I was just wondering how everyone was enjoying the game.

I'm torn, as to whether, it's better than Demon Souls. It's hard to mess with how fresh Demon Souls felt. It's something you can't recapture. At the same, time I feel like Dark Souls has done most things better, from a game design standpoint.

The only thing that has been bugging me so far is the open world element. It's a irritating to have to trek 10-15mins to a location that's on the other side of the "map". I got cursed in the depths today, and I had to make my way all the way to the upper bell tower just to buy a cure. The Nexus was nice in Demon Souls, just because it cut a lot of that needless backtracking out. In the grand scheme of things, it's not that big of an issue for me, but I am dreading the next time that I get cursed. Just sayin'.

Overall, the game is much tighter. Gone are the confusing, almost transparent, world tendencys of the first game, and in it's place are a much more robust and easy to understand covenant scheme. Also, I think the Estus flask set up is very liberating. It has two benefits, I don't have to worry about farming herbage anymore, and I know exactly how many heals I have to get through a given segment. This helps especially with planning, and definitely helps iron out some of the cheesy strategies that were present in the first game.

Though proficient on art style alone, Demon Souls can't touch the gorgeousness that Dark Souls can sometimes surprise you with. I fought the gaping dragon and was almost sad after he was slain, because that meant that I couldn't see him (her?) anymore. All those teeth glistening in the light? The way it shrank back and convulsed, right before spewing acid all over the battlefield? There are some pretty serious framerate issues in places, but the art direction and environments are impeccable.

Even small victories feel huge, and every moment is momentous. This is gaming at it's most masochistic.

Beat it a couple days ago, and I enjoyed it. BTW there's already a nico run which gets to Anor Londo in half an hour.

That's very impressive. I'm glad to finally get a response on this thread. Thank you.

I don't think I'm anywhere close to beating it. I'm stuck on spider lady. I don't have any fire resistant armor, and it's making this battle a pain. I'm wondering if I should move on and come back later. Advice? Soul level 30, mostly a dex build, but I also have a bit of strength. 16?
welcome to the machine
I've been playing this a lot.  Haven't beat it yet, but I got through Anor Londo.

A lot of the mechanics are vastly improved.  Flasks >> grass, humanity, sliding down ladders by pressing O... all things that I wish would be backported to Demon's.  A lot of the area designs are better, too.  Demon's was pretty drab, and while it worked well, I'm glad Dark uses a wider palette.  Ash Lake, Anor Londo, and Darkroot Garden are my three favorite environments in the series, so far.

Many other things are way worse, however.  Bosses are much less memorable this time around...and some of them are copy-pasted from Demon's anyways.  Then there are the fights that seem uninspired but have the difficulty cranked up, like Capra.  Which is not to dis the times when they hit it out of the park; Gaping Dragon and Sif are pretty awesome designs, even if the dragon isn't much of a fight.

I also think From let the praising of Demon's difficulty go to their head.  In Dark it feels like some parts are designed around characters being twinked out (I'm thinking specifically of the outer wall section of Anor with the two archers, here -- I'm not sure how a standard melee build without much in the way of magic is supposed to pass that section without just getting lucky.  Ornstein and Smaug too).  They definitely haven't struck as good a balance this time around, and I quit for a while to go replay Demon's halfway through because of that.

oh, and weapon upgrading is even more confusing this time around, despite there being fewer types of stones.  no idea how they managed that.

but eh.  I'm still enjoying it, even if I'm cursing the wasted potential.  Could've been way better than demon's, but as is it appears to be worse.  Haven't beaten it yet though, so who knows.
Well, so far it looks like 1:26 is the "time to beat".

Improvements can be made, but as to how much time they shave off, not really sure. It looks like joining the Chaos Covenant can't be avoided unless a very large glitch or skip is found because the "back door" route to Lost Izalith you get for ranking up the covenant saves so much time. It lets you skip two bosses and a lot of running through dangerous areas.
Since you are joining the Chaos anyway, it makes sense to go Pyromancer as you won't likely have the materials to upgrade traditional weapons/gear very much and the Pyro flame simply requires souls to upgrade, of which you will have plenty.
Anyway, I'll let the video by RTA speak louder than I can. I'm just finishing up my second playthrough of Dark Souls and then its back to working on my God Hand run.
torch slug since 2006
I got this game, the day before it came out, "for the lulz" mostly, but I have to say that it is a good game. Very challenging thouigh. My first character had the class thats at the bottom at the list (the one who starts naked basically),  and I had no idea that he was hard to play as. Anyway, with him I made it past Taurus Demon, but then I realized (after reading a GameFAQ faq) that he was the hardest class, so I changed to warrior now, and I am at the same point.

