How soon until we can get some dates set in stone? I'd like to get an idea on dates so I can stalk ticket prices for the best deal.

We require more minerals
So, my mother has expressed interest in coming along and having a bit of a vacation if my game gets in. She might stop by and watch a few games but would probably be out and about most of the time. What kind of things are there in the area for people who might be interested in sightseeing?

(My mom has come with me to several competitive gaming events and genuinely had fun hanging around the crowd to watch the games and visiting the cities that they were in. She's also a very relaxed person in general, so having her around wouldn't really be a problem.)
There are so many things to see and do while in Edmonton. It's all about what your mother finds interesting.

If it's okay with the Poxanator, I could get a gigantic list together of sightseeing things for during and after the marathon. As long as he gives the okay, I'd love to take pm's from people about what they'd like to see and do.

SDA Speedruns: 1
We went curling last year, but that ended with about 6-8 of us falling on the ice, and 3 of us getting injured.  Don't think that is gonna be an option this year although I found curling to be a lot of fun.
kinda sounds interesting trying that curling though many of us can stand to be on the ice lol
SDA Speedruns: 1
Well, they gave us lessons on how to stand and slide on the ice and how to throw the rocks, "looks at puwexil" but since we were all inexperienced we still fell.
Moo! Flap! Hug!
Will try to get everything addressed on Tuesday evening and the things that need finalizing done.  In the meantime, quick answers:

Dates

Not absolutely set in stone, but here's what I was thinking:

- Kickoff: late afternoon, Friday 2 May 2014
- Gaming ends: evening, Wednesday 7 May 2014
- Post-marathon fun in Edmonton/Jasper (since Jasper never happened last time, heh): 8-9 May 2014.
- Fly home: 10 May 2014

I'm open to budging slightly earlier (but not later).  However, the earliest I could be into Edmonton is late (think: last flight in) on Monday 28 April 2014.  So:

- The earliest we could even consider starting (if you accept, as an axiom, my desire to personally test the setup in its entirety before we kickoff) is the evening of Tuesday 29 April 2014 (ending late on Sunday 4 May 2014).  I'm not sure how much a late Sunday ending would do for us in terms of hype/fundraising?  But, I could be wrong here, and am entirely open to input.

- We also could start, say, mid-day on Wednesday 30 April 2014 (just to give us that extra half-day to get all the equipment in-place and tested).  But, I really don't see what that gains us over, say, a Friday start, unless there were compelling travel reasons (or, obviously, something I'm not thinking of at the moment).

Let me know what everyone thinks.

Curling

No.

Plus, all the rinks would be closed by then anyways Smiley You'll actually get to experience a Canadian spring, as opposed to the two-blizzard C4L 2013.

I really don't want to fly home on a weekend. The ticket prices for weekend's are higher than the weekdays. That being said, I plan to stay for the whole experience and whichever dates we end up with, I guess I will have to live with. Just throwing my 2 cents in and seeing what comes back.

Also that two-blizzard C4L was also 1 blizzard on the day everyone arrived, no snow the whole trip, then the blizzard the day before everyone left. LOL

Re Dates: To me, all those options sound more or less equal, with the exception of starting Tuesday evening. I do very much accept your axiom (which I think is mandatory for you as an organiser, unless UraniumAnchor or someone of his kind wishes to take full and entire responsibility for the functioning of the stream), which means that having a rushed-ish schedule (you arriving with something like my last year's flight from YVR and the setup required functional some 18 hours later) is a VeryBadIdea™.

Re Curling: Shame .__. But we still need a rematch … I know! Let's play hockey instead! \o/
And is it really granted that Edmonton May will be warm? There's really no chance of snow? None at all? If I put on my puppy face? ó.ò
Fucking Weeaboo
People injured in curling? Must have been Americans. We're too stupid to understand that not all sports are contact sports. Tongue
Moo! Flap! Hug!
That Wednesday start isn't so bad then, strictly from the point of view of travel costs.  The flip side is that a Wednesday start / Monday finish seems less than ideal from the hype-POV.  A Tuesday afternoon start could lead to a solid Sunday-evening finish; but yeah, especially if I'm flying in equipment Monday night, there just seems to be too much potential for something to go catastrophically wrong.  (It'll be worth me recalculating the exact length of the marathon after Round Two, just in case.  Depending on exact duration, a late Tuesday start could be massaged to work...)

