Jordan asked me to post for him, as he's in school and this thread contains alot of swear words so he can't access it.

Before I post what he asked me to, he also wanted to ask you all to please edit your posts from any words that might, even if slighty, be considered swear words (I saw some *** words on the first page if I'm not mistaken)

Here's his post:

No, I do not have to take dammage in order to know when I'm close enough to
hit queen gohma. It's all about remembering how long to hold the aro key or
joystick before attacking. as for phantom ganon, when he's almost all the
way out of the picture, you can actually targat him;to find him, I must use
directional sound. the sound of his horse must be directly in the senter of
the speekers---if it's off to the left or right, I can't make a good shot. I
can hit him most times but some times do miss(but I can easilly beat him).
and I cannot "Play through OoT", normally that means to beat the game.

Why the(----) would you say that? I'd use the full  word, but I can't because the security system at school doesn't like this thread because of bad words. anyways, obviously if you make a post as negative and insulting as that one, you haven't read through this thread. the reason I've never beaten OoT is because I don't see. however, I wish that one day I'll be able to beat this game, even with help if  needed. Anyways, if you haven't read and understood this thread, please don't post to it. and Thank you kindly, those of you who have publicly called this guy an idiot! he deserves it!

He's an idiot. If he beat it 24234 times then... O_o He would have to play for about 8 hours every say, not fooling around at all. Like, no-practice speedrunning it.

Oh and cody is Guay.

just out of cureosity, anyone have any idea why OoT does not allow you to fight bosses again after you have killed them and saved? am I wrong about this? any way to do it? what do you do if you want to fight a boss over again, or how do you get to the  fight again?

You start a new game and work your way up to the boss.

The only boss you can fight again is Ganondorf/Ganon. What you can do is save before you face the boss then copy that file so you can fight it whenever you want.
It's the french canadian. Hug Him!!!
Wow. I mean, it's quite impressive the way you play without seeing a thing. You're are the terry fox of the blinded people.

One thing, the jaws you were talking about, how does it read quick words like when you take out some letters to write faster?

It's all about remembering the way Jaws says those words. there are commands you can use to make jaws say them letter by letter, so you learn when you hear an oddly said word what the spelling of it is. it will sound out the word if it has vowls in it. if the shortform word does not have vowls in it, jaws cannot say it and will therefore just spell it out. there is also a "Dictionary manager" built into jaws. you enter a word or groop of letters into an edit field, then in another edit field you enter a different word(e.g, LOL=Laughing out loud). so whenever jaws sees "LOL" it will say "Laughing out loud". you can set it so it only does that in one application, or for any application the word comes up in. you can also make jaws spell out a contraction word if you put it all in caps. for example, if you right TTYL, it says "T T Y L" as seperat letters. but if written ttyl, it tries to sound it out. just while I'm on the topic, there was an odd bug in earlier versions of jaws that would make it crash on a spacific combonation of 7 letters(I won't put the word here, because I don't want people crashing my jaws). they have fixed that bug, but it can still work if you tamper with the word a bit(add ing to it).
and I do know about Tary Fox. he is very inspiring in deed. I know 1 person who died of canser and one person who beat it. our school does an anual Tary fox run and fund razing campain each year.

everybody wanna tell you the meaning of music
This thread absolutely fascinates me. I'm trying to imagine which types of games would work relatively ok if you were blind. If someone really had the dedication, I think completing a shmup (since they are deterministic by input) while blind would be amazing. Or perhaps something like Rez would be the most fitting, since sound and music are already so emphasized. Something like Tetris too, or any other puzzle game, it might be possible to have a mental model of the game state and thus not actually have to see the board. This would rely on knowing which pieces you are given though.

My vote is for Rez, since that would be pretty sweet.

When I was an undergrad, I saw a game that someone made that was actually designed for blind people. It was some sort of a maze nagivation game with surround sound audio cues, and blind people were actually better at it, than people with hearing.

Edit: yes Sad Wait, this is going to screw Jordan up by being in the wrong order. Sad

OoT Rocks!

Yes, you probably mean vision.
and the game you are talking about is probably "Shades of Doom". it is an audio game based on Doom. you have to navigate mazes, locate and go through doors, find keys  and kill monsters with various weppons that you collect on your way. it is a hard game in deed, but I've beaten it way too many times and therefore haven't played it much in the last fiew months(even though I've beaten it a bunch of times, I still can't figure out what the stupid coffee machine in level 6 is for). there are quite a fiew Audio games in existance, many of which are quite good. some of my favorite audio games can be found at http://www.l-works.net
and http://www.draconisentertainment.com
there is one audio game on the l-works site that I've gotten so good at that I actually speed run it for fun, and I'm currently number 2 on the scoreboard for the highest 10 scores(though this has nothing to do with speed runing it). I used to be number 1 but someone beat my score by about 2000 points, which actually isn't all that much, and I will probably beat their score with a little bit more practice. and one other thing---can you guys Please go through this thread, and edit any posts that contain swair words(including the A word and the H word). not that I take offence to them or anything, but at school I can't reply to this thread because the security system blocks parts of it do to swair words. Thanks.