I havent played it alot though, since school & mario 64 & starcraft 2 has kept me busy but I will get back to the game soon.

That RTA is insane btw..
Guys this run is ok an all, but I think there are alot more things to learn about this game.
Just a boy and his digimon
To Caveberry, why did you run all the way to the belfry tower? You can buy purging stones from the vendor between Firelink and the Undead burg (the one that sounds like Gollum from lotR). Also, if you use the "dingy" set, you get crazy curse resist and don't have to worry about getting cursed unless you really let yourself get blasted 2 or 3 times and stay in it. (Without spoiling anything, you get the dingy set from the firekeeper at firelink. If you want to know how to get it, I'll spoiler alert it right below this)
SPOILER:
If you save Lautrec from the belfry tower prison, he will kill her when you get a second firekeeper soul. This extinguishes the bonfire at Firelink. You can pick up her gear off her body, the "dingy gear". Later, in Anor Londo, you can use the black eye orb that you pick up off her body to invade Lautrec's world, kill him, get an awesome ring and her soul back to revive her and the firelink bonfire.

As for Queelag/Kelloggs, if you use take human form at the bonfire in in Blighttown, then walk into the swamp, your game will get "invaded" by an NPC named "Maneater Mildred". She's easily beaten and, after you beat her, you can summon her to help you fight Queelag. Her soapstone will be right outside the boss room. She'll pretty much tank for you. I beat Queelag on my first try thanks to her.

and to Vorpal Edge, I'm a straight melee build and I got past the archers by just running up and then rolling underneath the arrows and slashing the archers. It wasn't that hard. I'm working on beating Smough and Ornstein, but I've only given it a few tries.

I haven't watched the speedrun yet, because I don't wanna spoil anything for myself, but I'm going to as soon as I beat the game and I would love to help by providing any information I can. I'm really enjoying this game so far.
trepidation
Thanks for the tip Juke, because i just got cursed again in "the Great Hollow." I beat Queelag soon after posting that. She wasn't too bad, I just needed to go double hand on her.

I'm much further into the game right now. I've knocked out Sen's fortess, the hydra, ceaseless discharge, and dabbled in both Darkroot garden and Anor Londo. I'm not really going through the game in any coherent order. Sif was a bit too aggressive for me, so I backtracked to the great hollow to find out what was going on there. It turns out...not so much.
trepidation
OMFG... This game is for masochists for sure. I got cursed in "The Great Hollow", and went on to have an epic battle with the hydra in ash lake. It was seriously, tooth and nail. I finally bested him (after a couple hours) and felt an elation I haven't felt for years...

I farmed for a purging stone off the clams, and now I'm sitting pretty. I just need to battle my way back up....
I kinda want to add onto this

It actually doesn't matter if you free him or not; once you ring both bells, if you haven't killed him, he will kill the firekeeper. If you ring the Gargoyle bell first he'll camp out by her cage where you can kill him Tongue

Anyways, Bought the game when it came out, beat it after like 2 weeks, Watched the RTA. Kinda lost interest in it already Tongue
Really fun game, I guess to me it kinda lost its charm once I beat it.

That guy sounded too evil for me to let him out of his cell. So what does he do? He gets out anyway and murders my homey and disables firelink anyways. Whata' dick...

I hope I don't lose interest after I beat the game. I would really love to defeat at least one new game+. Plus, I would like to explore the covenant system a bit more.

EDIT: Does anyone have any tips for Ornstein & Smough? I'm trying to beat them without summoning anyone, but the best I've been able to do was get Orny down to 1/2 health.
DERP
Personally I love the game, I'll be aimming for my platinum trophy after I finish Uncharted 3.

Also I showed this game to a friend who has played Demons Souls and couldn't get into it like the rest of us, but after he beat the gargoyle boss with my "Backseat driver" assistance, he hasn't stopped texting me saying how much he wants to finish the game.

Welp! I'm still stuck on Orny and smough, but that's not really why I'm posting. I encountered a strange glitch. I had just entered the fog gate and was getting ready to do battle for the 100th time, but something was amiss. Orny was nowhere to be found.  After a bout 15seconds of running around a cutscene played signifying the death of Ornstein. I don't know what happend, but my guess is that he either fell through the floor or Smough somehow clipped him out of the level. I have ho idea how it happened or if it is even replicable. If it is, then it could obviously have some use in a speedrun.

