If Withhelde is okay with it, I'd like to offer to do commentary for Star Ocean: Till the End of Time as well. Cheesy Us Star Ocean runners gotta stick together. Wink

Getting so hype for this with all these game offers that are happening. ^_^

Yeah, I would be super down for it~

If megakidicarus is unable to make it...

Final Fantasy III (Famicom)
est. 2:45:00
The last in the NES series, this game is overrun with glitches and manipulable randomness, and can be broken to quite an extent.  If an exact, pre-planned path is followed, most random battles can be skipped.  Resets are planned throughout the run to manipulate RNG.  The max battle inventory trick and 99-items trick will be used to corrupt the memory of items into other items and character stats to superpower them and skip some sections of the game. Job glitching, which can be used to end battles and/or end the game instantly, won't be used, so you'll still see most bosses, including the final boss.

- Watchability: It's a charming game with cool music, and while some aspects of it are trivialized, you still get to see most of the game, and it's short enough to not get too repetitive (2:45 is an extremely lenient estimate)
- Freshness: I haven't seen anyone else in the English speaking communities run it, and certainly hasn't been at a marathon.
- Donation incentives: 4 names (6 letters each).  The first letter of one of the names will get incremented by 1 due to a side effect of one of the glitches.
- Runner involvement: I've been on SDA and SRL since early 2011.  Attended sgdq11, agdq12, sgdq12, agdq13, and sgdq13, and a few online marathons.  I've been lazy about streaming for a while now, but involve myself in community events when possible.
- Appropriateness: (4).  Under 3 hours is really short for a Final Fantasy, and it's a very enjoyable game in terms of audio, visuals, execution, and technical explanation.  I didn't rank it a 5 because the run is a bit volatile, as time could be lost in large chunks due to failures at manipulating encounters to skip battles and receive favorable item drops.

I can likely get about 2 days off of work, and I'll wrap it around a weekend and visit Canada for the first time at this thing Shocked
I will probably be attending, and will want to offer Chrono Trigger and Lufia II for games. Wanna focus on AGDQ for the time being though, ill get back to you with more details
Oh wow, I had no idea C4L was held in Edmonton.
Being from Sask, I would totally be up for going and supporting in any way I can. I;m not sure what your game criteria is, but I could, (and would love to) run Links Awakening OR even Mario RPG! Both fun, and relatively short games (RPG wise)
Sounds super fun and i'm excited no matter what Smiley

oops douple post :/ haha
that Metroidvania guy
The FF3 glitchfest is something I even considered doing myself, and I would love to be commentating with duckfist if that's in. I actually know quite a bit about the game and its glitches. This definitely isn't the most popular game, but it's such a broken mess that it will be a lot of fun for everyone. Crossing my fingers for that one. Smiley

I have to say it....

Moo! Flap! Hug!
Alright, time for another update -- I could use the break from hitting my head against my thesis Tongue

I've also added a "nations represented" list to the first post, because JDRF really loved the international presence last year.  I'm guessing that they'll want to know how many countries people are coming from for press releases and the like Smiley  So far I have Canada, England, France, Germany, and the US on the list; but, I don't know where everyone is from, so if I'm missing a country please let me know (I already know that if Potato Handle can commit to trying to come, that adds Australia as well).

****

Vulajin: Okay, I reduced the estimates to 4:00:00.

FFGamer: Added your games to the list and added you to the attendance list.  But, we both know the real weakness of FFF:CD is random dungeons, so I put that in.  That said, the cuteness-overload donation incentives are a strength, so I put that in too.  I also put my name down for commentary on that one.

CVagts: Were you just looking to elaborate on FFGamer's post about Suikoden, or were you looking at getting in on playing it?  I was unsure, so I haven't added you to the attendees or games list yet.  Just let me know Smiley

FFGamer and CVagts: Is any% vs. 100% a possible incentive for Suikoden?