And no, Edmonton can still get snow in May.  It's just very unusual.  I couldn't find weekly statistics but:
- Edmonton's growing season starts in the first or second week of May;
- The average daily temperature in April is 5; and,
- The average daily temperature in May is 12.
So, what's it like, on average, in the first week of May?  Nice and pleasant, usually!  Either very little snow left on the ground or things starting to grow.  So, hopefully no repeat of 2013, like I said Smiley
Evermore Extrodinare ᕦ(° Д°)ᕤ
Like I told Driscollad I'm bringing my golf clubs up :9. Yeah the weather should be MUCH more favorable than last years absurdly wintery weather. Also if we are going to start Friday (Which def sounds like the better option from an overall hype standpoint) Then chances are you'd have to make sure that Rini and myself don't play on the first day as chances are we wouldn't be up there until late Friday MAYBE even late Saturday depending on if work is willing to give me a few extra days off (I got plenty of sick time ;D). Also Keypaladin is going to be car pooling with Rini and myself from what it sounds like so just to be on the safe side (And as things unfold I can keep you in the loop) try to get him later if possible as well :).

Also you said it wrong...it's the Canadian BLOOD SPORT ᕦ(° Д°)ᕤ OF CURLING. Still yeah it wasn't exactly fun for everyone that kept falling and getting hurt, but it was actually a lot of fun overall (Before the ice started claiming Americans). Also Poxnor have you heard anything about which hotel or where JDRF was thinking about letting us setup shop for the marathon yet? Like which part of Edmonton or anything like that?
My feelings on The Demon Rush
Just from a watching standpoint, it would make more sense if the marathon ended Sunday or Monday. In the case of Monday, the last day wouldn't have the most viewers, but you would still build up for the weekend. The honest truth is that the first day will never have the most viewers.

However, I don't feel strongly about the dates, and if starting Friday works out better for people, then that's fine. The event will be successful regardless.
Professional Second Banana
My only real preference is to have as much of the event as possible on weekends, to minimize the # of vacation days I need to take.
there must be one thing there and thats lots and lots of diet lipton green tea with citrus

I say put the estimate on Suikoden Glitchless Any% at 4:30:00.  The 108 star/Best ending route I don't have an estimate yet for, but will Post soon as I have one.
Looks like every ones has been improving on the times for C4L. My new routing not so will at the moment. Do want a better time estimate as soon I get my new route done.

The Wayward Wanderer
I'm usually doing runs and testing every Sunday.  I managed to get a poor 2:12 on Ys Oath in Felghana.  And I'm still practicing Ys 1, and I'm getting sub-50.  I wouldn't update the estimate for Oath in Felghana until I determine consistency.

Round Two will end whenever I get the thoughtful replies of my reviewers Smiley

I don't expect it will take long, though.

Did you get the thoughtful replies yet? If there are a couple of slackers you might want to give them a hard deadline of a couple of days from now, or just cut them off since they've had plenty of time. I'm curious what's going to happen round 2.

For many of us who we know that might not have have much of a chance compared to those that are for sure to go, this wait makes many of us nervous and anxious.

Moo! Flap! Hug!
My apologies for the wait making you nervous.  I've been working on a lot of things behind the scenes this past week concerning the exact dates and length of C4L 2014, which (naturally) will have a significant effect on game selection.  I intended to have these details sorted out a week or two ago (i.e., this delay never should have happened).  But, such is life.

I actually have a phone call to make in about half an hour that should resolve some of the uncertainty.

But, I assure you, the delay is not without cause.

Cheers Smiley

That's a pity.

Ys 3 Oath in Felghana
-  PC (Steam)
- Keypaladin 2:45:00
Info: The 3rd game in the series.  Started as a 2d side-scroller and got a 3d remake back in 2005.  Fast paced action, platformer RPG. Downside:  Other than a small amount of grinding, none that I can think of. Incentives: None. Watchability:  The game is fast paced, even grinding doesn't feel like grinding.

Depending on difficulty this estimate seems awfully high. My Very Easy run is 1:42, and that's 22 or so minutes off of the record which is held by xtremeBored.
Poxnor I and I do believe many others can say we know you got real life things to do before C4L. For my first time having to apply for the marathon is why I am nervous and anxious  at the same time.
