Well this kinda thing just burns me as a gamer.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/4223361/

Seriously, I really don't think any of this is neccesary. Some things they should just stay away from.
Thread title:
If it is simply voice acting then i don't mind, but as long as they don't base any character on the actor.
But they are...
dinosaur from the past
Screw that topic... an evil nurse? An EVIL NURSE???
This is yet another reason to play Mario or Zelda over your average game.
Sleeping Terror
No love for Micheal Jackson's Moonwalker here, I can see.

(Just because there's a new news article does not mean that this practice is in any way new.)
True. But its getting worse.
PwNzRd!
Agreed. However, you must note that James Bond WILL have to use celebrity characters since it is off of movies. Now, if say, Samuel L. Jackson was Carl Johnson for San Andreas (despite the fact he kicks ass sans "The Man") it would ruin the whole point. Samuel L. Jackson is not a street thug, he's a multi-million dollar actor.
I'd kill for a nobel peace prize...
Damn..... and next think ya know Sephiroth is gonna be voice acted by, like, Lance Bass from NSYNC or something. If that happens I'm just gonna flip out.....

Wow...look at him go. He just got some real bad news.

Lmao trinexx...

I agree with StrangenessDSS; no matter how fervently I fight it, the general public is the general public, and it will always fuel popularity contests and celebrity egos [so that this kind of thing is possible]...

Though, for the record, it might be a difficult contest as the real celebrities for movies are their respective actors, while for videogames, at the moment, the celebrities are our fabricated franchise icons, like Dante, Samus, and Master Chief.

But he was in GTA San Andreas. He voiced Officer Tenpenny.

give me your eyes!!!
...who was a complete bastard but at least not a 'player-controlled' complete bastard.
I think that's what the article is alluding to.

I thought that game was cool many years ago. Then I replayed it recently and realised that he runs around saving really small children who are hiding in closets and stuff. Not good.

I don't really care if celebrities get involved. I will continue playing the games I like, and if that happens to include someone famous then so be it.
Fucking Weeaboo
They mentioned Jet Li, but nobody's mentioned that Jackie Chan had a game back in the NES days.  It's been TASed too.  Really weird game. ^^;;

Bruce Lee, too. But that was back in the C64 days.

Well I didn't wanna start another topic with this so I'll just put it in here. Product Placement in games. Its been going on for awhile.

Examples: The Pizza Hut signs all over TMNT 2 on NES.

The Soap Logos all over Sonic Adventure 2.

And there's probably some I forgot.

You see those kind of things often in racing games also..
even Pikmin 2

Ok, racing games I can understand. There mostly trying to simulate what's seen on TV, and how ads are plastered all over the cars.

But Pikmin...?

Yeah, one of the first things you do is pick up a Duracell battery IIRC.
PwNzRd!
Samuel L. Jackson voiced a cop in San Andreas but the cop wasn't based off of Samuel L. Jackson. 007 is based off of Pierce Brosnan.
Mark Hammel voiced Wolverine in Wolverine's Revenge.

...It was not very convincing...

Wasn't Carl Johnson voiced by a rapper or something, though?  [No idea whether the character reflects the rapper, but still...]
Hey, not all product placement is bad. I smiled at every Dole banana in Super Monkey Ball.
PwNzRd!
Very true; sometimes proper placement can actually enhance the game experience, since you can relate to it.