I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
Woah, that's just amazing

Here comes a tip: if you want to beat Ganon (the second form of Ganondorf), you can do it the long way: Z-target him and keep moving to either left or right (you will be walking in circles and Ganon will be at the center of the circle). Use your longshot and hit his head to stun him. While he is stunned, you can hit his tail then.

You can keep doing that until you have to do the last blow using the Master Sword

In other words, all you have to do is keep moving in circles with Z-Targetting and use your longshot on both his head (to stun) and tail (to do damage). This however takes time.

I hope someone can help you out with the .m64 files  Smiley

I edited out a couple swears; you should be able to reply from school now, though I'm not sure if I got them all.

Have you played Majora's Mask? While generally harder and more complex than OoT, I think at least a couple of the bosses could be defeated, though I don't have a good enough memory of the sound cues to be sure. Odolwa in particular could be interesting, if I remember it right... I do know I found the sound in that battle quite delightful. And unlike OoT, you can fight bosses again easily.

I, too, find this whole subject rather fascinating. Super Liam is the game you speedrun, right? I downloaded and played through the demo... quite interesting. Monkeys were tricky to dodge at first, but the boss of the first world was too easy. Then I died a few times in the first sewer pit... it didn't seem to like me holding down jump and forward for some reason; had to hold jump and keep tapping forward to make it over. But I beat the demo. ^_^

...I wonder what that smiley looks like to you.

Are there any games out there that use a sort of "echolocation" to show you the terrain? Super Liam was mostly just flat, and used audio cues to mark the few pits, all of which were identical... not hard to "see" what the terrain was like. But it seems there ought to be a way to represent more complex terrain in audio, even if you actively have to "look" and can only see small pieces at a time.
Long live SF64!
Many blind people have an uncanny ability to discern their surroundings from background sounds and echos.  We tune out lots of valuable audio information like a creeking board, light wind against a window, the hum of water running through pipes in the walls, and of course the way a simple sound like snapping your fingers echos back to us from the room.  I'm just guessing at these examples because I can't actually remember some of the things like that that have surprised me before, but you get the idea.

Perhaps a program could be created, like StrangenessDSS suggested, which would provide an audio interpretation of 3-dimensional surroundings, and then that could be heard by the gamer in surround sound or at least stereo sound.  Obviously, this would add plenty of unnecessary ambiant sound, but if it could be done where a blind person could actually discern the geometry of their surroundings, that would just be awesome!
OoT Rocks!

Wow! I really think it is quite an honor to receive a reply from one of the “Bosses” of SDA, or “Expert Donkey Diddlers” according to the SDA forum rankings, especially on a topic that is admittedly not going anywhere (meaning it won’t produce a speed run). Thank you for editing my thread, though there is still something there that the security system doesn’t like. I can now read page 1(which used to be blocked by the school security system), but there is still something that stops me from replying to this particular topic.

Have you played Majora's Mask?

Yes, I played Majora’s mask a long time ago (like 6 months ago)

While generally harder and more complex than OoT, I think at least a couple of the bosses could be defeated, though I don't
have a good enough memory of the sound cues to be sure.

I can defeat 3 of the 5 bosses in that game, but 2 of them I require extra hearts and maybe a bottled fairy for.

Odolwa in particular could be interesting, if I remember it right... I do know I found the sound
in that battle quite delightful.

The very creative and interesting sounds that boss makes is the reason for him being so easy for me---helps me locate him. I generally just lock on and fire an arrow at him, then locate him and get 2 or 3 attacks in with my sword. It gets more difficult when he summons the creatures to attack, though I can still fight him easily. I can also defeat the snowhead boss and Gyorg, as well as the final boss (majora’s mask /majora’s incarnation /majora’s wrath). I need more health especially for the 3rd form, but I can beat it.

And unlike OoT, you can fight bosses again easily.