I'm a thinker, I could break it down
I'm definitely gonna make this my next speedrunning project. I've logged over 200 hours, so it shouldn't be hard to learn. One question first; is using the new patch allowed, or do I have to delete it? Is this a case of going with whichever is faster?

Whichever is faster.  There's a 35-minute run floating around on youtube somewhere, fyi, and there's also a slower over-one-hour run that doesn't skip the second half of the game.

(also, if you start seriously planning/working on the game, i'll probably move this topic to newer consoles)
I'm a thinker, I could break it down
For future reference, this is the 35 minute run.

The Lloyd's Talisman trick freaking blew my mind. But why does he use all that humanity? Nothing better to do while going up elevators?

I regret that I'm gonna have to run around naked Angry
Could someone possibly explain this Lloyd's Talismen trick? I've been watching Lp's but haven't played myself and thoroughly enjoyed the run.
I'm a thinker, I could break it down
Apparently, if you throw a Lloyd's Talisman at a Mimic, it will open up and let you get it's item without having to fight it. Ew. I still don't know why the runner uses all that humanity, though.

Is installing the game to the hard drive on 360 allowed? I assume so, but I wanna make sure.

I'd like this to be moved to newer consoles. Sorry for missing that comment earlier.

[edit by vorpal: done.  also merged a second topic that started in the meantime, which is why the next post doesn't seem like it read the topic]

Yes, a worthless avatar riding my posts.
I think everyone interested in running this game already knows about the Japanese run by 'twilight'.

He picked a Pyromancer with Master Key and skipped as many things as possible while collecting 30 Humanity to open the shortcut to Lost Izalith. The final boss was killed with parry-riposted into Great Chaos Fireball combos.

This run was done before the 1.05 patch, which nerfed pyromancy from what I hear.

But I found a skip glitch video. This allows you to skip to the Kiln without any of the 4 Lord Souls.

It still works in 1.05. However he did it on the PS3 version. The only person I have right now isn't in this area and I have the Xbox360 version so I can't test on there.

I think for a new run we may have to use a totally new kind of character, because if the Lord Souls can be skipped then the only essential objectives are to ring the Bells of Awakening and drop into Firelink Altar to challenge the final boss immediately.  Killing the final boss while so underleveled may prove very, very difficult, we'll have to see. Is pyromancy still the best chance of success here? Maybe just a weapon with a very high critical rate and some cheap upgrades on it? Starting as a Thief may be essential to start with the Target Shield which is supposed to good for parrying but then we will have no access to pyromancer as there will be no time to save Laurentius...or can you get a Pyromancy Flame from Eingyi after beating Chaos Witch Quelaag?

I'm not sure how Darkstalker Kaathe works, do you have to beat Four Kings to talk to him and get him to take you to Firelink Altar? That also requires the Covenant of Artorias and yeah this sounds like it wouldn't be a faster alternate route at all.
Edit history:

Yeah, Kaathe doesn't appear until the Four Kings are dead.  They can be beaten before you get the lordvessel (they are either not behind a yellow barrier or you can skip past it, not sure which), but Kaathe won't take you to the altar until you have it, so it's moot.

And given that the 35 min run still visits anor londo and gets the lordvessel, it also looks like you can't just drop down Frampt's pit after Quelaag and reach the altar early either.  Or it's the easiest improvement ever.

The other thing I want to note is another addition to the game's theme of bosses jumping to their deaths.  You can get the Taurus demon to jump off his bridge for an insta-kill.  idk how to manipulate it, but it's happened to me twice.

Whoa, there's another speedrun that's even faster? I can't seem to find it, care to share a link?

These runs look very hard to beat, but it would be nice to have something for this game on SDA to stand beside Demon's Souls.

nevermind, found it:
I'm a thinker, I could break it down
Jumping into Frampt's pit before you get the Lordvessel kills you, unfortunately.

Maybe there's an attack where the Taurus Demon steps back, which can cause him to fall off.
Yes, a worthless avatar riding my posts.
I think he has a leaping attack. There's a spot on the bridge where the wall is crumbled so I think you can bait him into doing it there. Still, Gold Pine Resin on the weapon seems to do the trick well enough.
