I can't remember my best time, but I know I got Excalibur and Positron Rifle with Soma, using Claihm Solais, Dracula's Tunic, Dracula's Ring (I think), and using the souls Red Minotaur, Headhunter and Death. Collecting orbs at only a few places, namely before Death and Balore, and if I have very little mana.
My best Boss Rush is listed in my latest Full game run...sort of...
At the beginning of each segment, pay attention when I hover over save file #1...that's where it's listed (and honestly, I don't remember what it is...)
This is the best I could do for proof. I will probably beat it later on, as I have a few tricks up my sleeve.
Also, I am tempted to beat your Story Record, Dragondarch. I have estimated that there are 11 minutes of errors in your movie, mostly due to bad paths/randomisations. If I can get access to a GC with a GBA platform and whatnot, I'll prove it.
Also it makes me wonder if getting all the crap you need to get the sky fish soul might actually save time vs the last three bosses... you said yourself you had enough mana stuff.

Killing Legion, getting Galamoth soul, then killing the Chronomage until you get its soul, going to a room where Sky Fish is, hope that it will appear where you enter and use the Chronomage soul, and then repeat until it actually coughs up its soul...
Some rare enemies have a near 100% chance to cough up their souls. The rabbit, soul fish, the golem that is only harmed by one other soul are examples. I got all of them in my first try.
The route includes the catacombs anyway to get the flame demon soul, so additional time needed here is only the part killing legion, which is neither hard nor long since you already have the claimh solais at that point.
Only the extension of the route to the rabbit and afterwards back to the soul fish are maybe too much (plus stopping time exactly the instant the fish is on screen is not easy).
No offense Dragondarch, but your run IS full of mistakes and lacks little timesavers.
For one, you don't even seem to be aware of the double-wall jump bug. http://217.215.87.40/no_undine.html But the description is bad. You have to hold against the wall for about half a second to get a few pixels higher.
Plus, you kill way too damn many enemies. Even if you might get very few levels extra to help against the later boss battles, you lose TOO much time killing enemies (you even stop your movement for most enemies...)
Plus, you can't even kill enemies like curly without waiting 5/7 seconds to make it stand far enough from you.
Plus, you don't backdash your way through the castle. (yes, just jump at the end of your dash...)
Plus, you kill too many bosses in your Julius run... I have yet to get off my lazy ass and beat your run.
Actually, Chronomage is WAY out of the way after killing Legion...only 2 ways up there really, one would require I fight Headhunter since I normally don't, and the other isn't even remotely close to my current route. Not to mention you'd have to back track a shitload to find a Sky Fish (2 rooms I know of that it appears in...both in Reservoir I believe) after getting Chronomage...the sheer time from backtracking and going out of the way would negate anything you save on those last 3 bosses. Plus, exactly how do you plan on killing off Legion quickly at such a low level? He has high HP and even with Claimh Solais you aren't gonna go through it that quickly.
That, and maybe YOU got them to cough up souls your first try, but not every one is so lucky. Chronomage usually takes me up to 50 kills to get it, Sky Fish (out of the times I use Chronomage at the right time) normally takes a good 20-30 minimum...and the last time I got Iron Golem it also took over 20 tries. Granted, if you feel like adding even MORE randomness to a run on this game, I ain't stoppin' ya...
McBain: I killed 4 bosses in my Julius run...and I said in the commentary specifically:
Quote:
4 was still a fairly easy fight, and I was able to knock off 2.5 minutes by skipping 1 boss. I tried 3 and was able to make it to Graham in 5.5 minutes, but my stats were to low to have a fast Graham fight.
The times came out to be exactly the same with 3 or 4 bosses, the difference being I was able to make up a little time on the Graham fight with higher stats.
You want to know how much time I spent planning that one? 30 minutes, tops. If I had REALLY wanted to put a couple weeks effort into an 8 minute run I would have.
On that same note: You have any idea how much time I put into BOTH story mode runs I did...about 45 minutes of planning both times, and about 2-3 hours to do the actual run, both times. Again, if I really wanted to spend wekks and months trying to get the "Perfect" run I would.
