CRC #2
The Collaborative Routing Challenge!
Hosted by SpeedRunsLive and #rpg
Please watch this brief video explaining the basics of what CRC is:
Update:
The game selection process is now over, and we have chosen Crimson Gem Saga! Routing will now commence and the final teams will be formed this weekend. The race itself is tentatively scheduled for Saturday, December 12th, which should give teams plenty of them to complete their routing and prepare their runner.
Once teams have been formed, each team will elect a leader as an organizer/point of contact for the us. We'll check in every so often to see the progress of each team, so hopefully there won't be any surprises on race day. good luck to all participating!
Premise:
The #rpg on the SpeedRunsLive IRC channel has begun organizing a second CRC (Collaborative Routing Challenge), where we attempt to route an RPG that has no known route in a short time frame. The routing is done by several separate teams, with no help from other teams or people not involved in the challenge.
Routing an RPG from scratch may seem like a lot of work and even discouraging to would-be runners. Through CRC, people can gain experience routing an RPG without taking on the task of a full game by themselves. Its also a chance for a lesser-known game to get exposure, resulting in a route with more variety in strategies than the norm. The event finishes with a SpeedRunsLive race with one team member from each team showing off their team's route.
The process of signing up is simple. You can choose to submit a game you think is worthy of getting a speedrun route and would be fit for this type of challenge. Then you either form a team of 3-4 people, or you throw your name in the ring of people interested in the event and we will assign you to a team of 3-4 people. Then we choose the game, we give everyone 3 days to decide if they want to pursue the challenge based on the game, then the event starts!
Rules + Process:
Anyone can join the CRC event, and if you have any questions you can join #rpg on the speedrunslive IRC. As for rules regarding game submissions, the following guidelines should be considered:
- No known speedrun: A large component of CRC is routing a game that has no known route, allowing for more diverse routes between the teams. It wouldn't be realistic to enforce that no team can use online resources, and at the end of this process it'd be cool for a potential new speedgame to be discovered, so this is the strictest rule we have. If there has been any previous research into a game, include it in the submission and we can decide if it still qualifies.
- Game Length: The first CRC was fortunate enough to pick a relatively short game. It would be difficult to enforce a "only short games allowed" rule without disqualifying most RPGs, so instead we'll take the casual play time into account when picking a game.
- Game Console: The console for the game must be easily emulateable, so basically nothing post-ps2 console-wise. We picked a DS game last time, which worked out well enough, though some people had issues with it.
- Language: We will only pick a game that has an English release, whether its official or a patch.
Other than that, you can give a blurb about why you think the game would be a good choice, and we'll take it into account in the selection process.
The process itself will have a preliminary round, where we disqualify games that violate any of the above rules, and then we will do an on-stream deliberation, going through each remaining game. If we do not come to a final decision during the stream it will be soon after, with more discussion happening in #rpg.
Forming Teams:
You have the option of signing up as a full team, or entering a random hopper. Depending on if you're a pre-formed team or a randomly assigned one, the team dynamic might differ. Just keep in mind that everyone will probably have conflicting schedules, so a way of collaborating without everyone being online at the same time is key. There is also a real chance that someone may end up not contributing at all, but don't hold any personal grudge over it, a part of having a 4 person team is that you'll still have a couple of collaborators even if someone is a no-show. That being said, try not to be that person. Once announcing the game you'll have a few days to back out, so if you aren't feeling the game or your schedule isn't working out, don't worry about it.
Race:
The date of the race will be decided at a later time, but will be roughly one month after the event begins. Each team must choose who will represent themselves in the race, the earlier the better so that the racer has as much time to prepare as possible. It is also a good idea to have an alternate in case that member cannot make it for the race.
CRC #1 Results:
The previous CRC chose Valkyrie Profile: Covenant of the Plume, with 4 teams of 4 doing the routing. The results were:
1st: Dorter Slumlords with 2:16:58
2nd: Dana's Special Snowflake Menu with 2:32:43
3rd: Shikuku's Wrath with 3:05:05
4th: ACE in the Hole with 3:13:16
How to get involved:
We're currently accepting both game submissions and sign-ups. You do not need to sign up to submit a game, so if you know of an RPG that has not yet been run, let us know!
