Hey guys, I know this really isn't speedrun related, but I'm having loads of trouble and don't really know where else or what site to post this.

My friend and I both acquired GLQuake (not sure which version is best) for Quake 1, and want to play co-op online (one of us creates a server or something and the other just connects).

Is this possible? We want to be able to run through the solo missions together (maybe for some fast times later on) but can't seem to connect to each other. It doesn't seem possible to create anything other than Local games.

So... help!?  Do we need special mods/programs? Is there an easy way to go about doing this? Undecided

One of the ways we use to do coop speedruns and such is by installing Hamachi. Basically any two computers on the same Hamachi network 'pretend' they are on a LAN. This makes it much easier to connect to each other. You only need the free version, and the tutorials are pretty good.

The real way of doing it is by forwarding the correct port on your router (Quake uses 26000 TCP & UDP correct me if I'm wrong). This is router-specific, you can find more if you don't know how to do it here.

Well we've tried a billion things but it still isn't working.

We both downloaded Hamachi (cant really get far into the tutorial because the server it says to connect to - "test" is always full. We can connect to each other on Hamachi and ping each other.... but we don't see each other in our Network Places. Should we be able to?

After failing with this, we both tried port forwarding and did it to port 26000 on both our routers, but still can't play Quake together. We've tried using a bunch of commands, disabling firewalls, using GLQuake and GLProQuake but still get the same "Trying... Still Trying... No response" message.

It's so depressing  Cry

Whenever you're online, add network: 'lag_quake', password: 'quad' to your list, and we'll play around and see if we can fix it.

You probably shouldn't be able to see each other in My Network Places... especially if either of you have clicked the 'block vulnerable Windows services' option in Hamachi. You might need to start Quake with the specific IP Hamachi assigns you or it won't bind to it. For instance, my command line is this:
joequake-gl -ip 5.60.119.195 -width 1024 -height 768 -bpp 32 -window -winmem 64 -game qdqstats

I'm not sure if the iD clients support the -ip parameter, but both joequake and joequake-gl do, and we recommend those for speedrunning anyway.

If the -ip tag doesn't work, you can assign a higher priority to the Hamachi network adapter. To do that, go into Network Connections -> Advanced menu -> Advanced Settings and move the 'Hamachi' adapter to the top. Bear in mind that might impair some programs and their network functions, however I never ran into a problem with it myself (and I recommend downloading joequake anyway, even if you don't want to use it for speedrunning).

Hey guys, thanks for all the help. Much progress has been made today!

So the command that uses our Hamachi IP in Quake seemed to fix the major problem pretty well. We can now join each other's games. The only problem is that the connection is extremely laggy and one of us (the host) usually lags out, even setting Hamachi as the top priority. When we ping each other in Hamachi, everything's fine.

If my friend hosts, I can walk around a little, then the icon appears that shows a cord coming out of the wall, then I can move a little more eventually but may stay frozen for another 30 seconds. This repeats but one of us times out after a little while. At this point, it's unplayable, but we're getting closer for this to work.

We both just downloaded a ton of stuff (Quake shareware, ProQuake and JoeQuake). Maybe with all this we'll be able to co-op it up! Stay tuned

Edit: Hey guys, everything is working! Slight lag every now and then for my buddy when he connects to me, but overall, its working great! Thanks for all the help. And JoeQuake >>> all other versions

Pleased to be of service. I hope you guys can join us for some madcoop later on! We all meet on #qdq on irc.quakenet.org if you want a chat.
Interesting!
