Cash bounties for speedruns [locked]

SDA itself does not give out cash for speedruns; these bounties are all offered by individual members.

To be eligible for a bounty, a runner has to get in contact with (PM or otherwise) the person offering it, definitely before submitting the run to SDA and preferably before even starting work on the speedrun.

Here are the three I'd be willing to offer. In the first two cases I don't know if the video would actually be accepted onto SDA:

$50 for the best Zelda Twilight Princess Cave of Ordeals run. Discussion of that is already in the Newer Consoles forum.

$10 per level or SS run if anyone improves any of SDA's katamari videos, and/or $10 if anyone speedruns WLK's Fireflies stage. That stage has a timer and is not on SDA, and my best at it is literally 40 seconds slower than the best known time so it wouldn't make sense for me to speedrun it. edit: $20 for a good Kintaro Bear run in Make Ursa Major; my cow video is lonely Sad

edit: maximum $100.

To recieve a bounty for katamari from me your video(s) would have to actually make it onto SDA first.

I think in the first two cases I'd also Paypal $20 to anyone who creates a GOOD run but is beaten by someone else.

Here are the three I'd be willing to offer.  In the first two cases I don't know if the video would actually be accepted onto SDA:

$50 for the best Zelda Twilight Princess Cave of Ordeals run.  Discussion of that is already in the Newer Consoles forum.

$10 per level or SS run if anyone improves any of SDA's katamari videos, and/or $10 if anyone speedruns WLK's Fireflies stage.  That stage has a timer and is not on SDA, and my best at it is literally 40 seconds slower than the best known time so it wouldn't make sense for me to speedrun it.  edit: $20 for a good Kintaro Bear run in Make Ursa Major; my cow video is lonely :(  edit: maximum $100.

To recieve a bounty for katamari from me your video(s) would have to actually make it onto SDA first.

I think in the first two cases I'd also Paypal $20 to anyone who creates a GOOD run but is beaten by someone else.

When offering cash do honesty problems ever come up? Like do people ever claim other people's work to be their own?

Are there any SDA-ers willing to try to verify whether a specific video was actually run by the person that claimed it?

I guess it would be a good way to get more people to try just a bit harder and maybe raise the bar on SDA gameplay a few notches. It could also pose new problems, it's not fun to upload ~80GB of Fraps footage if the only way to prove you did the run is to provide the lossless footage, for example.

Unless it was my job I would never take or give money for doing a run.

I don't think any of us speedrunners would complain. A little money never hurts, and is definately better motivation to make awesome runs, which is what the site is about.

Could you compile a list of all the bounties that are confirmed at the top of the thread, labeled by the name of the person who is offering it?

Just to personally speak out, I think this is a good idea, It is just an added bonus for most. The people at SDA (me included), or at least most I've talked with, do speedrunning for personal pleasure. Sure it can be frustrating but the end result is always satisfying. Cash bounties might bring new runners looking for money but the majority will keep doing what they love, and maybe making a few bucks in the process.

You know what would be even more superb than giving money to runners? Giving money to those that do/did a lot more work, detracted from their social life and turned down sex to get you the most high quality updates ever.

But, on the matter of bounties for runners... Of course, the bounties can add to the motivation of the runners, and to the quality of runs. It would certainly be a very nice way of getting runs done for popular games. There's also another side of the coin. Unfortunately it can lead to frauds ("YOU WERE SUPPOSED TO SEND ME MONEY DAMNIT"), hiding of valuable tactics by runners because "someone can take them from me and claim bounty" and as such, paradoxically, detract from the overall value because of omitted tricks. There are also problems with verification, like Kibumbi said. While delivering tapes/DVDs/demos isn't a problem, because you will send them to SDA anyway, delivering FRAPS footage would be a lot of trouble, and not everyone has a DVD burner.
Hopefully the problems I've listed won't happen...we are a very developed, I would even say... *mature* community. A community that will try to share tricks even despite the bounty. That won't try to fraud. However, saying things like that aren't going to happen would be rather naive. Because from a barrage of new people that will start making runs, we are bound to find a few that will keep their tricks a secret from the community while using those published, claiming the bounties. In short, people that won't respect the community and the people that share those tactics even though they want to get the bounty as well.

Maybe I'm overreacting to all that, but you wanted a point of someone against those things. I'm also predicting something that may never happen. I'm really hoping it won't...
