Hi all,

I was considering doing a speedrun for Deus Ex. SDA already has a Deus Ex speedrun, but, after watching it, it became obvious that it uses a number of glitches (grenade jumping, teleporting through glass, etc.) I was hoping to try to do a run without using glitches; would that be filed under a separate category? There's no way I'll be able to beat the existing time with a "clean" playthrough.

Thanks,
Andrew

Existence as you know it is over
No. This isn't TG.
wise fwom yo gwave
What is a glitch?
guffaw
miserable little pile of secrets

.. sorry
I've got explosives!
From the rules section:

Quote:
Glitches: Many speed runs utilize glitches, unintended side effects of the game's programming, to their advantage. There are some glitches which won't be allowed, though: generally any glitch that allows you to leave the normal bounds of the game world or to magically teleport between distant locations will be forbidden. Anything involving removing or altering a game disc/cartridge or files while the game is running is forbidden. Probably any other glitch will be allowed, but exceptions might be made on an individual basis. Runs using borderline glitches will probably be allowed in separate categories from runs that don't use them.

Now, Grenade Jumps are just plain physics, just like the grav gun jumping in HL2 (and that didn't end up causing it to get its own category).  The window warp through grenade flips is a little odd, I will admit, but it's really a borderline case.  The fact that the run was cleared and posted without any caveats says that they didn't see these as warrenting a new category.  Otherweise the old run might still be up along side it =P

The glitches weren't considered of a kind that warrants new category as far as I know.

That said, the 100% run is still not done, you may want to try that.
Alright, I may try the 100% run. What would such a run entail? Completing every objective, getting every item, killing everybody?

Thanks,
Andrew

That's more or less depending on what Radix says.
Cool. Every time I've played the game I've tried to play as a pacifist (completing every objective while killing/knocking out nobody except for those you have to kill/knock out to accomplish an objective.) Would that be a viable option for a run?
A pacifist speedrun would be pretty cool.
give me your eyes!!!
It wouldn't be SDA submittable as it's just an arbitrary restriction rather than fitting in a low% catagory. Of course if you can get the minimum possible number of things in the game while doing it quickly then that would be an option, but if it's faster to attack someone then you'd have to do that.
I believe it is possible to do the run using just the key ring but it is meant to be incredibly difficult, but it would be cool to have a speed run done using nothing but the key ring
Yeah I remember watching a key-ring only run. Wasn't meant to be a speedrun but was quite impressive to watch anyhow.
Heyyy... wait.. i don't know you. Don't confuse me

Don't you have to kill at least one "boss" or something? Like Anna Navarre in the Plane? Can you just run out while she is killing this Leader guy? (Long time since i played DX ^^)
.
You do have to kill her at some point yes, whether it's at Lebedev, or in Unatco. I think there was a third place to do it, but I can't remember. Anyhow you can kill her by leaving a box of TNT next to the doors near Lebedev, she'll open the doors, the TNT crate gets crushed, explodes, she dies. Tada.

Killphrase.
.
Well that's no fun. Sad

But yeah, you could use her killphrase.
Let's fight to computer!
Crate of boom is always the best way to solve a sticky gameplay problem.

Well setting up a trap isn't very pacifistic ^^

But i guess it would count as a pacifist-run, as long as you dong pull any weapon and start shooting. But thats just a guess...

Well, by killing Navarre, you are saving the life of Lebedev (assuming the unatco troopers left without checking the plane to see why Navarre never came back out :)). So, technically, its pacifism... At least it should be Smiley
There's really no other way to get past the locked unatco door, barring cheating, or climbing lams to get out of the map bounds.
At least she's the only one that has to die.
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
Actually, I've heard (and I think I remeber seeing a video) of getting by her by using gas grenades or lam to get her to open it (without killing her).

"i just killed an army.. to save that little rabbit over there"

pacifism is complicated... ^^

On the other hand. If she really HAS to die, then killig her (with a tnt crate) has to be allowed.

Sweet! Though it does look time consuming to place all of the crates there.
