I've updated the old guide and now hosting it on my blog as it is easier to manage there. It now covers virtually any DirectShow capture card and moves from VirtualDub to AmaRecTV for capturing.

Interlaced capture: http://www.thethrillness.com/2014/03/capturing-and-encoding-video-for-sda.html (Composite or S-Video sources)
Progressive capture: http://www.thethrillness.com/2014/07/capturing-and-encoding-video-for-sda.html (Mostly HDMI but also for 480p via Component)

I've also written a guide on capturing and live streaming simultaneously: http://www.thethrillness.com/2015/02/guide-live-stream-and-capture.html

Looks pretty good so far.
Willing to teach you the impossible
Just read everything in it so far, and I like it.

Thanks guys, gonna recommence work on this either later tonight or tomorrow and then hopefully copy/paste everything to the first forum post for easier reading/navigation. Also realised I probably should have not used lossless pngs for screenshots, jpg's would have sufficed. Will convert the screenshots to jpgs when I begin work to.

Pffft... pngs all the way! JPG artifacts on windows explorer type of pics are the worst. And actually, it doesn't sound right that the pics should be that large, they're more or less graphically non-complex......... *googles* Well, here's the reason why the rtf is so large: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/224663
thethrillness.blogspot.com
Ah. I'll keep png then for the official forum post then. I began to wonder how like average size 100kb pngs were adding up to 22mb when I had only used 18 in total.

I got it working! My EzCap came really fast and I am now able to finally record my final run. Just one question, is there a way to make virtualdub set a new capture file every time, my god having to change the name every time is annoying. It wasn't in the guide.

Capture->Autoincrement filename after capture
You can also set a default capture file by going to file->set capture file... and then ticking the box that says "Set this capture filename as default".

Updated first post with a complete guide and added in Tranquilite information.

Nice guide. I bought an EasyCAP a while back and since it was very cheap it's probably a fake. I wonder if someone could tell me if this quality is acceptable by SDA (if you choose 480p):

Captured with Ulead. I'm thinking the audio quality is not good enough..

Btw, does the new EzCAP also have overheating problems?

EDIT: I just said screw it and bought an official one now from Ebay. The sound is obviously not good in my video.
+2 against silly
Definitely a very good guide, and it actually works for more than just the EzCAP. One can assume it works for just about any USB composite capture card -- at least, it worked for my random Win/Mac compatible card. Be interesting to find out whether the process is the same for internal cards too. It makes sense if it does.

Ace, the new EzCAP should not have any overheating issues. I think this was an issue with fake EzCAP's only.

ashe_bug, thank you. Yes you are correct. This guide can really be used for any card (internal or external) as long as the drivers are installed and not software locked (eg HD PVR with Total Media Extreme). You would really just have to start from step 5. I have just guided this towards EzCAP so people lacking the technical knowledge have an easier time for recording.

When I have the audio settings the same as yours, I get audio sync issues anyways and have to adjust it manually after recordings. Is this normal or is there actually a way to fix this?

There should not be any sync issues on the captured file. How are you playing the video file back?

Only thing I can think of is that the virtualdub framerate has not been set correctly (eg PAL game recorded at 29.97 or vice versa). Another thing could be dropped frames (did you track this?) but cranking the RAM up should have made that a non issue (unless you were doing lots of work on your pc while capturing).

Out of 5 recordings, the audio would be late by anywhere from 200ms to 900ms... not sure why it's a random amount every time. The framerate is set to 29.9700 in Vdub and my signal is NTSC. Also in all my recordings, I did not drop any frames and my RAM shouldn't be an issue (~6GB of 8GB free during recordings).

While doing more research myself I figured out that most of the options for Timing you do not need to tick. Try setting these and if they work I'll reupdate the guide. It might be a null frame insertion issue.

I guess you could try another capture program like Amarec. Really confused of your situation. Did you use online drivers or CD ones? Did you try changing the driver in the guide?

"Open up Device Manager then go to Sound, video and game controllers. Locate the USB EMP Audio Device. Right click and go to Update Driver software. Select browse my computer for driver software then let me pick from a list. Click the top option (USB Audio Device) and then Next. It should install and playback audio fine now."

Also can you by any chance encode a sample from anri and post here? Wanna view it myself. If you have any RE games (especially RE4) use that as a sample since I know the timing for that game.
B+Left, Left, Up+B, ★
Yeah I've installed the drivers before. I did it again anyways, but it still doesn't change anything. I attached 2 tests encoded from anri from RE4 to show you what I mean from the audio desync not being consistent. Test 2 is significantly more delayed than the audio in test 1, even though no options have changed (just closed vdub and reopened it).

Yip I see what you mean. Any chance of trying the EzCAP on a different machine?

The only last thing I can think is to screencap the virtualdub window after say 10 seconds have elapsed on two different recordings and we will see if we can see a significant change in any numbers.
B+Left, Left, Up+B, ★
I tried the ezcap in my laptop, but the audio kept skipping and sounded awful. My laptop isn't all that great though, but despite that there weren't any dropped frames.

I took 5 snapshots of a recording on my PC at 10 seconds in each time; I'll attach them to this post.

Think I know the error. The audio recording is 96Khz, set it to 48Khz. Surprised it even recorded that well on RE4 tests. When I used 96Khz I would get audio but it would either be really fast or too slow or desynch. I really hope this is the problem as everything else on the screenshots look fine.

From guide: Click Audio and then Raw capture format. Select PCM: 48000Hz, stereo, 16-bit then click OK.