Lag.Com: I made that, uhh, small (?) change to your estimate.  Is there some way (e.g., getting a certain game/system version) that could bring that estimate back down?

romscout and Sir VG: I'm totally open to using a patched cart on a console if it could mean 3p instead of 2p at SD3.  Just let me know how that goes.

Raelcun: Okay, I added you and your games to the first post.  I'm not going to lie, though, 14 hours is a really long time, especially with minimal donation incentives, and length vs. donation incentives is one of the things I'm going to ask the reviewers to consider Sad  You said you might have another game to propose...might be a good idea to toss that one into this thread as well (all the reviews and accepts/rejects will happen at the same time, so there won't be any "proposing another game" afterwards).

rinimt: Added you to commentary and general Raelcun-saving for Dragoon.

Everhate and Yagamoth: Thanks Smiley

Mercury: Added you for those commentary gigs.

puwexil: Added you for Soul Blazer commentary.  Please remind me if someone does offer Terranigma that you would like to commentate it, because I'm likely to forget.

Withhelde: Added your games to the list and you to attendance.  But, I didn't understand what you wrote for your time estimate for FFT.  Is it 5 hrs. or 6 hrs., and what does "math skill" mean?  You'll have to elaborate for me what a "no-math run" is, because I have neither run nor even played FFT.

rinimt: Added you as commentary for SO:TtEoT as well.  I don't think we have to worry about each other being okay with commentary at this marathon.  The rules of C4L 2013 still apply at C4L 2014: FF (and now RPG-in-general) marathons NEED good commentary, so more commentators who can rotate and/or keep it fresh is a Good Thing (TM).

duckfist: I added you as an attendee with a note about "weekend only."  I also added FF3 to the list.  I haven't heard back from megakidicarus Sad  But, it sounded like the odds of him making it were roughly up there with the odds of me beating Usain Bolt in a traditional "speed run."  Have to warn you, though: in Canada, it snows on the weekends.  Quick question about FF3: when you say "an exact path" has to be followed, are we talking an "exact path" as in my FFL and FFL2 runs (where every single step and every action in battle has to be exact)?  Because 2:45:00 is a *long* time to pull that off for, especially at a live event...

obdajr: Okay, I've left you off until you throw me some more details.  But, we'd all love to have you back -- it was great meeting you at C4L 2013.  Drop us a line in this thread again once you have some more game/attendance details.

layzerphish: Yup, C4L 2013 was in Edmonton, and C4L 2014 will be as well.  I'm going to enact executive privilege here and straight up cut Link's Awakening; that's too-far removed from the "RPG genre" for an RPG marathon, and there are a billion other marathons that would have that game.  As for Mario RPG, I think that could be a great fit...but, I have to be honest.  One of the criteria I'm going to be asking the referees to judge regarding game selection is, "Is this person a member of the community, or did they just create their account yesterday to get into the marathon?"  You posted without logging in, and your account only has two posts, ever.  If you want to get involved in the SDA community (streaming / game planning / etc.), please do so, and then repost your suggestion of Mario RPG closer to the end of September.  I'll add it to the list then, but I can tell you right now that I would reject game suggestions from people who aren't involved in the community, preferring to give games to people who are streamers / planners / general forum goblins around here.

FFGamer: Added you to those two commentary requests.  And yes, I come from the "broken mess == fun!" school of speedrunning Smiley

romscout: put you down for FF3 commentary.
Thinker & Dreamer
Math skill in FFT is basically the most well-known broken aspect of the game. You earn a class called calculators (with math as their base ability) by getting the four main spellcast classes (B. Mage, W Mage, Oracle, and Time Mage) to a certain job level. What math particularlly does is allow you to hit every enemy and ally with most any spell you know, as long as with falls within certain parameters; such as hitting every unit with a level multiple of 4 with flare, or hitting every unit with a prime experience value with Holy.

As you may imagine, the run basically tries to unlock the calculator class with all the attributes it needs as early as possible, then procedure to almost 1 or 2-shot most every fight in the game.

