From the comment by Lanayru I've decided to put up a formal thread for the Speedrun we have been planning for a little under a month to take place in Toronto, Canada.

With that being said, we are open to suggestions and idea's for the marathon as well as looking for people who can help with necessary equipment and helping out with the technical aspects of the marathon.

We will also need a place to do the marathon at.  I have heard that A & C Games are talking about it and would love to hear more about it so that we can get that out of the way first and focus on getting organizers together and plan for the meet-up.  At that point and time we will probably discuss the best date and how things will be run.

Thank you to everyone who has been interested in getting this going and here is to get this party started~!

Edit 1: So we have a room in a Mumble server.  I do ask that you do not bother the other people in there.  You can certainly talk to them but just don't go too far.  If you get banned then I will not be able to help you.

Anyways the Server name for mumble is lordkat.com, default ports, nickname and label w.e you want.  The room for us is at the bottom labelled "Stream - Tinglenator"

Edit 2: Alrighty we have a tentative date for CSAssembly in the 2nd week of April.  Obviously it is possible to change depending on who comes but it is there.  We already do have some people here for Tech so we are more looking for those who can run games.  Also YOU DO NOT NEED TO BE FROM CANADA if you want to join in the speedrunning glory.  This is just taking place in Canada
Thread title:
Techno is life
Hmm well I'm not from around T/O so I don't know of venues that it could be held at, is there an idea on what the dates will be? I'd be smart to have it when people don't have school or during something like exams, as for tech I have no idea what equipment you guys have but I do have some background knowledge on operating  a soundboard and will be going to NC for broadcasting next year. I know a a few people that could possibly come from my city that also know a thing or 2 on tech. Also any ideas on what the setup will be like? For example PC's and consoles?
Many words! Handle it!
Trying to schedule around exams is tricky in the winter because of peoples' holiday season plans. Near as I can tell, Fall term ends around Dec 19th and Winter term begins on Jan 5th. Something around the 28th (sunday) to 3rd (saturday) area could make sense, but it's really awkward being just after Christmas and through New Years. Plus there's the small issue of AGDQ starting on the 4th. It might be better to aim for exam time in early December, but it depends a lot on the needs of who is going to be there. There's also the matter of how much time we can actually fill, and thus how long the marathon should be.

As far as setup, I think it depends a lot on if A & C is good with using their space, and if they would let us use their tech at all. I'm not really sure where else in Toronto it could be held off hand. It's a pretty expensive city, so options aren't likely to be that plentiful.
I'm not good at organising meet up type marathons but when game submissions are allowed i can help out there Smiley I have a couple of concerns one being not conflicting with AGDQ. 2 is to make sure you know how long it will go for before contacting anywhere just some things to think about though good luck with this it'll be really exciting Cheesy
Alright, so my apologies for being quiet on the topic the last week or so, but I just participated in A&C's small little speedrunning event. It was pretty well set-up and ran very smoothly. The stream and layout was all quite good. The room is very, very small, though. It has fairly poor acoustics, but its not impossible to get a slightly larger marathon going on there. The organizer was NeoRussel https://twitter.com/NeoRussell and I think contacting him directly would be the best option for A&C specifically.
it honestly does feel like we should prolly do it a month after AGDQ.  Doing it too soon before or after would just cause issues and the last thing I want to do is make people commit to just ONE marathon.  So maybe like the last week of February would be best.

That layout was not good

Why not in March then? Aren't people done by then? or during a march break or a reading week
March might work as well.  We would still need to discuss with the place that we are doing it at first and find out the best date but it certain is a good timing.  As for the Stream Layout, I think we should ask people who have done it in the past their opinion or their aid in getting one done, but that will wait until we have more things figured out.
Would really be interested in that, especially if it is in March or around that time. I am not from around there (Quebec here) when there will be more info about the marathon available it would be nice to know the hotel/place to sleep around the venue.
aka theenglishman
I live in Toronto.  I'm totally for this!!!
Just saw that there is this marathon to in march https://forum.speeddemosarchive.com/post/cgdr_canadian_games_done_respectfully_allcanadian_speedrunning_marathon.html For Canadian too (they are aiming for spring break week)
That was the old topic that seemed to have dropped off in interest as well as Bismuth wanted to change it to online afterwards.  Plus it was to take place in Ottawa where I don`t feel it`s as accessible compared to Toronto as a lot more people can reach because of the Pearson airport.