As for killing too many enemies...yes I know a couple levels ain't gonna make no difference - I was 2 levels lower than my last run and all the bosses were just as easy...thanks for stating the obvious.
On that same note: watch my old run and compare...no where near as many killed this time around. And as for stopping my movement...not exactly like you can dodge everything without taking damage...and those things that take 3+ hits to kill require stopped movement or taking damage, which will stop movement anyway. Anything that takes more than 1 hit to kill will stop movement regardless unless you've got some way around it.
Double Wall Jump bug: And this would save me time where else other than entering floating garden early? Where else is those couple of pixels gonna save that much time...remember, you need Undine to get Claimh Solais and the only time you're even remotely close to the waterfall is the ONE time you're in the Reservoir. Other than that you'd be going much too far out of your way to get your hands on it.
Backdash Idea I hadn't thought of...will be in the next improvement.
Curly: Not even gonna comment since I already KNEW I could have tried to attack earlier...but after repeating this segment at least 3x as many times as any other due to 30% deaths / 70% no Curly Soul I was rather sick of the death restarts...so I went a little cautious so the ONLY reason I'd be restarting would be from bad randomness.
Lastly, If you think you can beat my run, go right ahead. I set a bar...that's all. When ya do I'll be the first to congratulate you...also I'll probaly actually get serious and put a decent amount of time into a run...you see - I'm a lazy bastard as well. When I desire something I make it happen...when I'm just doing it for fun I don't always put 100% effort in to it. It's good to see I've sparked some interest in this game as well. I was rather hoping it wouldn't be just me taking shots at the time.
That's weird, I really got those souls on first try... all three of them. Thus I thought, if they are that hard to find/hard to figure out how to kill, it's only fair they increased the soul drop.

Very weird.
Hehe, I only WISH that were the case...Flame Demon would be sooooo much easier to get
You can beat my most recent Hard mode run (54:34) by 11 minutes? By all means...prove it
As I said, if i had a GC, GB platform, and cable, I would. My current personal record is 51:2x on normal, but it was segmented and I've already deleted it to try a 100% game. If I recreate it, I'll get a pic and post my game time. You'll have to take my word that I don't use glitches :-/
And McBAIN, I've already told you that backdashing isn't really that much faster in a speedrun. You'd have to train yourself with it, since it's fully optimal when you backdash for 8 frames and jump for one, which is something that is very difficult out of emulation.
Firstly, not getting the undine PLUS not getting the claim solais saves a lot of time. since you actually do not need to enter the inner quarters at all! Forget aout the claihm solais, getting all that shizzle takes up too much time. i found getting the laeviathan from the arena was a good alternate. maybe not as much power, but it sre saved me a lot of time.
still, i think you kill too many enemies, imo. yes i know that you've decreased the amount of enemies in your new run, but... i still think it's too much. you might have planned this out, but i said you killed too much bosses with julius as well. well, i didn't realize you only killed 4 bosses, but that's one more than me, and 1 too much. i tried many different amounts of bosses for my run (in actual runs) so i know which is the best (3 bosses) and i tried this out after your run as well.
as i thought, i got a better time than you. i don't remember what my time was, but i think it was about a minute faster.
i haven't tested out if killing less enemies is faster... but... i'm pretty sure. as for the stopping the movement and the curly shit... if you can't kill curly's (and nemesis, too, just watched a bit of the video again) without taking damage..... well then sorry but i'm gonna have to say you need to train more. waiting for so long is inexcusable since you have segments. just train more..... and use more subweapons!
i rarely see you use subweapons. if see you fight against some enemies and miss 5 times or something. if you know you're gonna have trouble with it, just throw out some long distance weapon.... really, if you want to make a speedrun for a game, you have to be very skilled at the game, and you have to train more... if you're gonna make a mediocre speedrun, you'll look bad.
anyway, i'm not gonna try and beat your record. i don't have a capturecard and don't have a gba player. plus, i'm currently helping someone else who's planning on making a run for it. (not Zurreco)