This may come off as a little tedious, so a no math run does not use calculators and instead uses all the other broken stuff in the game.
Moo! Flap! Hug!
Ahh, cool. So, would I be better to put it down as a any%-vs.-No-Calculators bidding war, or is No-Calculators just plain up better for a marathon?

Let me know, and I'll put it into your game proposal whichever way you prefer (feel free to ask for feedback from others if you want it).
Thinker & Dreamer
Calcs are much more marathon safe (literally, after chapter 1, there's only one fight without assured success (and that's even at 82%) barring some wacky bad luck).

No calcs are more entertaining, but I'm not as experienced with it.

Basically, I'll talk TheClaude for more strats and routes, since I don't think he's attending.
Moo! Flap! Hug!
Based on that description, I'd probably be open to making it a bidding war. Sounds like either could be interesting, just in different ways.

Get back to me in a week or so, once you've spoken to TheClaude, and let me know your decision. I'll update the game proposal in the first post accordingly.
Thinker & Dreamer
Ok, so math run is probably better for this marathon, as no-calc requires knowledge of the Japanese game and much more prone to stuff going wrong (and I rather save the run for TheClaude to do at a marathon).
SDA Speedruns: 1
Not sure if CVagts would agree with me but I think that in either case glitchless route is a better watch than the glitch route mainly because the glitch route will just Bribe the bosses and the glitchless fights them like normal.  Another thing about donation incentive instead of Any% vs 100%(we could still do that) I think we could do a set donation amount to make it 100%(108 stars) (100% is not all items).  So for example it will be Suikoden Any% Glitchless,  $1000 dollars to make it  Suikoden(108 Stars) Glitchless.  The amount can vary depending on our estimates but thats what I was thinking.

With the Any% vs 100% donation incentive you may not get as much I think if 1 side is ahead like 200 to 0 then it may not do as well.  Either way is fine for me.

Regarding the estimates for Suikoden.  The Current (Known) WR is held by CVagts at 3:59 (Glitchless) and my practice runs through the first third of the game are having me on pace with his times. So assuming I can match his 4:00 mark for Suikoden and adding in time for setup + naming and bad RNG. I think we can make the estimate 5 hours for Suikoden Any%
I don't expect to get more than one of these, but I will post them all anyway (in order from most to least desirable for me to play).

A.
1) Final Fantasy IX
2) PS1/PS2
3) 10 hours
4) Naming incentives

B.
1) Final Fantasy X
2) PS2/PS3???
3) 11 hours/??? hours
4) If the HD version has cutscene skips then I could possibly run that to lower the time for this.
Some naming incentives but not many.

C.
1) Final Fantasy X-2
2) PS2
3) 3 1/2 hours (JP) or 5 hours (NA)
4)Could be a donation incentive for JP vs NA (or catnip vs. no catnip which is basically the same thing).
If Augora is coming I would defer this game to her and just do commentary.

D.
1) Final Fantasy VIII
2) PS1/PS2
3) 10 hours
4) Naming incentives, optional bosses

E.
1) Final Fantasy VII
2) PS1/PS2
3) 10 hours
4) Naming incentives, optional bosses
5) I would be using slots.

The NA version of Dark Cloud is much buggier and could potentially be finished in about 40 minutes if a particular glitch could be used in my favour. Unfortunately I don't have that version, though I do have a NA PS2. It'll also require a bunch of research. Let me lay out what this glitch does:

Once you have access to a shop, you can hit right + X at the same time to buy an item which doesn't exist. It takes 30+ minutes to get the first shop. Some of these not-really-items have useful effects (I'm planning on using the Broken Dagger glitch on EU version) and some of them crash the game pretty quickly, but it's possible to get one which breaks the item menu. By breaking the item menu, it's possible for the game to not limit you to its normal boundaries, i.e. usually you have 40 slots for attachments, this glitch makes it much larger. This spills out into normal memory, allowing overwrites of quite a large area. With enough care it's possible to overwrite locations that say which villages you've unlocked, and which Atla you've picked up. It MIGHT be possible to unlock the final dungeon and clear all the floors, then go straight to the end boss and beat him up.