With that being said, interest seems to be dying here as well a bit.  We are still looking for people to speedrun.  I would love to get a few bigger names in the community like Bonesaw and Obdajr, as well as I would definetly love to see Dime and LCC show up too.  So I ask anyone who wants to help, Link this onto twitter get the word out to our fellow canadians and let`s really start getting this stuff going.
Needs clear organization/times before people can volunteer to run. Until that's decided, don't really expect anyone to take this completely seriously.. look at how the other one ended up. I'd love to do a run, but until it's further along it's tough to decide anything.
I wish Kumatora was my waifu </3
Man, I wish I lived in the real part of Canada and not the east coast, as I'd love to contribute in some fashion.

I'm not sure what type of equipment would be necessary, but I've got a bunch (consoles and general wires, etc). I'd also be able to make the layout, if needed. I've done the GameCube UI for NintendoSpy (which I still have to upload to the github page >_<). https://cloudup.com/ikw9AwPchWZ I'd also love to participate in a run. All I can recommend is doing it Reading Week, typically end of February. As for venue options, while perhaps odd, I'll see what Sheridan College can do. I'm going there for Game Design, so perhaps a livestream event as such would be accepted. I know they rent out some parts of the College for things like Motorcycle Classes and Workshops, though I'm not sure how many people would want to take the GO to Oakville (well, there's also the Mississauga HMC Campus at Square One.) In any case, I'll see what I can find. (Also, Pearson is in Mississauga, so look at what it has to offer, too.)
I'm down to do tech with Lanayru. I doubt I'd actually run any games but setting up the tech, doing the stream layout etc. I am down for. Depending on numbers I can start rough drafting everything needed. Be warned I doubt we'll be super fancy with our tech, but frugal without issues seems like a good start.

This looks like a really good idea, I'd be able to help out with tech table and I could do some layout work if its needed. I can also offer a game. (maybe two if I can pick up another one by then)
twitch.tv/deadrobots
I would be super interested in taking part of this if it were too happen. I live over in Manitoba so depending on dates it might not be too hard to get over.
But yea, I can't say for sure unless you guys can get a set time planned.

Tinglenator: Are you planning on doing a Skype conference? I'd like in if you do one. It's great for getting ideas going and sorting some stuff out.
Toronto is an awful place for the convention.  Hotel conference rooms are around $30k for a weekend.  This is coming from a close family member who works for an NGO and has to regularly book conference rooms and whatnot.

I'd really like to be involved in this as it's something I've wanted to make happen for quite some time.

I honestly had no intention of booking a Hotel conference room in Toronto.  I don't expect this to be big enough to book something that would cost us all money that we dont need to spend.  My initial plan was do to the marathon at A & C Games, but they just have not gotten back to me yet about it so it may take place somewhere in the Greater Toronto Area.

With that being said, I am still holding out on the possibility that we can do it somewhere in Toronto itself, if it has to be Brampton or Mississauga, so be it we will figure it out during that time.

Edit: As for using skype, I have way too many issues with it in the past so if we do use something it will be Mumble.  My friend owns a server and I will be asking him if he can make a room for us about it.
Techno is life
yeah doing it near Pearson INTL or in downtown Toronto will be way too expensive and plus the traffic in downtown Toronto is just crazy, perhaps Missisauga or Oakville has some places that would work out, or maybe Brampton? I haven't been much around Brampton lately Tongue
This might sound a bit rinky dink, but my parents have a nice, big, empty basement in Oakville. They have ~10mbps upload, which is sufficient for a decent quality stream. I've done 100h continuous streams from there before without issue. We could theoretically set something up there. The caveats to this are we only really have room to sleep like 6 or so, and have basically no preexisting setup.
Hey, I live in the Toronto area! The only problem is convincing my parents to let me go to some random guy's basement. Smiley
I think an actual venue would be best. No need for complete strangers to enter somebody's home and if shit happens in it's a public venue, not your home. It doesn't have to be anything fancy, just a place that has a decent internet connection and a big enough room to handle tech and the people going there.
