Hello everyone,
I'm ArqIsRandom but call me Arq (the nickname is already taken, but nevermind), and I'm French, so sorry if my English is not perfect, I'm gonna do my best.

I'm creating this thread because I'm working on a Hotel Mario speedrun. Surely you would ask "Why the f*ck do you want to speedrun this game ?". Well, it's surely the game I mostly played in my childhood, I love it, really. I never finished it (7th Hotel 13th Stage, 2 stage before the last boss). And today, I can't save anymore on my CD-I, so it's hard to get through the whole game (and for another reason that I will explain, if I make a mistake, it will be very hard to finish it).

Short presentation :
Hotel Mario is a plateform game where the goal is to close all doors of each stage.

Screenshot of a stage

Controls :
Left/Right : Move left, move right (yeah, it's obvious)
Button 1 : Jump, Activate the elevator (when Mario is in an elevator).
Button 2 : Close door.
Button 3 : Throw fireball (when Mario has Fire Flower).
Up : Entering in a door/elevator
Down : Leaving a door/elevator

There's 3 things scary in the game :

#1 The timer & Monsters respawning : When you kill monsters in the game, some of them can respawned at the same floor, so if you're at the last floor and you're going to close the last door, an ennemy can respawned on the first floor and opening a door. So you have to do the whole stage in reverse to close the door at the first floor. BUT, maybe when you're going to close this door, an ennemy is going to respawn on another floor, etc.
And the timer continue to turn, and turn, and... oh, you're dead.
Also, about monsters respawning, they can get out of an open door when you're going to close it, and lose your fire flower/mushroom/life. Great.
I think you get it now.

#2 Floors & Jumping : When you're jumping, Mario has his head going through the floor just above his head. So you can get hit by a monster that is just on the floor above by jumping. So you can be in awkward moment when you have an ennemy in front of you, and one just above him, walking with the same speed, in the same direction.

#3 Hitbox : Hitbox are not that bad, but they are not that good. Sometimes, it can makes you really really mad and want to throw your controller (well, it's available for #1 & #2).

For the moment, I'm working on an Any% speedrun.

The route is simple :
- Warp : 1-6 => 3-3
- Warp : 3-5 => 6-8
- The remaining part of the game (6-8 to 7-15).
Thread title:
Hi Arq! Glad to see you here, I wish you good luck for speedrunning this awsome *cough cough* game ^_^
More seriously, I can't wait to see a run of this game that I don't know that much

Hi A-M, thanks you !
Actually I'm working about the position of power-ups of each stage in the 7th Hotel. In a real good run, It won't be useful to know that, because I musn't lose my Fire Flower. But it's nice to know their positions if I play in live, and I lose my power-up. Also, It will permits me to don't have to reset the console each time I get hit/die when I'm training.
When I'll be more comfortable, I will study respawn timing of monsters, and their movement/action. I don't know if monsters are full scripted or scripted + a part of random depending of my timing. Well, I still have some questions, and things to study about this game. ^_^

I played one credit yesterday and I have new informations.

I almost finished the game in one life but I failed at the boss, then lose 12 lifes and finally beat the game for the first time OF MY LIFE (so it's only a 1 credit, yeah I had ~15 lifes at this point of the game).

I timed this run and:

- first warp : 4:28, pretty good.
- second warp : 6:20, pretty good.
- Wendy (boss of the 6th hotel) : 14:04, good.
- The end : ~54 minutes if I didn't die. I would judge this part as "good", but would be "very good" if I didn't lose my powerups that much.

I learned a little about the respawn "system".
The maximum respawn of ennemies seems to be 2 times, in function of the ennemy, it can be fast or slow. So I have to wait on some floors to wait, ennemies to respawn to kill them 1 or 2 more times and then go to the next floor. I have to find some tricks to go faster.
I just realized that I have to be patient on Hotel Mario to don't lose my powerups or die (for the moment).
And to finish this feedback, the movement of ennemies can change in function of my timing, what I do, etc.

For the moment, my goal is to trully one life this, and losing as less possible my powerups. I have some ideas to improve times for some places.

Also, I'm gonna search a Dazzle that a friend can lend it to me to record some runs, or buy one.

Go for it! This needs to be recorded for proof of insanity.

Hotel Mario is seriously underappreciated. It usually gets lobbed into the same pot as the Zelda CD-i games (which also aren't as bad as the people who never played em are making them out to be - except for the third one. That one is just atrocious), but Hotel Mario is actually a genuinely fun game.

Glad someone's running it!

I just finished it in One Life (Didn't played Hotel Mario since my last post) ! I'm happy about that.
I need to play more "solid" now, but I havn't that much time to do real training these days, so I'm waiting my friend to lend me his Dazzle to record some games, and then I will study better what I can do or not.
