Just thought I would let everyone know I will be streaming lots of Contra starting on September 12th (I'm at work until then). Trying to bring down my time from 10:55 to sub 10:30. I also talked to TheMexicanRunner and we are going to be doing a full day of Contra races (Any% and Low% - also I want to start running Fire%, think it would be fun to make some new categories officially) so anyone is more than welcome to join us! Message me here or on twitch (www.twitch.tv/deuceler) if you are interested - I'd like to get a monthly race set up!
That's awesome Deuceler! I've started getting back into this game again, but off stream. I only do short sessions of attempts whenever I have time. Fire is cool, but what do you mean by "officially"?
Well unless I'm wrong I though the only categories we have right now are Any% and Low% (as well as co-op). I know people have fooled around with F and L only before - I just assumed we all had to agree on making another category. Basically making it "official" by having it on the leaderboards here, getting SDA submission etc. I think it would be cool to open the game up to some different things in that regard. We could start racing it and doing runs. The only thing I've been pondering is whether or not you would have to make it deathless as well - so if you lost your F you would have to reset, unless in a run. I'm under the assumption pea shooter would be more efficient. Just an idea.
I see. Fire will never be an SDA category though. Picking a specific weapon and making it a new category is not in line with SDA rules (it's either use any weapon or use no weapon/pickup). It's fine for races though! And you do bring up a good point about deaths. Think about low%, if you accidentally pick up an item the run is over. Being that strict for races would kind of kill the fun though.
Never assume anything. EVER! Also one person cant make a new category. It must be a community thing. And given how this game is, I dont see it happening. Any% and Low% is all this game has to offer.
I dont think any other weapon could beat low% other than spread to be honest just based on how each weapon functions.
That's what I figured on all accounts heid/blat. Would still be fun to race though, pick that F up in Jungle and cringe with fear every level. Sounds like you and I have a race date with destiny Hurblat!
Hey thanks deuceler! Cool to hear you guys are gonna do some races! I'm probably gonna focus on AGDQ practice for the potential games I've pitched, but if I end up getting sick of practicing on a day you're all doing races, I'll try to join in!
hmmmmmm. Well, TMR and I raced for 7 hours Thursday and it was super fun! Heidrage joined us for a couple races (I may have beat him in an Any% race Kappa) including a Flame only. TMR and I were talking about Flame only quite a bit - it's not a good category for racing AT ALL. The stipulations are to severe, and dying to get pea shooter is far to easy and makes it quicker. We were talking about running a category called " Flame% Deathless", which would be hardcore and very frustrating - but would entail collecting the flame at the beginning of the jungle and, you guessed it, beating the game without dying. Could be a little something fun to do, if you guys would like to partake. TMR got the best of me during our races, I am WAY out of Contra shape, but I'm looking to get back into it hard. TMR ran one sub 11 during races and my best time was a 11:04 - so not a bad day.
We will be doing races either Monday or Tuesday of next week (September 16/17th) so it would be cool to see people join us!!
The first is that using turbo/auto fire is not considered cheating, but runs using that will be put in a different table. The second is that I decided it would be nice to track if people are playing on console or emulator. If emulator, which emulator. The third is that TheMexicanRunner got a 10:24, putting him at 4th place!
Thought I would throw this out there - TMR and I have been debating whether grabbing the barrier in the Hangar is quicker then skipping it or not. I did some testing, and made sure I had "perfect" luck for both scenarios (no barrier meaning you had good claws and didn't need to wait). Well, after slowing it down I found you actually save 108 frames by grabbing the barrier and taking the bottom route (note that this was AFTER jumping up to grab the barrier), which is damn near two seconds. I haven't tested the exact frames it takes to grab the barrier, but it's pretty quick - thus this could feasibly save some time in the hangar. The only reason I think it may save time is due to the ability to skip the claws directly after the barrier pickup (which so many times makes you wait) It is also a much safer route for those beginning the game or who don't feel confident in their mashing ability while taking the top route. I will make some videos displaying these things, and others I've been messing with if you guys are interested. I know this is usually Mr.K's forte, but it's just so fun.
I also want to make a video comparing emulator to console. In my opinion emulator allows you to mash quicker and spread rhythm is easier to obtain. There is no way to really prove this, but my methods for spread rhythm haven't changed and it's much faster on emulator when practicing. I will see if I can get something made up
