trepidation
I was just wondering how everyone was enjoying the game.
I'm torn, as to whether, it's better than Demon Souls. It's hard to mess with how fresh Demon Souls felt. It's something you can't recapture. At the same, time I feel like Dark Souls has done most things better, from a game design standpoint.
The only thing that has been bugging me so far is the open world element. It's a irritating to have to trek 10-15mins to a location that's on the other side of the "map". I got cursed in the depths today, and I had to make my way all the way to the upper bell tower just to buy a cure. The Nexus was nice in Demon Souls, just because it cut a lot of that needless backtracking out. In the grand scheme of things, it's not that big of an issue for me, but I am dreading the next time that I get cursed. Just sayin'.
Overall, the game is much tighter. Gone are the confusing, almost transparent, world tendencys of the first game, and in it's place are a much more robust and easy to understand covenant scheme. Also, I think the Estus flask set up is very liberating. It has two benefits, I don't have to worry about farming herbage anymore, and I know exactly how many heals I have to get through a given segment. This helps especially with planning, and definitely helps iron out some of the cheesy strategies that were present in the first game.
Though proficient on art style alone, Demon Souls can't touch the gorgeousness that Dark Souls can sometimes surprise you with. I fought the gaping dragon and was almost sad after he was slain, because that meant that I couldn't see him (her?) anymore. All those teeth glistening in the light? The way it shrank back and convulsed, right before spewing acid all over the battlefield? There are some pretty serious framerate issues in places, but the art direction and environments are impeccable.
Even small victories feel huge, and every moment is momentous. This is gaming at it's most masochistic.
