Hi! I'm new to these forums, as I am a bit to the speedruners guild.
Since always I have watched and been amazed by speedruns, but now that I am in my way of mastering Castlevania 1, I have been looking around for speedruns of the second quest and found none.
Maybe Im just a big a newb, or too lazy, or its just bad luck, but Im really interested in the matter, and I would even try to achieve a good run and compete with the crowd.
I would also like to watch videos of No hit runs and Only whip runs for the second quest, and try to get better in those aspects.
I have watched mecha´s run for the first quest and it is frigging amazing what he did, but in the second run there are questions that arise, as you begin already with 3rd whip and item of your choice, things can run differently.
There is also at least 1 damage boost that is impossible in 1st quest.
Well, I hope this hasnt been discussed before and Im just clogging tha forums.
Thanks for your answers in advance!
Thread title:
The main reason you don't see runs of the 2nd cycle on old CV games is that runs her at SDA must be done on the original console, and if your run goes bad and you have to reset (something that will happen with great frequency especially with such a difficult run), old CV games do not start back up on the 2nd cycle.

So basically you would have to beat the entire game, get 1 shot at running the 2nd cycle and if you fail (extremely likely) you'd have to reset and beat the whole game again.

Basically it's not practical to run for SDA purposes.  A run could be done on emulator, but emulators do not give consistent times so that's why you don't see these 2nd cycles of CV1, 3 and 4 being speedrun.

If a gamesaver ever comes out for NES, it may become a possibility.
Master-88
And 2nd loop are quite silmilar as 1st loop. Stages 4,5 & 6 are identical same as 1st loop. There is more enemies and damage hurt 1, 2 & 3 levels.

Only real shortcut are medusa head jump level 2. Its save a lot time and its not possible in 1st loop because this room not includes any medusaheads. Maybe this category is fine but only GBA classic version IMO. Because there is level select IIRC.
Well, sorry to tell you MASTER-88, but level 4 is not the same at all.

The "creature of the black lagoon (XD)" spawns are completely different (as in quicker, stronger faster, XD), and bats have double spawn rate, at least.

In upper corridor (the one with the falling hunchbacks), bats are a new challenge and can mess up your run quite easily.

In level 5, at the death corridor, I believe medusa heads spawns are quicker. I can´t tell for sure but I'm quite positive. If not that then the rate doubles.

Level 6 is the one that could be exactly the same, but again I don´t know about hunchbacks spawn rates once you enter Draculas tower.

This I pinpoint just for clarification! Not trying to dismiss you or anything! And you are correct on the level 2 damage boost, it does save up a good time (10 secs?).

In fact, I´m very happy that there exists the chance of doing a speedrun, but now a new question arises, after reading Klaige´s comment...

Well, first, thanks Klaige for a very nice easy to understand comment!

There is the new release of CV 1 for the 3DS virtual console, where a chance exists of doing a savegame prior to the beginning of the 2nd quest...

Does it exist a valid way of recording speedruns on a 3DS system?

Or shall I begin looking for a copy of the GBA classic version as Master-88 suggests? In which case, will my run be considered if I follow the correct procedures?

Thanks both for your time!
Doing the run with the GBA version would be acceptable.  It'll probably be a different category than if it were done on say the NES (i honestly dont know the difference between the two versions timing, there may be none).  But if you can capture it by using the gameboy player on gamecube or a GBA capture device that's definitely an acceptable route.

Basically if you can capture the footage from an actual console and do the attempt legit then it's fair game!  Grin
Coool, it goes for around 17 dollars on ebay, and I yet have to put my hands on the gameboy player, but as soon as everything is set Ill begin with the run!
Thanks for your time and answer!

The 3DS version supports a single save state, so you could create one right before pressing a button to start quest 2. However when it comes to direct feed capturing 3DS games, it is extremely expensive compared to GBA/NES.
Yah, I am trying a 2nd quest only leather whip run (level 5=impossiburu!), and a 2nd quest NO WHIP NO DEATH run (currently doing lvl 3, seems fairly easy), so I have a savestate just when it says "Thank you for playing", see here, XD:

I figured bout the 3DS thing.  It will be fun doing the run on the GC thinggy, only have to wait until I can afford it.
Thanks!

Good luck on the run MuadDib. Love the username, love the game and category. The Gameboy player generally runs around $30 where you can find it, and amazon worked for me. Make sure that whatever you track down also comes with the corresponding GC disc that allows the system to play GBA games; that's an important piece of info I almost missed.
still having my mind on this, don't have the capital to begin it, but I am still thinking about it Cheesy
