Note: I will update this first post often.

CGDR: Canadian Games Done Respectfully is coming!

When: It will be held in early March 2014, between February 28th and March 10th. It is the Canadian spring break.

Where: It will probably be in Ottawa.

Who: Canadian speedrunners are invited! If you are interested in joining the marathon, post in this thread.

What: The schedule is yet to be done, since we don't know exactly who is going to come yet. The marathon will most likely last somewhere between 36 and 60 hours, though.

Why: Its goal would be to raise money for charity (the exact cause has yet to be determined, Canadian Red Cross would be a good idea).

Why was it postponed? It couldn't be done on time with sufficient installations for a somewhat big event. At first the idea was to stay small, and there was so much interest it couldn't be in someone's basement.

So far, here are the people that could potentially be there (no one is 100% confirmed because the date is still a little bit unclear):

Get the Super Mario Bros. 3 world champion MitchFlowerPower to join, he is canadian!

Edit: Also ask Inzult to come, he is the previous world champion on Zelda 2! They both have accounts here on SDA, just pm them!
I would really like to go, but I don't think I could afford to make the trip.  I'll do what I can to help out from off-site though.
Other people you should consider asking to come are Poxnor, Rggibson and Obdajr, although I think they are all on the west side of Canada.  If I remember correctly, Poxnor and Rggibson also recently moved, so it might be a bit tough on them to travel that far.
Ya, Calgary is unfortunately a bit of a hike to Montreal.... sadly.
This is interesting Shocked And not far from home Cheesy
I'm willing to run some Spyro during the event, if you guys are interrested Wink
Either Spyro 2 100% or Spyro 3 117% would be my suggestions.

Oh hell yes.  It's only in Montréal, so it shouldn't be too much of a hike for me from Toronto.  I have a couple of ideas on what I'd want to run.
I wouldn't be able to go for the August dates, but the October ones sound fine.
i'm definitely interested in this

Oh shit this is generating even more interest than I thought! Right now the biggest problem we have is the need to find a good place to host the marathon at. So far, the best place we have found for it is... my house. Actually, my parents' house. While there would be room for a lot of people, it's not really in a state to receive more than about 6 people and my installations for streaming are very minimal. This means getting another place to do it at is essential. I am going to Université de Montréal in two weeks and I will try to ask if it would be possible to rent one of their rooms for 2 days to do the marathon, but I am not too sure it could work. We will probably have to find some place else... If anyone has a house or another place to hold the marathon in, please say it here or PM me!

If this was closer, I would try to make it. But I'm all the way west in canada. I will do what I can to help off-site as well
i'm a GOD
I'd love to go but I'm short on cash atm, but I'm hype as hell for this marathon. Smiley

omg I will try as hard as I can to go to this

Lag-Mégantic relief seems like a great cause, if we can get set up with a charity organization that's helping out with it.

Raising funds for people to go to AGDQ in an in-person marathon doesn't really make sense to me because some of us will be spending money travelling to said in-person marathon already. That kind of stuff seems best left for online-only marathons.

Moo! Flap! Hug!
This is as odd a theme as I've ever seen for a marathon Smiley

I have to agree that people spending money to travel to a marathon whose purpose is to raise money for people to travel to another marathon is...circular. But, perhaps raising money to help with the recent disasters in Lac-Mégantic and in the Calgary area could be a good cause? I think the Canadian Red Cross is raising money for both. But, if you decide to go with the Canadian Red Cross, you'll want to contact them ASAP. Being a big charity, they move at a bit of a slower pace.

Cheers

Oooh, oh, pick me, I'm Canadian!

I'm with everyone else on the 'raising funds for travel when it will cost me travel money is a bit redundant' boat.

I'd definitely be interested in some kind of Canadian meetup (whether or not its even a marathon or raising funds for anything or not, I'd be down to go), and I'm pretty sure I could make the October dates work.

I live in Waterloo, which is just west of Toronto, and have a car, so I could probably pick up people in the GTO/Ottawa areas if they're on the way.

Universities are often better set-up for that type of thing in the summer when most of the students are away (and thus you can also rent dorm rooms for reasonably cheap as well), but there's no harm in asking around.

I could pick up Psychonauts or DKCR again, or otherwise I've also been playing around with Dust: An Elysian Tale, Dark Souls, Journey to Silius and Kabuki Quantum Fighter (SDA tourney represent), and could easily whip them into shape over the next 2 months or so.

Depending on the date, I can try and make it to run some stuff (Super Punch-Out, Hook (SNES), TMNT2, X-Men: MA, ARES, whatever). October would be harder for me to get to but August would most likely work if you're going for that.

So sign me up as a maybe until the date is more set in stone?

If it's gonna be august 16 it's gonna be very very small, so I would advise against coming from Toronto and farther. I posted it here to see if there would be interest and the interest is so gigantic I fear I will have to accept only a fraction of you guys. Or maybe someone could help me with all this and we could find a place, set things up and all... right now it's still at a very early state and all of this hype is a bit terrifying!
Moo! Flap! Hug!
I'd advise against the August date if you don't have things arranged with a charity already, because two weeks is not enough time to sort things out with them.  Allow yourself at the very least a month; preferably a few months.

I'd definitely be interested in participating if I had more than $5 to my name right now, I might have the money by the time it rolls around, we'll see. Anyway it does seem like a very good idea and I'll hop on both of the trains by saying raising money for travel expenses for AGDQ 2014 when it's going take travel expenses to get to the marathon is redundant. Letting the online marathons handle that seems like a better idea. As well, doing it in August leaves very little time for any one to plan and seeing how it's so soon after SGDQ finished people are probably going be a little short on cash.

If you need help, I can try and make things happen for you. I help run the logistics side of a company that focuses on gaming events (usually for profit, but I can probably talk my boss into helping a charity event).

I sent you a PM regarding that, but I'm sure I can help to find a way to get this running.
aka theenglishman
I'm up for running Papo & Yo (PC version) for the marathon.  It's not too hard to learn, has great visuals and can provide for some interesting commentary.
Worthless categories WR master
Since this has grown so much, raising money for AGDQ trips is indeed out of the question now. Full-on charity marathon!
hey man I'd love to do a mmx run
if it's in october, that is. my mmx speedrun is crap atm
I live in vancouver, so its not too far for me.