If that's possible, game could be beaten in under an hour.

Yes, I mean an *exact* path.  From power on, every overworld encounter occurs in a predictable sequence.  I have to stop one tile before every encounter and advance the RNG to skip it.  While I hope to have it eventually memorized, I have extensive notes that lay out every encounter with screenshots that I'll likely be referring to on a laptop during the run.  There's a chance I could lose track of where I'm at in the encounter RNG by accidentally advancing it too much - things that can do this are using more than planned healing items, and pressing the d-pad against certain tiles (it'll advance the RNG on each frame you attempt to walk on most water tiles for some reason).  However, the are several locations thoughout the run where I have to power on/off on a specific tile to manipulate the type of encounter coming up, so the RNG is reset and I'll be able to get back on track.  Additionally, I'll have alternate backup-strat-paths listed in my notes in between planned hard-reset locations where I'll hard-reset and start being able to predict encounters again.  It shouldn't be too difficult, but I'll post an update after I've done some full runs in the next few weeks.  I'm confident I can replicate this live on my own hardware.  I'm still making discoveries with the new max-inventory glitch and am tweaking the route - it'll likely get under the 2-hour mark.

Thanks for considering me, though.  I can't wait!  Also Caracarn hype Shocked
Totally understand Pox. I'm more of a lurker around here haha. That being said I would definitely like to come out and help in any way I could, being with donations or behind the scene stuff...OR even just to attend since its so close and would be fun.
Moo! Flap! Hug!
Withhelde: I updated FFT to say that it would probably be a math-run, but the possibility of a math vs. no-math bidding war is there.  We can revisit that at a later time, closer to when we're hammering out final donation incentives.

FFGamer: I updated Suikoden to say that it would likely be a threshold-incentive to switch to 100%.  Those generally work out better anyhow.  Even on games where both types of run are really well-known (FF6 any% vs. 100%), the threshold approach (as opposed to a bidding war) seemed to work, so I don't feel the compulsion to change what works.

Caracarn: Added your games to the list.  Since freshness vs. length and donation incentives vs. length are going to be some of the criteria I'll be asking the reviewers, and then taking your preferences into account, I'd guess that FF9 or FFX-2 would be the ones most likely to be included (unless FFX has cutscene skips, which could totally change everything here -- do you know when we'll know about skips in FFX?).  That said, I'll certainly send all your suggestions to the track reviewers and see what they say.  If Augora gets X-2, I'll try my best to make sure you get one of the others (as I've said, my goal -- who knows if I'll succeed -- is that everyone who wants to play gets to play).  Also put myself down for commentary on FF8, and FFGamer86 as well (since I know he'll ask).  Added you to the attendance list, and looking forward to meeting you!

Lag.Com: If you'd prefer the NA version of Dark Cloud, just let me know and I'll see if I can track it down for you and get it to you.  If you'd prefer the EU version, then feel free to ignore this message.

duckfist: So long as you have backup strats, that's cool.  I was just scared by the notion of a step-perfect 2:45:00 run where mistakes could not be made.

layzerphish: If you just want to attend, you (like other people in that boat) would get first choice on commentary Smiley  That said, I was entirely serious when I asked you to get a little involved (stream, post, plan, whatever), and re-request Mario RPG nearer to the end of September.  I think it would be a great fit.
We require more minerals
Poxnor, I don't actually anticipate LoD to make it, but it was one of those things where I couldn't not offer. How long until the reviews actually happen. I've had another game that I've been looking into for single segment but haven't put a whole lot of time into yet. It would probably work rather well for the marathon if I can get things figured decently well, but knowing how long I have to test things to get a decent estimate would be good.
Moo! Flap! Hug!
Game proposals are due at the end of September 2013.  All the proposals will go out (more or less) at the same time to the reviewers, and the reviews will come back to me (more or less) at the same time, and I'll make all the decisions in one fell swoop (think: giant accept/reject post for every game, all at once).
We require more minerals
Okay that's plenty of time for me to see how realistic of an offer it is. I'll get cracking.