Which is definitely one thing I’ve always liked about MM over OoT, though I preferred MM’s minibosses over its bosses. Is it possible to fight those over again? Particularly the Wart in great bay temple. I also beat the Dinalfos in woodfall temple and the Gecko thing in great bay temple, not the one in woodfall. I’ve beaten the wizrobes in snowhead, though they are very hard for me and I waste a lot of arrows on them. I also beat Garo and Gomez in stone tower temple.
An unfortunate thing happened though. Several months after a good friend of mine beat majora’s mask for me and saved the fights, My computer that had the files on it went down, so did his and so did my e-mail inbox where I also had the files---so that was the end of that. I haven’t been able to play MM since, though I think if I had another chance I’d still do just as well as I once did.

I, too, find this whole subject rather fascinating.

Thank you.

Super Liam is the game you speedrun, right?
That is correct.

I downloaded and played through the demo... quite interesting.

Hay…I like this! I’ve actually inspired a sighted person to try audio games!

Monkeys were tricky to dodge at first, but the boss of the first world was too easy.

And that’s the same for every boss in that game. And the monkeys just require practice and good timing to dodge. I don’t have trouble with them anymore, but they used to be a real pain.

Then I died a few times in the first sewer pit... it didn't seem to
like me holding down jump and forward for some reason; had to hold jump and keep tapping forward to make it over.
Holding forward doesn’t work; just tap jump once and then tap forward 7 or 8 times, but no more than that. This gets you over the sewer still in good time to kill an enemy that might be waiting for you on the other side without it hitting you.

But I beat the demo.
Congrats on beating the demo. If you get an opportunity to try the rest of the game, you should take it. There are a lot of new challenges beyond the Suburban streets level.

^_^

...I wonder what that smiley looks like to you.

Jaws pronounced it like this: “Carrot underline Carrot”

Are there any games out there that use a sort of "echolocation" to show you the terrain?

Not sure I fully understand that, but I’ll give it a shot. Not exactly sure as to the meaning of terrain, but I think I can figure it out in context.
Some audio games(such as Monkey Business, and Shades of Doom) have a sort of navigator device that helps you figure out the layout of the location you are in. in shades of doom, announcements are made throughout the game which help you know when to turn etc. they often say something like “The passage turn sharply to the left”, “the passage turn sharply to the right”, “the passes turn sharply to the left and right”(meaning you can turn in either direction), “the passage continues”, “the passage terminates abruptly”, “the room terminates abruptly”, “the room continues” and some others that help you find your way around. There are also commands that make it announce the name of an object near by (Door, Toilet etc). It also has beeping sounds that indicate that a collectable item or a door is near. You have to put these sounds directly in the center of your field of hearing, then move in there direction. There is also a distinctive beep that helps you to aim at enemies.
In Monkey business, there are also commands that let you “Look” in various directions and hear the name of objects near by (Trees, walls and other things).

Super Liam was mostly just flat, and used audio cues to mark the
Few pits, all of which were identical... not hard to "see" what the terrain was like.

SL is a Side scrolling game. The first level is completely flat, and the first act of the second has only the odd pit here and there. It gets more rough and bumpy after that. Though there are a few levels that are flat and have no holes of any kind to avoid, there are always other obstacles to jump over or dodge using timing skills.

But it seems there ought to be a way to represent more complex terrain
In audio, even if you actively have to "look" and can only see small pieces at a time.
As mentioned earlier, 3d games such as Monkey business and Shades of Doom are a lot more complex than SL, though I am not sure if I am answering your question correctly because I’m not sure of the exact meaning of Terrain, but I think I’ve understood most of it. I hope I’ve answered your questions---and I’m sorry for taking so long. I could have sent you a PM from school, but I wanted to answer your questions publicly so I decided to wait until I was home. I’m currently working on a speed run of Super Liam (Segmented). I’m almost done, but segment 19 is giving me a hard time. I know segment 20 will be worse but once that’s done I just have to do segment 21, which will consist of only a boss battle, and then I’m all done. I’ve been recording my segments in mp3, and I hope I can break 32 minutes or so---my ultimate goal is to break 30, but I’m not so sure that’s possible anymore.

Hello everyone. I've got the OoT files done(some people were able to help me out with those) but I truely can't find anyone who can or will do majora's mask the same way. if someone could please help me with that, please contact me(you can contact me on msn messanger at jv_erner@hotmail.com, Skype at morpha32 or e-mail at jv_erner@hotmail.com). Skype is my prefered method though you can use any of the 3 specified, or you can use this topic.

Also, is there such thing as a majora's mask tas?
Thanks.

Hello all, I have a questionn for you. I am trying to record .m64 files for majora's mask. the game works fine when it's not being recorded but when you start recording either from start or from snapshot, the games controls lock up and you can't do anything. the game continues to run normally(the intro keeps progressing etc) but pressing buttons does nothing. how do you fix this?
