE SWORDS TO FIRE.  And there's also the ability to simply let the swords surround the enemy for a few seconds before impaling them, which is great since it does such huge damage that it kills the lesser prides outright and severly injure the higher ups.  To quote Ron Pompeli or whatever the hell his name is...

"Just set it and forget it!"

Good GOD does Vergil own.
100% runs=great to watch
Heh..sound like the game creators avoided half-assing this little SE.  Nice to see them put forth some effort to let the players be able to learn an entirely different approach to the game.

I'm pretty sure everyone can't wait to see all your DMC3-DMC3SE runs....past, present, and future.

Those rotisserie ovens did have some badass looking chicken and beef cuts in them too...
Let's fight to computer!
Vergil's moveset *is* limited compared to Dante's, but the game seems to be a lot more forgiving about it when it comes to Adjudicator statues. Only one or two have been a problem for me so far, and to be honest they would've given me a lot of trouble as Dante, too.
About Air Hike... well, his level 2 Dark Slayer skill replaces it to a point (but only to a point, and probably not a very fine one either) -- enough to get some out-of-the-way fragments but probably not enough for, say, the "stay in the air for 20 seconds" missions. Though, to be honest, I couldn't do that one as Dante either. Have I mentioned that I'm not all that good at DMC3?

Well, trying to get the Combat Adjudicator in mission 3 with Vergil's default movelist is just a pain, although thinking back, I realised I never used Vergil's arial moves on the thing.  D'oh.

Edit: Tried it again, making use of Vergil's Aerial Raid.  It works well enough.

However, even though Vergil gets Trick Up, I won't have it when I need it most (Mission 4) for the Gigapede fight and for traveling up the tower.  That's the problem right there.  I won't be able to double jump until mission SIX.

Edit Edit:  I played through the game entirely on the normal mode, now to tear through it on the same difficulty that I intend to do the run on.  I will say that a single segment with Vergil is going to be a HUGE ****ING ***** though, just because of the fact that he completely sucks at anything related to platforming.  I fell four times going through mission 17, I have to use Yamato's Aerial raid to safetly and consistently get over the blades in the Rounded Walkways, and there's way too many Dullahans.  >.>  That should be cleared up with practice though.

Mission 19 is going to require Rapid Slash level 2, which won't set me back too far, but it's definitely will be one of the last things I pick up.  Judgement Cut may get some mileage on Beowulf, since it does impressive damage during his temper tantrums when he starts punching columns at you.  By keeping up the summoned swords and making use of judgement cut, you're untouchable and he's taking a good chunk of damage.

Beowulf, move wise, only requires Starfall 2.  Excellent damage for the orbs.  Whenever I use Crescent Kick, I keep on launching the enemy way over my head, it's counter productive for me.

Force Edge-None necessary.

So here's my current plan.  Mission 3-Get Spiral Swords before Cerberus.  After all, Spiral Swords and Yamato does a good job of shattering the ice.  I'm not going to try the freezing Cerberus glitch, since I'm going to have to spend all my time in its face just to break the ice in a timely manner.  From there, more sword upgrades with the rare Devil Trigger upgrade thrown in as I can, and start saving for the Judgement Cuts along with Starfall.  Fallens seem to be much easier in this version, though that could very well be just because it's an easier difficulty to start with or because Vergil's Aerial Rave is so much better than Sky Cross from it's range.  So I may have some extra orbs on hand.
DMC3,ZOE2 and Xenosaga 2.  Am I crazy?
Wow, now I really wish they will release it here in Europe  Shocked

Too bad Capcom hates Europe.

http://www.play.com/play247.asp?pa=srmr&page=title&r=PC&title=877293

I has a European Release date but they put the game on PC section wich makes me lose some fath in them xD
Woo! I'm glad someone is doing this.

Except now I'm sad that I don't have it. I can't even get it until EB gets rid of their back order status.  Cry
O.K.  Been playing some more, and found out a lot more about Vergil.  Apparently, Yamato IS the best weapon in the game for raising Devil Trigger, since if you let Vergil complete the sheathing animation on at least his three hit yamato slash, it acts like a taunt.  Since Vergil's taunts are all EXCESSIVELY long, this is the fastest way to raise DT.  I believe a Gamefaqs user also mentions that the same can be done with at least Upper Slash, though I haven't noticed a thing with it.

Also, one of Vergil's taunts can be used to accumulate even MORE DT by using it when surrounded by enemies and staying in that pose for a while.  This is great in Leviathan's Retina Room for charging DT after the DTE.  I've been playing around today on a fresh Vergil Normal Run up to mission 11 where I got bored.

Gigapede is no longer an issue, really.  I need to see how he handles on Hard in comparison (Healthwise, anyway), but DT and Beowulf along with Summoned Sword spam works best, switching to force edge if he shoots purple orbs without flipping, yamato if he forced me off with a spin.

I need to work on a way to get consistent parries on A&R with Vergil's arsenal and Cerberus is still very nasty, though that's mostly because of the fact that I just can't get taunts to work with Cerberus and the spiral sword formation requires two DT Runes to summon.  This is a problem, since I can't get DT from slashing at ice.

I need to just perform BETTER overall and figure out how to get some nice high combos going since I was getting a lot more A ranks than I would if I was behind Dante.  Also, I need to figure out if it's worth it to get Rapid Slash and Stinger earlier on to try to cut down travel time.  I don't think I can afford it very early on, but Vergil and Dante by relation move SOOOOO slow.  I'm used to zipping around.  Still, the cost is a factor and I need a lot of combat moves to keep things going.  I may even end up getting Force Throw after all, since I've been toying around with it in conjunction with Judgement Cuts to nice effect.
DMC3,ZOE2 and Xenosaga 2.  Am I crazy?
Something interesting I found on the GameFAQs board:

"People have been talking about how you can do Upper Slash as Vergil, not do the second hit, let him fully sheathe the sword, and it'll act like a taunt, refilling some DT and raising your style meter. I have just found that this works with other moves, too! Yamato Combo: The last hit which is the quick-draw strike. Let Vergil sheathe the sword and watch your DT and style meter. It went up, didn't it? As previously mentioned, this works with Upper Slash. Do the hit after Upper Slash (the downward slash). Let Vergil sheathe the sword. The same thing happens!

About Vergil's Taunt where he says, "You shall die." and gets in that stance where he stays that way until you make him walk/run/jump/attack: If you do the taunt while there are enemies around, you can sit there in that stance and watch as a purple aura surrounds Vergil and his DT starts replenishing! It takes a few seconds for the DT restoration to take effect so be careful.

Hope you guys can make some use of this info."

Alright...
Mission 1- 1:23 Mission 2: 1:50 Mission 3: 4:05 Mission 4: 5:47 Mission 5- 7:33 Mission 6- 1:52.

Those are the times I got with the first six missions of the game before I saved and quit.  My gameplay with Vergil is MUCH better now, to the point where I'm getting consistent S ranks through the first five missions and all of the bosses so far are acceptable.  And if you're wondering, mission 5 is a minute slower than my prior run due to the mandatory Jester fight.  The guy's a sinch, but it still takes a while to get his health down.

Did more experimenting on the mobility moves.  I am not getting any pre-Arkham since Vergil's Rapid Slash, as it turns out has a long animation leading up to it, and a long (Though cancellable) animation immediately afterwards.  It's impratical on a lot of levels for it, and Stinger again is the best, but you're not going to save too much time when the orbs could be spent elsewhere.  Boss wise, I think they'll pretty much continue to be the same with some exceptions.  Vergil's incredible strength and Summoned Swords are enough to take out Agni/Rudra's health to 25% in a single stun.  However, I'm still finding myself fighting the urge to use my Summoned Swords and focus more on DTEs.... but they're so damn fun to use...

(Sigh)

On a high note, Vergil's Yamato could very well have its own element being that it's "Darkness."  It'd explain the damage it does to Fallen and Beowulf to such an extreme.

I should make a video showing what I mean...
DMC3,ZOE2 and Xenosaga 2.  Am I crazy?
Make a vid of Beowulf and use the othe weapons too for comparison. I heard that you have to fight Jester only once but you can fight him three times if you want? Exactly where is the Jester fight in M.5?

There's a black smoke graphic when it connects, similar to Cerberus' Ice and Agni/Rudra's flame graphic so it's not completely unfathomable.  Using Judgement Cut on Beowulf is extremely beneficial and I'll make a video showing off just how much damage it can take off.  I believe a three hit Judgement Cut on the guy deals more damage than a full charged DTE when he's in his berserker mode.  It's also come to my attention that Judgement Cut can also be used greatly in mission 9 to dispatch Nevan's shields incredibly fast.  I need to experiment some more, but my purchasing order might change... again.  (Grumbles)

Also, Jester shows up in mission 5.  After the first Bloodgoyle fight you encounter a portal appears and you have to go into it and take out Jester before the door barricade will disappear.

As is, anyway, Jester 1 is just... ridiculously easy in the first place.  You only need to shoot off some swords at the beginning when he's producing illusions and when you finally see Confetti bleed, you trick over, DT, and go Beowulf on his butt, accompanied by Summoned Sword barrages.  I imagine he's harder in other difficulties and in boss fights further down the road (He shows up in mission 12 near the Time Goddess Statue outside Geryon's door, and in the Three Trials Lobby in mission 17) but in Mission 5, he's cake.  Free style, 1,000 extra orbs and a minute's worth of distraction.
In the very first room after you kill the bloodgoyles.  A portal opens up

After watching my recent run a few times, I'm much more confident in my DMC3 Segmented 1:59:13 run.  I'll be sending it out sometime this week or very soon after.  I just need to time the third video I made to improve the run by a minute and a half covering four missions.

And yeah.  Didn't feel like digging up the OLD old thread.
YAY!

BTW, do you fight Jester instead of Dante in Vergil's game?
Jester's scattered around in Random Portals.  You still go up against the Vergil fights as Vergil, only Vergil has a color swap.

Anyway, I just wanted to say I enjoyed your Sword Master and Trickster runs and I'm looking forward to checking out your Royal Guard.

It begins.

I'm starting off with a segmented run so that way I can get familiar with what I should expect from Vergil and study the footage I get back.  Provided it's good enough, I'll submit it and begin working on the single segment.  But JEEZ the first three missions are going to be brutal.

Mission 1-1:13

Mission 2-1:33

Total Time- 3:48

The first few missions are the most difficult, if you ask me.  You have all of Vergil's weapons available, but they're still painfully limited with one basic combo and one other move (Along with their aerial crap, of course).  These two are easily the fastest S ranks I've gotten so far.

Even though I do a lot of excessive Lunar Phases, the mission 2 time has yet to be improved upon for an S ranking, which is required in this run seeing as Vergil is very orb intensive early on.  I have been able to save four seconds and get a 1:29 A rank though.

The game will only get much easier once Trick Up becomes available (God I love that move) and as Vergil's movelist evolves, especially with the Summoned Swords.  Mission 3 is going to be a huge pain though, since Spiral Sword formation is required to break the ice barrier in the Cerberus fight at a timely fashion and I've only three Devil Orbs to play with.
I look foward to the insane amount of ass kicking this run will display.
I need some opinions.

I've been playing on Turbo Mode for a little while.  Just screwing around and what have you and I was wondering.  I'm more than capable of handling it, but would you guys rather see Vergil with Turbo or without?  With Turbo, it's much faster (20% to the newbies) but the game's timer goes at the same speed as without turbo.  On the other hand, I don't have a method of accurately being able to compare Vergil to Dante like I would if they're the same speed.  I need to ask Radix first about this, but in the mean time, what would you viewers prefer?
If its like easy automatic don't do it. I'd need to see it to make a judgement call though.
Beep bitch.  Beep.
Turbo would add a HUGE kick-ass factor to the run, so its got my vote.
Oh, trust me, it makes things MUCH harder.  I'll make a video showing it.
